I'm . The sound of the train blowing its horn as it passes my house makes me cover my ears in pain. But the throbbing bass of the engine that causes a deep pressure in my chest from the vibration makes me feel happy.

When I was a kid, I used to crank up the bass of my parents' stereo and sit directly against the woofer to feel that pressure. They would always yell at me to turn it down. I've always loved that feeling.

I had to make a copy of this call from today's James O'brien show (14 Aug 2023 https://www.globalplayer.com/catchup/lbc/uk/46vyD81/ )

For context, the caller was on a few minutes before but their signal was bad.

These are two different concept:

Hyper focus: The ability to focus on one topic during a longer period than the average without interruption.

Area of expertise/interest: An area where the person has a greater expertise and interest than the average. The area can change during time.

Example:
I hyper focus when I read during hours on a topic.

I can read about the same area of expertise on a daily basis.

Often we hyper focus on the area of expertise. But, it's not always the case. Again, each Autist ist unique.

Do any of my or friends have the technical skills to help me with a project?

@actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd @btaroli

I've tried working any number of AutoGPT-like apps, Code Interpreter etc ... but can't get anywhere with my skills...

I'd like to create a {Python} app that I could run that asked for a news search term and time period and gave me links and summaries on a specific topic.

Something like "give me news reports on 'autism and police' in the last 7 days."

This was simple a couple of months ago... but with the restricted web search on most of the platforms, I'm stymied.

I'd use it to create weekly summaries... and for further reading lists on my articles.

For that matter, a separate app (?) could scan an article I've written and suggest related further reading links. Mebbe fund articles on my own site to cross link.

Anybody able to help?

So what's the idea behind using the hashtag?

It feels unwelcoming to me. Like I shouldn't engage here if I'm not autistic enough. I'm second guessing my own experiences less by the day, but from what I've heard almost everyone with late diagnosis have felt gaslit and left out throughout their lives. With all the self doubt that entails, seeing people proclaiming they're actually autistic feels like yet another "you don't belong here".

ratcatcher,
@ratcatcher@neurodifferent.me avatar

@neversosimple

Anyone who is diagnosed, self-diagnosed or thinks they might be autistic is welcome.

My understanding is that on Twitter, the hashtag was used by people who were not themselves autistic (some clinicians, parents of autistic children, etc) and it was felt that there should be a place for people who are to discuss autism amongst themselves.

There is also the @actuallyautistic group. If you mention it in a post, that post will be sent to people who follow it. Might be worth giving it a follow

How many interviews have actually been done with homeless people? How many of their stories of struggle have you actually heard?

Few to none I'll bet. That's because everyone involved in producing the glamour of a thriving society makes it a priority to suppress just how badly it's failing.

Thanks, very neat! I hope they become useful for people whose voices are under/mis-represented, the way the signal of helped replace some noise from autism speaks on and spread from there.

Looking into that tag led to finding this article, which seems interesting and I will post here, but haven’t fully read yet.

I feel a post coming on... sometimes sharing my process helps...

"Every Clock Is Handgun Pointed at My Head"

Blv it or not... these are the seeds I planted in my notebook:

"Every clock is a handgun pointed at my head

How much does a dream weigh? Enough to slump shoulders... break backs. Strangely? Even more as they die

Dream dreamed dreamt dread

T -10 9 8 7 6... Countdown to anxiety

Doctor forcing labor

Shrieking at the factory door

Time to next paycheck measuring the distance to starvation

Clock tower time to disaster

Einstein measured time as distance between events. I don't give a shit about events. Just the quality of the travel between them...

You don't need a book to know when the sun rises

when to eat

when to sleep

when to pick berries on the fence row

Bible

Landmines of duty waiting to go off

Every tick is an unspoken command

Sale

Punch clock

Daily planner

Best seller"

Trust me this is going somewhere... Let's see where we end up.

@admin I tend to disagree. We read the room. We just don’t touch the same songs.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic

btaroli,
@btaroli@federate.social avatar

@admin On a philosophical note, we sense the same room. How we perceive it is quite different. The larger point allistics may miss is that, despite their normative socialized interpretation, even THEY don’t perceive the room the same way. They just have more of a shared social expectation of what the room should be. Ultimately, “read the room” is less about “this is how I see the room” and more about ableism and shaming.

Sure I can do that. But the room an person reads exists in Takiwatanga (autistic version of reality/autistic homeworld). It's quite literally not the same room that neurotypicals experience.

This does not mean that our perception is flawed or wrong- it's not. Our sensations track truth just as well or badly as the next person's.

This richness of being able to view reality from more than one valid perspectives should be celebrated by humanity. Instead, people argue about it.

We are not "mysterious". Reality itself is. It gives me joy to wake up every morning into a world that I know to be subtly but profoundly different from the world most people get experience.

Absolutely! I can split my stims in two main categories regarding the situation to keep it simple.

The first is a stim to calm down when I have high anxiety or in an anxious environment.

The second is a stim of joy. It give me positive emotions, sensations.

They aren't really different looking from the outside but have a positive and feel different from the inside. And, that's what matters for us.

I get really sick of newly "hatched" auts.

REALLY sick of hearing about how you have the experience to make value judgements about the experience of being diagnosed as a child.

I get that the diagnosis is a revelation.
And it is. I agree .
But i want to puke remembering how that "privilege" was used to justify telling kids "IF you manage to prove that you are able to emulate a person you can be awarded honorary adult status"

Otherwise you count as something between a child and an animal

btaroli, (edited )
@btaroli@federate.social avatar

@CatHat This is curious. I don’t feel because I “successfully” all these decades. I can’t know if it would have been better had I been as a kid. I never got into real trouble, but there are many parts of my youth I don’t care to remember. It was awful. Each time I peeled back the , thinking that I knew why, there was more. @CatHat The closest I ever got to detection was my 5th grade . She warned my mom about . No follow up.

My son’s at age 5 has brought mixed results so far. At age 10 I finally feel like we’re on solid ground. But i thought we were good at age 8 too! I still fear we’re one well-wisher “professional” away from a major setback. I will rejoice when he can shake off adult “support.” @actuallyautistic

A situation has made clear that my partner still doesn't believe me about my experiences

despite seeing the day-to-day evidence

despite me writing him thousands of words about it (with sources)

despite me performing it out loud in therapy for him.

I get that they are atypical, and extremely far from his experience.

But I got kicked out of the house at 15 because I would not tell a lie.

I think I deserve more trust and understanding than this.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic definitely get dehydrated easily, for me it's combined with some other issues, but I track my fluid intake now and I used to have "drink" in my calendar every 2 hours so I've got much better now. I also try to have 2 or more drinks on the go at any one time so I can drink what I want and don't just not drink because I don't want the drink that is in front of me at that moment.

SingingNala,

@actuallyautistic @theautisticcoach @LunaDragofelis That was me when I worked retail. Now, I have a gallon of water, or a water bottle, at or by my desk at any given time. Because I now live 5,000 feet above sea level. And in the summer, I don't play around with hydration. It can be costly to ignore hydration up this high.
