2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...
The 2020 election got me off of facebook and most other social media. Not quite sure how I’ll approach Lemmy going into 2024, seems ok for now and not the dumpster fire that facebook was during 2016 and 2020. If it gets too bad I might block national news & political communities and see if that helps. I already know that Trump/GOP represents fascism in America, so I don’t really need more news to confirm that point or help me make up my mind going into the election.
I have just realised that alien.top seems to be mirroring reddit accounts, posts and comments, without labelling them as such. What is the point of this one way mirroring? As soon as users realise, they are going to just leave. There is no point having a discussion with a bot that cannot respond.
Also not a lawyer, but right to be forgotten applies to search engines to remove articles from the search index. Originally applied to news articles some guy in Spain didn’t want showing up when you google’d his name. The law doesn’t require the publisher to remove the content from their website, but instead requires search engines to remove the links in results.
So if someone’s comment was mirrored to Lemmy AND that comment was indexed by a search engine linking back to a Lemmy instance, then you still have the right to request Google or Bing or whatever to remove those links from search results via the same process.
Sometimes I use an app called Flipboard, but mostly I watch news channels on YouTube. (The big news channels, like ABC and NBC, not “Skeeter’s News Show”.)
Rarely I’ll actually buy a copy of USA Today at the grocery store. I used to get it delivered every day, but they took my house off their route.
And I also run across a lot of articles here on Lemmy.
Yeah, well. I miss Lemmy from July I guess. Now, on any contended topic, I feel it’s no better than Reddit (except for the whole overlords censoring thingy). Have a look at Tildes for a little less stupid news reporting and articles.
I do when its posted to something like Lemmy or Hacker News, if the things you’re posting would interest those kinds of communities you’d at least have a small audience
A lot of people have no objection about receiving news about Palestinians from blatantly pro Israeli outlets. So yeah, there is one Pro Palestinian source, surely the balanced person would take info from both.
In the real world this is certainly true, there are way more Pro-Israel publications and listening to an opposing opinion is wise, but on Lemmy it seems that the vast majority of active persons have been unwilling to accept any Israel source, no matter how tangential.
The double standards have to stop. Either object against both, or read both and decide for yourself.
There’s nothing to say this person doesn’t, and given the amount of flak Israel related sources get it’s worth noting the bias here as well.
But to always call out just Palestinian sources, it smells of cultural oppression
I completely agree, but I am somewhat thrown by the choice of name by this publication. It just lacks a certain professionalism associated with good journalism. This isn’t to say it’s not a worthwhile source, it’s just not the best name. It’s kinda like if someone named their publication the Digital Revolution, the Uprising, or something similar, I’m just gonna cringe a bit and be skeptical from the start.
Looking online I found this site (mediabiasfactcheck.com/electronic-intifada/) which reviews the bias of various media sources. Based on this it’s just a group of international journalists with their publication based out of Chicago. Their information seems to be mostly from grass roots reporting or third and fourth party accounts.
EDIT: I wanted to quickly follow up, I’m reading through the article now and it’s a real shit show for navigating. In general I’m not familiar enough with the people they reference that it’s really hard to get a good read on this article. It’s kinda like if I said that a guy I know named Billy works at the city and he said he spoke with the Mayor who said that crime is on the rise, but the Chief of Police released a report to the contrary. Billy could be worthwhile, but I don’t know Billy and I can’t readily find good references to the Mayor’s statement.
Even the representation of the original referenced article by YNet is kinda shit. For example, they use a reference to Syrian Girl on Twitter who is referencing Yoav Zitun on YNet, who is referencing a paraphrased statement from Lieutenant Colonel A. Zitun states that the Lieutenant ordered the Fighters to shoot everything near the fence and later attacked their own installation so that other troops could move up to it. Syrian Girl makes the connection that Zitun’s reporting indicates that the military was blindly killing everything that moves (including their own troops) and EI runs with that sentiment.
In Zitun’s own article (included at the bottom of the EI article) it is clear that unrestricted firing was only in proximity to the fence itself but other bypasses of firing restrictions were approved separately as needed or were taken by Fighters without approval.
Discord for games with friends, and for a couple niche pieces of software too small for forums.
Lemmy for broad-appeal topics like world news and less niche tech.
And Im not sure if it still counts when I just lurk now, but Reddit for everything else, since none of it moved over to lemmy. Gaming subreddits, more niche tech, history and accedemic topics, local and lifestyle stuff, ect.
I’ve found subscribing via RSS to those niche subreddits great for avoiding reddit even more. Mostly on Lemmy to waste time and for general news. Started reading books and being social IRL more which I feel great about.
The instance has been updated to the latest version of the code. For the next few hours, there might be issues with communication in the fediverse. We are working on it, and everything should return to normal shortly. I'll keep you updated....
Fantastic news, Ernest! I'm sure a lot of people will be happy now that that visible domain blocking / posts disappearing fix should be in. :) That was the most visible issue I noticed coming from your kbin.social folks, anyway. Instance level moderation is also a great and welcome addition and I hope you are able to get some volunteers to assist with active moderation, since it's such a large instance.
It's also good to see commits and changes happening on the kbin code in general. While I've moved my instance over to Mbin, I am still rooting for kbin as well - more hands and more ideas in the "community-focused posting" section of the Fediverse can only lead to further improvements as well as more choices for people looking to spin up their own instances, be it Lemmy, kbin, or Mbin.
Like others, I came over when Reddit was banning 3rd party apps. Many communities were being started and I wanted to help. So I chose one community to form here and try and grow. And we did! There was a time a short while in the little KC Chiefs community was in the top 100 communities on Lemmy world. I knew that wouldn’t last...
The sorting algorithm changes are what I’ve been waiting for forever. A bit disappointed it’s taking so long. I basically never see many communities I’m subbed to. I miss having a local city community. It has me constantly thinking of just dealing with Reddit’s bullshit, cause if it’s not big news or memes, Lemmy ain’t cutting it.
I’ve seen some sketchy motels in my time, which is why I stopped staying in them. Hotels, especially major chains tend to be decent to great quality, and are usually cost competitive with AirBnB according to several news stories and lemmy threads over the last 10 months or so. And they have less weird requirements about you doing bed stripping / cleaning before you leave.
Same, I just started using it recently. Facebook was dropping Canadian news in response to new legislation, and while I wasn’t getting news from there I thought I’d explore. I actually really liked the process and subscribed to some areas I was interested in. I haven’t cleaned it up yet, and I want to try FreshRSS but it’s a start.
It’s actually how I get a lot of the content for Lemmy! I found feeds for a few key medical / Canadian health news things and I go off that.
Using FeedBro on web FireFox, and Feeder on Android
I feel like it would be an interesting learning tool cuz I learn a ton on here and it gets me writing without anyone having to hold a gun to my head. I mean like even essay-length or at least essay-worthy treatments of things I respond to in longer-form, and even for the shorter-form stuff
A key issue would be accounts. It would be a pain to have an account for every class. If it’s one instance with many communities, it might discourage people from participating if everyone in the school can see what you do. Tools like Piazza make it easier to deal with these issues, and they have a lot of other tools specific to courses.
If it’s a general instance for the entire school, then an instance run by students and unaffiliated with the school would be best. Otherwise students wouldn’t feel comfortable using it. I help with the community for my university (UBC) And there’s a lot of content that wouldn’t exist if it was an official thing (reporting issues with professors, asking for help with academic/mental health/relationships, sharing news critical of the school, etc.)
I really do want more academics on the fediverse, but “Lemmy for school” doesn’t feel that useful
The news communities outside of lemmy.ml are probably a better bet than the ones on lemmy.ml, because the lemmy devs themselves seem to hold that kind of view, and they run that instance.
Ah. World news again. The modlog really needs to show which mods are behind the wrong actions. That’s a good screenshot, shitty comments but untrue reasons. Even lemmy code of conduct says that to fix a mod action it should be taken with the mod in question.
I just noticed that there are quite a few users on Reddit from r/WorldNews who are defending Israel unequivocally and when I checked some of the users they seemed to be engaging on topics only about Israel/Palestine and they seem to be extremely active, so I have checked the Internet and there are even some older BBC article and...
My country’s news outlet even has a section that informs us about the disinformation campaigns going on on both sides and addressing/correcting what’s probably the truth.
Looks like you have a year ban at POLICE PROBLEM then a 5 day instance ban on another account. Although, I’m not sure it is an instance ban, I had a similar one that had no community in the modlog but I was still able to comment on other lemmy.ml communities (this could have been a federation bug).
Multiple accounts have had a bunch of removed comments under “Rule 1” and “Rule 2” bans (which are kind of bullshit as they don’t actually reference which set of rules, the modlog doesn’t say which community it was removed from and also most rules are just bullet points and not numbered). Typically these are either bigotry or “Be civil/respsectful”, which way around they are depends on which set of rules. The former is often misused all over lemmy, but the latter can cover any hostile comment.
Currently you have a ~2 month long ban from .ml’s World News, but that does seem to me a problem community from what I’ve been seeing.
This one was funny:
2 months ago - mod - Banned @Ilovethebomb from the community [email protected]
reason: PUNISHMENT TIME BITCH!
2 months ago - mod - Unbanned @Ilovethebomb from the community [email protected]
2 months ago - mod - Banned @Ilovethebomb from the community [email protected]
reason: liberal
I can just imagine the look on the mod’s face when they realised their reason would be published to the modlog, trying to go back and change it only for it all to be set in stone. What’s interesting is they didn’t remove any comments.
Brave has still worked fine throughout all this. I’ve been using it for a while and I wouldn’t have even known about the message if it wasn’t for news articles and Lemmy posts.
Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

Could Lemmy be used as a classroom tool (like having a classroom's own instance)
