Varieties of rice

CeylonGroceries.com sells to the US and Canada. I mentioned that I buy (unpolished) millets from them - https://ceylongroceries.com/collections/millets

Why I buy millets: https://youtu.be/aeuYPp-Uf-E

Now I notice they have a good variety of rices, including some I've never heard of: https://ceylongroceries.com/collections/rice-flour-noodles

I ask those who know rice: which ones should I try first?

I am particularly intrigued by this one: https://ceylongroceries.com/collections/rice-flour-noodles/products/karuppu-kavuni-black-kavuni-rice-%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%81%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%81-%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%B5%E0%AF%81%E0%AE%A9%E0%AE%BF-%E0%AE%85%E0%AE%B0%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%9A%E0%AE%BF

Rainbow chard with yellow veggies

I cooked this mix of vegetables as I usually do, and with many of the ingredients I often use. But I've not had rainbow chard recently, and this bunch was very fresh and large. Garlic stems are also not often available.

Made the desi hummus

I used desi chickpeas — small brown chickpeas — which (I read somewhere) is traditional fo hummus.

More chickpea info here:

Here's the hummus:

Update: oops! that's my general hummus recipe. Here's what I just made:

Back from shopping. A good (and surprising) find at Walmart: brown chickpeas, 8lb for CAD10. I read (or was told by @LifeTimeCooking ) that these are the traditional choice for hummus.

Will try it soon — like tomorrow.

Sometimes I start with a recipe but diverge considerably from it. Still, the end result is usually tasty, as was this tempeh stew.

NutritionFacts.org has a simple and easy recipe for a healthy scramble. They specify a package of extra-firm tofu, but if you prefer a whole-food diet, you can readily substitute 350g / 12 oz tempeh.

Soybean + 3 grains tempeh done. (3 grains if you consider quinoa a grain)

This batch turned out very well: 1320g / 2 lb 14.6 oz.

The black specks in the cross-section are black quinoa (from the tricolor quinoa I used).

Soaking 1.5 cups soybeans tonight to start a batch of tempeh tomorrow. The grain part will be:

0.5 c einkorn
0.5 c sprouted millet (variety unknown)
0.5 c sprouted tricolor quinoa

I'll cook that all together in mygrain cooker, then begin the tempeh.

Leisureguy,
@Leisureguy@mstdn.ca avatar

@EllieK I made a beluga-lentil-and-foxtail-millet tempeh that turned out very well. I do like to combine legume and grain in the tempeh, though sometimes I'do legume and legume (e.g., black-eyed-pea-and-peanut; or chickpea-penaut).

I still prefer whole soybeans, but I do know most prefer hulled and cracked. And thanks for pointing out BROL. Great combo.
