hperrin,

I use OnlyOffice specifically because the UI in LibreOffice is atrocious on anything but Linux. I have to use Windows and Mac sometimes.

hperrin,

I’ll believe it when I see it.

hperrin,

We invented Bed Bath & Beyond in that time though. That’s not nothing.

hperrin,

Is it weird to not have a favorite?

hperrin,

You can use royalty free stock photos, like from unsplash.com

what if a human being replaced all drinkable liquids with water??

i feel happy and proud of myself because a few weeks ago i replaced all drinks and soda with just water woa!! i feel ok and very calm most of the time, but is doing this ok?? am i missing out on important vitamins if i don’t drink juice or soda etc?? i know water doesn’t have anything, no vitamins, nothing, just water, but...

hperrin,

I’m pretty sure you’re going to end up in the ER with a Dr Pepper IV. How are you even alive?

hperrin,

The Last Starfighter

It was a really cool movie that I think fondly of from my childhood. There’s been a “potential sequel” in the works for like 15 years.

hperrin,

That makes me sad. I really want a sequel.

hperrin,

There are tons of toys where the fun part is assembling them. Humans love building things. :)

hperrin,

I like it, because it means everything will work on Linux, then I blast the weird OS and install Fedora.

Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts? (libranet.de)

I am in the process of moving out some contacts from Google Contacts, specifically those that I do not have a Gmail address. It's a way for me to give these people a tiny bit more privacy, as I'm doing a cleanup of my contact list. My concern is that Google will still keep their data even after I delete it from my end. Is it so?...

hperrin,

100% yes, absolutely, as a database backup. Whether it’s stored elsewhere or used for any other purpose is another question.

hperrin,

I don’t know if this is its intended purpose, but every time I move I watch Hoarders so I’m compelled to throw away a bunch of my stuff.

hperrin,

Depending on your definition of species, HIV is the HIV of species.

hperrin,

Don’t forget that you can’t haul much because the dumbass designers sloped the walls of your bed. You have plenty of room for friends though, if you could make any.

hperrin,

Because Elon is a god king genius emerald boy who can do no wrong and you’d be a fool to ever doubt his perfection. It would be an honor to go into crippling debt to support him.

hperrin,

The vast majority of pickups don’t have sloped bed walls. The only other one I can think of is the Chevy Avalanche, and they aren’t sloped the whole way to the tailgate, only part way.

hperrin,

Cool, so all the real people whose numbers get spoofed won’t be able to call anyone anymore.

hperrin,

Doctors, pharmacies, basically anyone in the medical industry.

Businessmen, people with sales jobs, basically anyone who needs to coordinate shipping, receiving, transactions, at the scale of a large business.

Anyone in the military.

Lots of government offices, courts, basically all of the executive and judicial offices and administrations for every government.

Should I go on?

hperrin,

Ah, that didn’t come across. No worries. :)

hperrin,

Wait, that’s not already how it works??

hperrin,

No after reading the article, you’re definitely right. I just assumed Android already had that functionality, because that’s how it works on iOS, and usually iOS doesn’t have any features Android is missing.

hperrin,

Transmit math equations into space, but make them all just a little wrong. If someone’s out there, they’ll come by to correct us.

hperrin,

I always thought this was a funny scene, because if you know what the parts of a printer are called, it’s obvious what “PC Load Letter” means. So Michael is obviously just bad at his job.

Load letter sized paper into the paper cassette, in case you didn’t know.

So, if you bought a DVD licensed by Sony, can they now legally enter your house and take your DVD?

No.

Or can Sony have some sort of DRM that prevents the DVD from playing when Sony loses the license agreement?

Yes, and bypassing it would be illegal under the DMCA.

If they’re gonna force you to be a pirate anyway, just be a pirate from the beginning. 🏴‍☠️

hperrin,

Yes, they should. But, they don’t.

hperrin,

It always has.

hperrin,

I just try to avoid giving money to any of the tech/media giants. Doesn’t mean I’ll never buy anything from them, but I’ll actively seek to find alternatives to their products.

hperrin,

If you’re looking for an alternative to Gmail, may I suggest Port87, which will also organize your email automatically. I created it because of how terrible my experience with Gmail was.

hperrin,

I heard the other day that Hobby Lobby doesn’t use barcodes, which is really inconvenient for the staff and the customers. I’m presuming it’s for some religious reason like “mark of the beast” or something.

hperrin,

Let me get you a copy of Ultimate Boot CD. Or, are you more of a Hiren’s BootCD user?

hperrin,

I haven’t had any issue with Bluetooth audio on Fedora.

hperrin,

The unfortunate fact is that most people don’t care about their privacy until it’s violated. It’s weird.

hperrin,

Apple Maps is a good alternative if you have an iPhone. Apple may not be a whole lot better, but at least they aren’t an advertising company.

hperrin,

It is sustainable if we start eating our dead. But I distinctly remember there being a movie about that and people were unhappy with it.

hperrin,

Yes it is. It is malware at this point. (It’s trying to trick you into clicking ads.) If I can invite you to try Port87, it’s an email service that I wrote that does the opposite. (Keeps spam out of your inbox, rather than inserting spam into it.)

Full disclosure: I developed and run Port87, and as such, have a financial interest in it.

hperrin,

Kind of. It’s called tagged addressing or subaddressing, and the fact that you can do that with both services is where the similarities end. With Gmail, it’s just another address that goes to your inbox. With Port87, whatever you put after the dash or plus sign is the label it goes to in your account. That way, it’s automatically organized for you. And you can make a label screen senders before their email is delivered. That way, a label that’s meant for people, like “[email protected]” will only get emails from real people.

hperrin,

Oh awesome! I’ll send you a DM. :)

hperrin,

They’ve only recently started making the ads look like unread emails to try to trick you into clicking them.

hperrin,

That’s not an option for the mobile app.

hperrin,

Oh wow. Thank you.

hperrin,

Fixed!

hperrin,

Thanks! This is fixed now. That’s the danger of the app’s CSS needing the page not to scroll, but the website’s CSS needing the opposite.

hperrin,

Nothing. But I already use Windows, macOS, and Linux. Linux is my main OS, but to develop stuff for the other systems, I have to keep them around. I hate using them, but I have to.

hperrin,

Not all. It’s made of mostly open source components though, with proprietary parts added on top. Here are the open source components it uses:

Components by others:

  • Node.js
  • Express.js
  • Haraka
  • SvelteKit
  • Svelte

Components made by me:

  • Nymph.js
  • Svelte Material UI

(These lists are not exhaustive.)

I am also going to incorporate Nephele (the WebDAV server) and a yet to be named IMAP server into it, which are open source projects of mine.

hperrin,

I don’t believe there’s any RFC that says I can’t or shouldn’t do what I’m doing. The only RFC concerning subaddressing I can find is RFC 5233 (and the one it obsoletes). That one only concerns sieve filtering, which I’m not doing, and it specifies that any character can be configured as the separator character. The three examples it gives are “+”, “#”, and “–“.
