Is it a very autisticy thing that I once, as a grown adult, thought it was a good idea to make my own Charlie Brown zig zag T-shirt and then wear it out in public with khaki cargo shorts, and I only thought it was mildly quirky when I did? 🤔😆

Or that even now I have ideas for how to make an even better one?

Context: I didn't know I was autistic at the time. I do know though.

I'm finding that I'm really obsessed with practicing UV unwrapping in Blender and coming up with clean, simple, and attractive UV maps. Everyone else seems to loathe doing this. Is this the ? 😆

  • Also, Blender 4's native tools are pretty good. I'm mostly only using third party apps occasionally and just for better packing when I do.

** I also used to really love paper folding long before computers were a thing. Maybe that's part of it too? 🤔

A thing I don't get about (one of many things)

Why does everyone talk about the weather shortly after greeting each other?

"Um? Yes, I too went outside. That's how we both got here."

Did they think you didn't notice on the way over? 🤔

@actuallyautistic

JeremyMallin,
@JeremyMallin@autistics.life avatar

Also, why do cars have consoles with weather reports? You're outside already. You already know it's too cold, too hot, or comfortable

"It's raining." The car has windows. You can probably see that for yourself. If not, maybe you shouldn't be driving.

Turns out there's a name for the inability to form mental images, aphantasia, and it seems to correlate with autism. I certainly have this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphantasia

JeremyMallin,
@JeremyMallin@autistics.life avatar

@poloniousmonk @actuallyautistic It's weird because the opposite of aphantasia, called hyperphantasia, also seems to be more common with autism. I think I have hyperphantasia. I can form very vivid, very detailed 3-dimensional holographic mental images.

I think there are other instances where opposite conditions are both more common with autism. I wonder why.

I was well into adulthood when I finally figured out why no bath towel ever seems absorbent enough.

  1. I'm ; so, any moisturev at all on my skin greatly bothers me.

  2. Skin soaks up water like a sponge. Even if you remove all the surface moisture, some water absorbed by the skin still makes its way back out to the surface.

  3. Most bath towels truly are awful regardless.

Wondering if this is an autism thing, or a me thing:

When they cast an actor in a movie, in a speaking part, but then have someone else sing and the actor just lipsyncs it. It's jarring, it throws me out of the movie and all I can think is "that's not his/her voice, how am I supposed to go along with this?"
We're watching a musical. And an actor is lipsyncing to someone else singing.

JeremyMallin,
@JeremyMallin@autistics.life avatar

@ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic Yeah.
Dubbed voices are tough on me too. I think I have an auditory processing issue that has led me to rely a lot on lipreading, and this interferes with that.

I'm curious… what's the definition of "active users" versus "total users" regarding instances? How are those calculated?

The Pixelfed instance I'm on reports well over 100k users, but only 5.4k active users. I don't see how there are that many inactive users. What's up? 🤔

The other (not this one) Mastodon instance I'm on has more active users but far fewer total.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic
Phase 0: (47-48 years)
Vague sense of struggling and being different. No idea why. Some incorrect guesses.

Phase 1: (a year or so)
Listening to Autistics on social media and thinking "That can't be autism because I do that too."

Phase 2: (a month or so)
Listening to Autistics describe my life exactly, except they were talking about themselves.

Phase 3: (about a week)
Self assessments (RBQ, RAADS-R, AQ)

Phase 4: (a few days)
Maybe I am.

Phase 5:
I am.

I wonder if this is an thing… I very often think about people who have drifted out of my life even years later—my old classmates from school, my campers from when I was a summer camp counselor, former colleagues, people I knew on defunct social media and early chat rooms. Every now and again, I even spend some time Googling to see if I can find people from many years ago.

Autistic people are often attracted to one particular line in a song and will sing that one line aloud or in their brain for days, possibly in the singer’s accent. This may be considered a form of stimming, as well as a form of echolalia.

@actuallyautistic

JeremyMallin,
@JeremyMallin@autistics.life avatar

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I think I also do that with particular parts of songs that I can't stand too. I never knew why. I can't explain it as anything other than stimming, but I didn't know that until just recently.

Are there any Autistics who do not have any auditory sensory issues at all? I've found plenty with different auditory triggers than I have—some times even seemingly opposite to mine.

A big part of being autistic for me is being very intentional with my word choices in order to say what I mean and mean what I say.

To follow that up I then start having a bunch of people claim I said something I absolutely did not because they chose to add additional meanings they made up themselves.

I just did that test.

I went in blind and didn't think I'd score too high because as far as I understand what monotropism proposes, I didn't think it fit my profile very well. I tried to answer the questions as accurately as I could, without overthinking.

Well...

The result says I'm more monotropic than 73% of autistic people and 98% of allistic people.

I guess I was misunderstanding what monotropism would feel like, if these results are anywhere near accurate, because I'm quite surprised, to say the least.

Would anyone else like to chime in and discuss this with me a bit? This result was not at all what I was expecting.

An autistic person who is unsure about their understanding and knowledge of something usually has more understanding and knowledge of that topic than non-autistic people who claim to be experts on it. We often under-sell and over-deliver. More often than not non-autistic people do the opposite.

One stereotype about us is we like and . I'm a “yes” and a “no”.

I do like Prime numbers and Odd numbers:

  • 17
  • 13
  • 7

17 is very special.

  • 17 is the 7th Prime
  • 1 is an odd number
  • 7 is an odd number
  • 17 is an odd number
  • 1 + 7 = 8, although an even number, it symbolises infinity and eternity, and us

13 is also special.

  • A Prime
  • An Odd
  • A Fibonacci number

And depending on whom you ask:

  • The 8th Fibonacci number
  • The 7th Fibonacci number

Ironically:

  • The anniversary of my first romantic relationship was on: 1997-07-17. It was my first love who picked that, and she had no idea what my favourite numbers are.
  • My height is 175 cm or 5'75" to 5'85" (depending on whom you ask).
  • Favourite time of the day: 07:00 and 19:00 (7pm). 19 is the 8th Prime. (There's 8 again.)

And I'm . ^_^

How about you? What two stereotypes is you and not you?
