#PublicTransit 🚋 advocates, #cyclists 🚲 & #Urbanists throughout #Washington state needed to provide online public comment for the WSDOT’s Highway System Plan, which will seek to promote walking & #cycling and reduce vehicle 🚙 miles traveled.
For those unfamiliar with it, Lemmy is basically a federated version of Reddit, distributed across multiple servers like Mastodon. (For anyone who wants to delve further, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and aussie.zone are three popular Lemmy instances.)
From Mastodon, you can follow any Lemmy group by following its handle, exactly the same way that you would follow a Mastodon account. Any new posts to that group will then begin appearing in your Mastodon feed.
Even better, if you start a thread on Mastodon, you can also post it to a relevant Lemmy group just by including its handle in your post. (Please note this only seems to work with the first post of a thread.)
Book #44, 2023: 1923 by Ned Boulting. The cycling commentator and writer buys an old newsreel at auction, and begins a quest to discover the story of a Belgian cyclist who appears in the film. The year 1923 echoes through the story, which branches out to include war, family, and Sarah Bernhardt. Recommended. #cycling#biogrsohy#reading#books@bookstadon
Well, at least if you buy a Tesla, you're not supporting big oil companies like Exxon — oh wait...
"Oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) is in talks with Tesla (TSLA.O), Ford Motor (F.N), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and other automakers to supply lithium, Bloomberg Law reported on Monday citing people familiar with the matter."
Just finished Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds, so have now picked up a #book I've been eager to read for a while. I have a feeling that I'll be wanting a big #bikepacking adventure when I'm finished. #cycling@bookstodon
Finished reading 'Full Tilt' this morning and immediately bought
both 'Tibetan Foothold' and 'The Waiting Land'. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Full Tilt, although I do think the usage of the n-word and some of other casual racism could've been edited out in this printing; having said that I get the feeling the Murphy wouldn't have tolerated such changes. @bookstodon#book#books#cycling
Just like the Rough Stuff Fellowship, it's amazing where you can take a #bicycle. It makes a mockery of all the kit we take for a weekend #bikepacking locally, let alone cycling across continents. @bookstodon#book#books#cycling
With kbin and various Lemmy instances having multiples of the same magazine/sub, wouldn't it be nice if we could bundle individual ones together to see them all consolidated?...
I think we could have multireddits by using tags, no? We'd just need a magazines tags to automatically be applied to any content in it, and then I could just have my #tech feed, my #ask feed, and my #cycling+#bikes+#bicycles feed lol.
I think it would be good to look at cross-posting across multiple magazines/communities too while we're here. It's an adjacent problem here, and I feel like we can find a nice solution for both here.
As things are now, if we just amalgamate 6 different /tech communities, there's going to be a lot of duplicate threads lol. If I want to post a news article to several places, it'd be nice to be able to just list them off and click post just once. Then in the multi-feeds, it'll only be listed once please!
Laisvės Alėja (Independence Way) is a fully pedestrianised street that runs east-west across most of Kaunas.
It is lined with shops, restaurants, cafe/bars, museums, outdoor dining areas, and historical sites (such as the old Presidential Palace, which was used from 1918 until the 1930s). Three-to-four floors of apartments can be found above the shops.
A small tree-lined park can be found in the middle of the street, with bicycle paths and outdoor dining areas on the sides.
During summer, the bars and cafes fill up as lunch approaches, and they remain busy well into the evening (with twilight in Summer sometime around 10:30pm).
Cuisine varies from traditional Lithuanian fare (such as Cepeliniai and Saltibarciai) to modern Italian, Turkish, Georgian, Japanese, American, Thai, and more. (That includes these delicious burritos, tuna salads, and ribs.)
The street begins as Vilnius Gatve at the town hall square in the old city, just near Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers.
It continues for roughly 2.3 kilometres across almost the entire length of the city, to the historic Church of St Michael the Archangel (Sv. Arkangelo Mykolo Baznycia).
It is bisected by a second pedestrianised street running north-south that links it to the war museum, the Zalgris basketball arena, and the university.
lemmy is the more mature platform, whilst kbin is newer and more feature rich.
What it amounts to is that kbin can do things that lemmy can't do, but the things that they both do, lemmy tends to do better. And as kbin is effectively in alpha at the moment, it doesn't have much documentation, making installation and configuration a challenge.
The biggest point of difference in features is that kbin is aware of other fediverse content in a way lemmy isn't. kbin and lemmy both talk to each other really well, but kbin also natively supports other types of fediverse groups (gup.pe, friendica and chirp). kbin also lets you see non threadiverse content, by attaching hashtags to groups. So if you set up say a cycling group on kbin, you can also make the group watch the #cycling tag, any any mastodon or other micoblogging content will appear on a special tab in your cycling group.

Now that is a powerful feature. Great way to fill a feed with content too.
One of the interesting details the ABC shows is that retailers along the strip significantly overestimate the percentage of customers who arrive by car.
While retailers assume nearly two-thirds of customers drive to their stores, the real figure is closer to 30%.
Already, just under 70% of customers either walk, catch public transport, or cycle.
Most of those who drive to businesses in the area park in one of the 2000 parking spots off Sydney road, rather than the 450 on the road itself.
Meanwhile, the lack of a dedicated protected bike lane makes it far less attractive to cyclists. The cars significantly slow down trams. And the exhaust fumes make it unpleasant for pedestrians.

ELI5: What's the differences between Lemmy and kbin?
I'm out of the loop.
