I'm continuing my "following folktales around the world" blog series with a spinoff: reading folktale collections from Hungarian Roma traditional storytellers.

First up: Jóni Ferenc, with talent for putting unexpected twists on well known tale types, and using elaborate cursing to color his tales for adults. His empathy shines through as well. I found many favorites in this book.

Musing

I love conversations on social media, and community experiences such as NaNo, but I often feel like I can't participate because my genre is so different... Writing folklore collections is not the same process, and not the same problems. I would love to have more writers around me who work with folktales, myths, traditional material. Like @juergen_hubert 😊

This doesn't mean I don't love reading "behind the scenes" wip stuff from other genre writers though 😊

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any #apiarist or #entomology expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...

I read the first volume for Following Folktales Around the World, and it was one of the highlights of the entire challenge. I am super excited for the new stories 🥰🥰🥰

Slowly working my way through Ghosts, Monsters and Demons of India by @blaft It's an amazing read. Today's favorite is the demon that kills people by spinning around and smacking them with one very long boob.

As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...

This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more #MG or #PB categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.

Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:

Hungarian of the day:

Jesus Christ, while walking the earth, encounters some mean and greedy people. And he punishes them by turning all ears of corn in their fields into horse d***s.

For today's pumpkin theme:

Not a myth, but one of my favorite folktales is the Persian tale of Pumpkin Girl (or Melon Girl). It's about a woman who adopts a crying pumpkin and raises it as her child. At school during lunchtime, a girl sneaks out of the pumpkin to eat in secret. A neighbor's son sees her and falls in love with her. The rest is a Cinderella story, and eventually the pumpkin turns into a girl for good.

Alright so let's try this.

What folktales or fairy tales would you nominate for a Folktale of the Year bracket?

What's your favorite tale?
Which one do you think would make a good Folktale of the Year for 2024?
Which one would be fun to campaign for in a vote?
Which one would you enjoy reading other people's opinions about?

Give us a title, a summary, or a type (see toot below for explanation of tale types) 😄

Boosts welcome

I am still mulling over the idea of doing a folktale bracket for October... Have people nominate their favorite tale types and find some fun stories for each type, maybe. What say you all?

The award for most badass grandparents in Greek goes to Odysseus on his mother's side for

Mestra - Daughter of King Erysichthon. She demanded shapeshifting powers from Poseidon, and used them to flee when her abusive father sold her.

Autolykos - Son of Hermes, legendary thief and trickster. No one could ever catch him.

Imagine that love story 😄

It's and I want to share the list of awesome books I read for this year's Polymath Training Challenge.

Run on a Hungarian book site, this challenge announces 12 nonfiction topics every year - 11 are the same, the 12th is randomly selected for each participant. You get to pick the books you want to read.

I found some awesome books for this year and finished early, so I'm sharing now 😊 📚

Szabó Magda's The Moment, which is a retelling of the Aeneid where Aeneas dies in Troy, and his wife puts on his armor and does the whole thing. Sadly I don't think it has an English translation... 😔

In Hungary, Carl Kerényi's Greek mythology books are the best ones - very detailed and interesting (though a bit dry). Some were published in English and German too.

Also, Gerald Morris' The Squire's Tales series is probably my favorite retelling of Arthurian legends. It is technically juvenile fiction but I read them as an adult and adored them. So much empathy and kindness, and understanding of the originals.
