A beautiful monarch butterfly with its wings spread out over a zinnia flower. The monarch butterfly is known for its two pairs of brilliant orange-red wings, featuring black veins and white spots along the edges.
I've been taking a lot of pictures of butterflies on my recent bird walks. I was happy to see this dark morph Eastern Tiger Swallowtail show me its beautiful color.
Collecting some #mushrooms for #dinner the first one I see is a hand-sized #boletus.. It looks a bit wet so I'll leave it for now. It'll be a backup ;-)
A Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum cruentatum) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 1 May 2023. The second shot shows the red streak running down its back.
Here is the second picture of my great horned owlet.
After we got to a safe distance to observe the owl it fell asleep! That made me feel good since I know we were not in any danger from the mom and we were not disturbing it.
I was walking down on of the nature trails when my friend told me to look up and about 5-6 ft above me was this great horned owlet! Knowing that the mom could be nearby I slowly headed back up the trail.
We found a spot at a safe distance to photograph and observe the owlet.
I inherited an old Miranda from 1973 from my father. Have envied him from childhood for this. Now I cherish it for him. A wonderful camera with a quite fantastic lens.

A post I made on FB about my favorite animals led to a whole lot of people realizing that pink fairy armadillos are an actual thing, and it is delightful to watch 😆
I guess I'm now spreading the gospel of the pink fairy armadillo. They are real, y'all.
@von I am a Californian, I've visited Washington for some mountain biking, And I really enjoyed my time in the Cascades; Angels Staircase was amazing in the fall, with the golden larches blazing.
I read a book once that I really enjoyed, Of Men and Mountains. It was written by William O. Douglas, a Supreme Court justice, about his outdoor life as a young man in Washington state. It really did a great job of describing the place and time, the outdoors, the environment, the nature. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
This diary of autistic teen Dara McAnulty chronicles a year in his life in Northern Ireland, focussing on nature outings with his family and his naturalistic observations close to home.
Initially I felt like not enough was happening, the writing was too descriptive and at the same time too distant and repetitive. But somewhere along the way Dara's writing became a sort of comfort blanket, perfect for reading right before bed. I really enjoyed reading about Dara's passion for nature and I found myself becoming more observant on my own hikes because of it. What I maybe loved even more was the way Dara writes about his family; it is clear how much they all love each other.
A group of Mangrove Jewel Bugs (Calliphara nobilis) spotted on a leaf at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 3 Sept 2023. When I attempted to take shots of another gathering, half of them flew away, so I left that group alone.
Joy takes Root is a mesmerizing picture book sharing the love of family, gardening and the respect of Nature, Earth and Ancestors. In her grandmother's garden, a young Black girl learns about mindfulness and herbal medicine in this soothing intergenerational story about our connection to nature.
