🧵 1/ Perhaps you know this feeling: unpleasant current events come thick and fast, & & can almost paralyse us. What's really good then: immersing yourself in , shifting perspectives. What was it like on this between the ice ages and the greenhouses? Why was the never empty even when it looked desolate? And how does work?

A rant about leaf blowers. Just stop with them. Gas ones spew CO2 and particulates at an alarming rate, they’re the definition of noise pollution, and they disturb insect habitat under your hedges. But they’re also just not that good at getting leaves together. Here’s the thing that no blower guy will tell you, but every SE Asian grandma knows: the best way to get leaves off your hard surfaces is this tool right here. 1/4

Black Mountain (ACT) orchids - Dusky Fingers, Waxlips and Brown Caps out in one spot, but not much out at all in others (although I only had a quick look!) Canberra has had pretty much exactly the average rainfall for this calendar year so far - but local bush land and forests still felt a little drier than most really good orchid seasons. Might have to wait until the montane species start to flower later in spring / early summer now to put a lot of time into looking for Canberra orchids.

"Greta Thunberg Could Face Jail Term After Second Blockade of Swedish Oil Port"

"The Swedish climate activist has been charged for a second time for failing to obey police orders."

(See the linked article at the bottom.)

Something I posted somewhere else:

Greta’s perceptive way of seeing the world in very literal, stark terms allows her to clearly see the climate crisis as an emergency, while so many others view climate change as an abstraction. To her it’s not an abstract threat, it’s an evident reality. That’s why she said this:

"Adults keep saying: “We owe it to the young people to give them hope.” But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act."

"I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is."

And she’s right. She began her activism all alone, sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament building holding a sign, while refusing to go to school. She thought school was impossible to attend while the planet was burning. She needed to voice this massive threat to young people. She began the school strike that grew to include other young people.

Yes, she is a hero.

Let this sink in for a minute...

Of all the mammals on Earth, 96% are livestock and humans.

Only 4% are wild mammals.

Of all birds in the world, 70% are chickens and other poultry, just 30% are wild.

The biggest problem we face right now is not climate change or AI or intrusive government or biodiversity loss.

Our biggest problem right now is polarization - our inability to have meaningful conversations across political/tribal divides.

We think the Aspen Proposal is distant enough and general enough to provide a useful starting point for those conversations.

Please feel free to use it for that purpose.

The kingfishers might not see eye to eye.

But there’s one thing we all can agree on – our Natura 2000 network is a haven for valuable and threatened species and habitats:

🌳 The mythical Foloi oak forest 🇬🇷

🦋 The Jersey Tiger butterfly and the Kingfisher Alcedo Attis.

🏞️ The Rila National Park 🇧🇬 with its mountains and glacial lakes.

Now is the moment for us to recognise those who work hard to preserve our natural heritage.
