just heard of notesnook. are you using the self-hosted version or their free plan? is it self-hostable?

On,

According to the article, the content stays, just cannot add more notes or notebooks. I followed the link to Evernote FAQ, and it says:

In keeping with Evernote’s 3 Laws of Data Protection, and to ensure that all users retain full ownership of their data, any Free user who currently has more than fifty notes and one notebook will still be able to view, edit, export, share, and delete existing notes and notebooks.

A threat actor abuses Google Ads to distribute malicious CPU-Z app from fake Windows news site, Malwarebytes reports (www.malwarebytes.com)

The malicious ad is for CPU-Z, a popular utility for Windows users that want to troubleshoot their processor and other computer hardware details. The advertiser shows as Scott Cooper and is likely a compromised or fake identity, the report says.

With the anti-trust trial going on, I think this may be an attempt to get some hype to drown out some of the bad allegations. Like last week they were called out for changing search queries. I hope they follow through but i'm not sure.

Best way to use an Android is to stay as far away as you can from Google products or at least minimize it.

Google is not making Android for users, but itself as its advertising platform. Ever wonder why custom ROMs and even other manufacturers have a permission to block internet access for specific apps in their Android forks but Google does not? hmm… Alright

Google isn't looking out for anyone but itself. These kind of restrictions and excuses are exactly what Apple calls "security".

Google hid evidence by training workers to avoid words monopolists use, DOJ says (arstechnica.com)

The Department of Justice kicked off its antitrust trial against Google this week by presenting evidence that Google allegedly hid monopolistic behaviors not just by auto-deleting four years of chats, but also by training employees to avoid using certain words in office communications.

Before that, it was hangouts and regular people didn’t know about it.

This is their biggest problem, They themselves fragment their user base. We were on hangouts, you could even get your google voice calls on it, we didnt' switch to allo or duo, till they announced they were retiring hangouts. And now all three are gone.

We stay away from Google now.

Just off the top of my head, Android allows multiple browser engines to work on it, allowing firefox to use extensions. Android can torrent, while you can't on stock iOS without hacks. Firefox with extensions on Android is god send if you're a power user.

For someone who claims to be a power user, it's really showing… And don't forget open source ecosystem is much much much bigger on Android.

My favorite laptop is a the 10 year old Asus Zenbook ux305f. It was slow when it came out but, runs flawlessly. It's fanless, great on battery, the battery and ssd are user replaceable, and has a 1080p matte display. Old tech can be great tech.

I hope this is the right place to put this..I want to use pi-hole

I want to use pi-hole and it comes highly recommended to use raspberry pi to cover the house and have an always on capability. I started looking at just starter packages at Amazon and they don’t come with a monitor, which it looks like you need. How do I do this? I want a raspberry pi to run pi-hole to protect my house....

On,
@On@kbin.social avatar

You get a raspberry pi. Then you get a durable SD card. You make the card bootable with the appropriate tool on your PC. While you're on the PC, you can make additional configuration changes in text files to configure wifi network credentials, static IP address and others. WIFI credentials being most important if you don't plan to connect it by ethernet or don't have extra monitors, keyboards, and mouse.

Then you place the SD card to the Pi and boot it up. It automatically connects to the WIFI using the credentials you set in the SD card. If you used an static IP address, use it to ssh into it. Then copy the pihole installation code from the pihole website. And you're done.

If you want to give pihole a try before you get a Raspberry pi, you can install it within other Linux OS, like Linux mint. You can move all the configurations by exporting them later.

Google owns it, as in Google gets the last say in what goes into mainline AOSP code. The code is open source but they decide what next Android release is going to be. You can submit a PR, they decide if it gets merged or not.

If anyone wants to make independent modifications over it, they can fork it, because the license permits it. Now the fork is not owned by Google. But Google owns the main android repository.

it seems ridiculous to prosecute the particular crime of posession

what does this even mean? you mean with people hoarding CSAM shouldn't be charged because they're not distributing it?

Do people think there would be some dramatic explosion of CSAM?

Yes, this is not your local backwater town where you know there are a few visibly shitty & disgusting people and people tell their kids to stay away and everyone becomes safe. And if you think shit doesn't explode on the internet, you might be living under a rock last 2 decades.

That's stupid on a whole new level and your made up scenario doesn't make it any better. No one is threatened for having been sent some questionable content. The person who sent those however might be and the tech today makes it incredibly easy to prove where anything came from since everyone is being tracked.

Seize all funds received for distributing it, throw anyone involved in producing it in prison and throw away the key,

How about we prevent such things from happening by discouraging it in the firat place? Sure, they won't be down to 0, but your solution starting after the distribution has already started is highly disturbing.

Jitsi, the open-source video conferencing platform, now requires a Google, Microsoft, or Facebook account for their online service. - Beehaw (beehaw.org)

While Jitsi is open-source, most people use the platform they provide, meet.jit.si [http://meet.jit.si], for immediate conference calls. They have now introduced a “Know Your Customer” policy and require at least one of the attendees to log in with a Facebook, Github (Microsoft), or Google account. If you prefer not to...

Yea, the company does not want to be an accessory for crime or illegal activity. That's to be expected if they want to keep their business running. But that won't stop people from raging and claiming the project is now going to die.

Not a smart watch, but a Mi Band fitness tracker.

Pros:

  • works well enough
  • Private
  • data visualizations are great
  • Advanced sleep tracking
  • Lots of customization features

Cons:

  • needs 3rd party app to sync weather
  • Doesn't exit cleanly
  • Calendar sync has never worked for me (even though I gave it necessary permissions )

There's no moving at all. it's just a bridge to use multiple messaging services in a single app. Everyone else you talk to stays on which ever app they want.

You have to trust the service with your data though. Some services won't be E2EE anymore. But their bridges are opensource so, you can self host them if you want
