hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @VeryBadLlama But who would buy it, and for how much?

I'm able to afford my very cheap house in an area with a low cost of living because I have a remote, high-paying technical job in a high cost of living area and I don't have to commute. We are very fortunate, and yet we still scrape to make it work. I dread the thought of where we would be if we hadn't been so fortunate.

The cost of living has gone up, but the wages have not. Wealth inequality is at an extreme, worse than it was even leading up to the great depression. People are hurting, and it's not because of cheap sources of leisure that help them forget that pain for a moment. Selling the TV you were left for $100, if you can even find a buyer, and then staring miserably at the walls instead won't make a home affordable, because it's a one-time sum and is a tiny drop next to the hundreds of thousands that a home costs.

Today I have completed 56 circuits of the sun! Thats a flipping long way to walk I’m telling you ! 😜

It’s been a really good day, spoken with family on the phone , been out to lunch with Mrs Squirrel, chatted with friends on Mastodon!

Got some nice presents , including some squirrel themed ones, everyone loves da squirrel , including it seems Mrs Squirrel 😂

I wanted to catch up with a really close friend this afternoon , sadly that didn’t happen. I hope that I will catch up with them tomorrow !

Thanks to all my friends on here & all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you ! 😊🫶🐿️🖖

I saw a post on another social network that felt a little aggressive about people needing to learn to use tone tags (to which most of the replies were people who had never encountered a tone tag), and I found myself wondering... Do folks find this useful?

Honestly, I have a hard time remembering what they all mean much less use them as an indicator of what tone I should be applying to what I'm reading or writing.

@spika @actuallyautistic I think /s is tremendously helpful. The rest, not so much. As you already mentioned, I have a hard time remembering them all, so it ends up being more confusing, not less. hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@GreenRoc @Susan60 @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence Einstein! I was fascinated to learn that he didn't walk or talk till he was 3, like my brother (who is undiagnosed but likely autistic like me). The refusal to learn to drive, wearing the same outfit every day, lack of attention to personal appearances, digestive issues, trouble with relationships... There is so much to suggest that he was one of us. And he changed the world in many ways, both positive and negative, with his profound insights.

Another, less famous name also comes to mind, as an example of a different type of neurodivergence: Godel. I'm pretty sure he was paranoid schizophrenic, based on his life story. And he fundamentally changed the way we understand mathematics, indirectly contributing to computability theory as well.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@Susan60 @GreenRoc @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence That was nagging at me when I wrote my reply earlier. All these famous (probably) autistic men, but where are the role models for autistic women? Hidden, forgotten, just because they didn't have the "right" physical gear. But they existed, without a doubt, even if we aren't allowed to know who they were.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@26pglt @sahat @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence Well said, and I relate to this strongly. Even after the differences are identified, the gaslighting and trauma go on. My needs are regularly dismissed without further consideration by both strangers and people close to me, because they don't align with how other people feel about things.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@26pglt @null_hypothesis @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the genes they identify that are correlated with multiple kinds of neurodivergence are in fact genes which modulate neurotypicality in some way. They always look at neurotypicality as the default setting, as if that is how the system is supposed to work and neurodivergences are failure modes. But I think there are multiple ways the system is supposed to work (evolutionarily speaking). If they put them on equal footing in their research, they'll learn a lot more about all of them, because their assumptions won't mask patterns that don't match them anymore.

At rest, the average body consumes 20% to 25% of the body's energy. That equates to 350 to 450 calories for the average person. The energy comes mainly from glucose.

https://www.livescience.com/burn-calories-brain.html

brains create 42% more information at rest.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/01/140131130630.htm

This could equate to 497 to 639 calories just to power our resting brain, let alone when we're hyperfocused or overstimulated.

The single best way to support neurodivergent people, in the workplace and in life, is to educate yourself about the different forms of neurodivergence.

Learn about the needs, strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, perspectives, and, most importantly, lived experiences of neurodivergent people.

The right way to do this is to listen to neurodivergent people. Follow us on social media. Read our blogs. Get to know us IRL. If you aren't listening to us, you aren't learning about us; you are only learning other people's opinions about us.

As with any minority group, learning about neurodivergent people will force you to reassess many assumptions about people and society that you don't even realize you hold. You will grow as a person. And that is exactly what we need from you.

@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@dpnash @CynAq @FrightenedRat @allautistics @actuallyautistic Yes, that's where I picked it up from. But the gate-keeping against self-diagnosed people was a very real problem there. I was self-diagnosed for 13 years before getting my medical diagnosis, and there were a number of very heated "conversations" on Twitter during that time that made me feel pretty unwelcome. So I'm very much on board for resolving that issue for newer members of our community.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@Aerliss @marytzu @dpnash @CynAq @FrightenedRat @allautistics @actuallyautistic We do have to fix attitudes if we want to really solve the problem. But we can at least choose hashtags that don't exacerbate the problem.

hosford42,
@hosford42@techhub.social avatar

@yourautisticlife @Aerliss @marytzu @dpnash @CynAq @FrightenedRat @allautistics @actuallyautistic Don't petition them. That would be weird and pushy. But don't resist change just on the basis of the current status quo, either. If the tag is better, it will catch on eventually. In the meantime, it's fine to use both or whichever suits you personally.

As for the gatekeepers: I've dealt with people who think self-dx isn't valid. Correcting them about who the hashtag is for won't be quick. In fact, it won't be at all. The only thing we have control over when it comes to that type of person is how easily the hashtag or other words we are using can be manipulated to mean something unintended.
