Not sure if folks are aware but India has stopped exporting rice to other countries and other asian countries are following suit. Basmati and Sona Masoori rice is really hard to find now.

For asians, not having rice is something unfathomable. Our cultures depend on it. There is no bigger wake up call than seeing rice being restricted thanks to climate change.

This past year I have started transitioning away from foods that can only be grown really far away from where I live.

It started with giving up bananas, when I lived in Belize bananas were one of my staples but the longer I am away from eating them the more I have learned about how the reason they are one of the cheapest fruits are because of extreme colonialist actions by (mainly) the USA

Just two months ago I decided that I needed to change from eating rice to more local grains and I have switched to Rye and Oats (I had used them as flours but not as whole grains)

I now hear that the rice is going to be more difficult to get. I knew about climate change but this is showing me that I was wrong in thinking that I was going to die before the major effects hit me.

It is my wish that fewer people suffer, I can only hope that by not exporting India will be better able to feed its people

Love this story about a Toronto man who created an app that makes it easier for restaurants and catering companies to reduce food waste by donating it to shelters and charities.

According to the article, so far his company has diverted approximately 15,000 kilograms of food waste — enough to feed 25,000 people.

I hope this company or something similar starts operating in more cities across North America!

My husband just made Spaghetti alla puttanesca. It was nice but perhaps a bit too salty/fishy for my taste.

I am really, really glad to see that people are FINALLY starting to consider the other side of food-cw debate.

Do you know that hiding all talk about food behind content warnings actually harms some people? People like me who have fought, and are fighting, to restore their relationship with food. Putting food, even just food talk, behind a cw can trigger harmful behaviors and thoughts for some of us.

It's heartening to see more people speaking up, and more ppl understanding this.

In my garden it is WAY easier to grow spinach than basil. I usually grow basil in big pots so I can keep and eye on it but have masses of spinach out in the garden. So, when I make pesto, I find that cutting at least 50/50 with spinach makes the basil go much farther, you can barely tasted the spinach especially if you like your pesto garlicky and cheesy. I try to keep jars of it in the fridge to make quick pasta meals when it's hot and all else fails.

Almost all of my garden is doing fantastic this year. It's probably due to "Cowboy Wayne" and the load of stuff from his ranch that he brought us in early spring. But, this year seems especially amazing. Look at this turnip. These things are usually not good when they get this big but this one is crunchy, juicy, sweet... perfection with humus for lunch.

kehalo, to asklemmy in What's the general consensus on making private fediverse instances?

I host my own Mastodon instance. If you’re technically proficient enough and don’t mind the extra work, I highly recommend it.

I am hosting mine for the same reason you’re considering it: I don’t want my stuff to disappear and I want to be in control of my own social media destiny as much as possible.

Now, there are some headaches I haven’t seen mentioned here, so let me toss some things out for you:

  1. Until someone follows you on an instance, no one else there will know you exist. Meaning, no one on, say, mastodon.social will see your post tagged with a hashtag—or you generally—until at least one person on the instance follows you.
  2. You will not have an easy time seeing people post history before you start following them because your server doesn’t know about them.
  3. Following hashtags is…not super helpful because your instance isn’t ingesting a lot of data.

You may be thinking, bro, that sucks.

And you’d not be wrong, except for the fact that you’re the admin of your own server and you can do whatever you want with it. So, head on over to GitHub and fork

  1. Fedifetcher. This will ingest alllllllll sorts of stuff for you. Backfill new follows and followers, boosted and favorited threads etc.
  2. GetMoarFediverse. This will allow you to define hashtags and instances or query your db and have the content ingested. Want to see all the posts from from mastodon.social? No big deal.

I’d suggest, if tech savvy enough to go with digitalocean and just admin the whole server yourself, but bump up one level in ram instead of going with a managed hosting solution with less control.

Feel free to message with questions if you have them!

And not a car in sight...

Laisvės Alėja (Independence Way) is a fully pedestrianised street that runs east-west across most of Kaunas.

It is lined with shops, restaurants, cafe/bars, museums, outdoor dining areas, and historical sites (such as the old Presidential Palace, which was used from 1918 until the 1930s). Three-to-four floors of apartments can be found above the shops.

A small tree-lined park can be found in the middle of the street, with bicycle paths and outdoor dining areas on the sides.

During summer, the bars and cafes fill up as lunch approaches, and they remain busy well into the evening (with twilight in Summer sometime around 10:30pm).

Cuisine varies from traditional Lithuanian fare (such as Cepeliniai and Saltibarciai) to modern Italian, Turkish, Georgian, Japanese, American, Thai, and more. (That includes these delicious burritos, tuna salads, and ribs.)

The street begins as Vilnius Gatve at the town hall square in the old city, just near Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers.

It continues for roughly 2.3 kilometres across almost the entire length of the city, to the historic Church of St Michael the Archangel (Sv. Arkangelo Mykolo Baznycia).

It is bisected by a second pedestrianised street running north-south that links it to the war museum, the Zalgris basketball arena, and the university.

The first lab-grown burger cost $330,000 to create in 2013. The price has fallen to just under $10 per burger today, which is remarkable progress in just a decade.

It’s a remarkable scientific success, but the general public is divided over whether it will eat cultured meat (CM) products. Would you?
