When Victorian taxidermists received a strange creature with heavy folds of grooved skin, they thought all those wrinkles needed to be smoothed out. And so the Horniman Museum’s walrus, as with so many taxidermy works made by those who hadn’t yet glimpsed the dead animal in its living state, became its own sort of walrus — heavily overstuffed until he seems about to burst, and not a wrinkle over his taut skin. - https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/horniman-museum-walrus-comes-home

Just read that animals use icons and signs to communicate but not symbols. I guess the first question would be whether ‘use’ also implies ‘understanding’, but, aren’t the words we use for commands symbols? I am not saying animals use ‘language’ but I wouldn’t say they don’t use any symbols…heeelp!! @linguistics @anthropology

A veterinarian tends to a newly born Sumatran rhino calf at a sanctuary at Way Kambas National Park, Indonesia. The baby is a very welcome arrival, since the species is critically endangered; there are less than 80 left in the world. It is our smallest rhinocerous and the most vocal, making noises such as whistles, whale-like calls and what scientists call ‘the eep’.

Vet Surgery
Pet surgery is performed in our operating room under full general anaesthesia, with premedications for pain and anxiety. Our patients are usually intubated, and placed on monitoring equipment. The affected area will be clipped free of hair and prepared for surgery, with skin cleansers to reduce the chance of contamination and infection.
Surgery is then performed. On completion, the patient is allowed to gently, wake up. Recovery is monitored and animals are soothed and cared for by our nurses, then, when ready, they are sent home, with pain relief medications. After any surgery, it is best that the patient does not lick or chew at their wounds, some require an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking. Licking can cause postoperative infection and prolong healing time.
