For the purpose of algorithm verification, the final and/or pushdown automaton or probably sometimes even Turing Machines are used, because they are easier to work with. “Real” regular expressions are only nice to write a grammar for regular languages which can be easily interpreted by the computer I think. The thing is, that regexs in the *nix and programming language world are also used for searching which is why there are additional special characters to indicate things like: “it has to end with …” and there are shortcuts for when you want that a character or sequence occurs
at least once,
once or never or
a specified number of times back to back.
In “standard” regex, you would only have
() for grouping,
for 0 or any number of occurances (so a* means blank or a or aa or …)
as combining two characters/groups with exclusive or (in programming, a+ is mostly the same as aa* so this is a difference)
and sometimes some way to have a shortcut for (a+b+c+…+z) if you want to allow any lower case character as the next one
So there are only 4 characters which have the same expressive power as the extended syntax with the exception of not being able to indicate, that it should occur at the end or beginning of a string/line (which could even be removed if one would have implemented different functions or options for the tools we now have instead)
Latino is a word that springs from spanish. It isn’t actually an English word, it just got borrowed.
Lol what? Where do you think English gets me out of its words.
So, not only was the word co-opted from Latino people
Copoted? Are you kidding?
the crazy crackers decided that they could ignore the objections of Latinos to the change to their words
“Their” words? The term originated from LGBT AMERICAN Latinos. It’s an English term because it originated in American by Americans Latino heritage. You need to stop gatekeeping basic words.
if you don’t know any latinos well enough to ask about this kind of thing
Ask about what kind of thing? If they don’t like it that’s totally fine. I really don’t care one way or the other. It has 0 impact on me. But to say the word itself is racist and co-opted is also just stupid
and he’ll do this half hour long rant in spanglish about it that is impressive in both scope and venom. And you don’t even wanna hear his mom go off about it! She gets mean lol.
What does this have to do with anything other than people can have preferences
I’m a pretty new Linux user, started using a basic Mint installation on the old desktop I use as part of my stereo/tv setup. All in all couldnt be happier with how easy and flexible it’s been, but one little thing is bugging the crap out of me and I haven’t a clue how to fix....
I posted this as a comment in another post but when I got done I realized it would probably just be better as its own post. I’m sure I could find the answers I need myself but frankly I trust the userbase here more than most online articles....
Okay so I am typing as someone who has helped local businesses set up computer systems. Nothing big just one or two person operations. Getting them computers, downloading their software, and making sure they understand how to keep up to date.
I would recommend you use what you are comfortable with at first. Use Windows, get your business in a comfortable position to experiment. And then I would say try Linux out.
I imagine you will need to keep up to date with invoices and the such and you will need to figure out what software you are going to use that. You could always just be basic and use excel sheets but most businesses are using Quick-books or something similar. And a lot of invoicing software does not work on Linux. I would say invoice-ninja is probably the most popular invoicing software on Linux so that would probably get you the best support. This is usually the point people tell me they will stick with windows.
But if you are able to get past that and maybe learn one of those invoicing software applications then I would say you would have next to 0 issues. As you are in a business environment pick something reliable. Debian, Ubuntu LTS, or RHEL. I would test them all in a vm and see what you like best.
Now word documents may cause issues. Maybe. I find libre office works for me 95% of the time. But I don’t do anything very fancy with it. I write essays and maybe every now and then I will include a graph. I would test libre office on windows and see how that works for you. Only office is also an option but I have 0 experience with it.
Also I find that linux is seriously lacking in ways to manage pdfs. At this point I use my browsers built in pdf reader more than any sort of linux app. Digital signing has always been a pain in the ass and the pdf reader I have the best luck out of is Zathura which is a cli application which is definitely not new-user friendly. But this isn’t really an issue it’s just me nitpicking. You can manage pdfs on linux just as well as windows it just may not be as user friendly some times.
You mentioned you are worried about some video formats not working on linux. May I ask what sort of video formats those are. I find vlc or mpv to have great support for most if not all video formats.
My recommendation would be to use linux. I love it. But this is a new business. Use what works for you as much as possible. Get to the point where you have the funds and free time to experiment and try linux. Poke around with some open source apps in windows and see how they work. Invoice-Ninja and libre office both have windows versions.
I wish you luck with your endeavors and I hope my comment has helped somewhat

I made the jump about 2 months ago for the same reasons you’re considering. My job also being very similar in usage to yours. Literally 0 issues so far, couldn’t be more satisfied that I made the jump. I went with mint and there was basically zero learning curve for me coming from w10.
48 years old, currently have no investments. My net worth is my car and the clothes on my back, and I don’t ever want to be in this situation again....
Index funds because none of us (including the professionals who study them all day long) know enough about individual companies and the future of the economy to pick winners consistently. Investing in “everything” averages out the winners and losers and gives you the natural growth of human activity.
Tax protected accounts because you’ll make withdrawals at a time when your income is (presumably) lower, and deferring income to that time means deferring taxes to the lower tax bracket. In the US, tax protected accounts have special purposes: education, healthcare, retirement.
At 48, education is probably only relevant if you want to pay for kids’ college, and that’s what [www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc313](529 plans) are for.
You are definitely coming to the point in life where, regardless of your general health, you will begin to incur healthcare costs. In the US, that’s an incredibly complex topic, but one aspect to be aware is [www.healthcare.gov/…/health-savings-account-hsa/](Health Savings Account). You have to be on ‘high deductible’ insurance to qualify for these, so probably not empoyer-sponsored insurance, but if you’re self-insuring through the marketplace, many of the lowest-premium plans qualify. HSA will let you save around $4000/year tax-deductible and tax-free, with the restriction that it can only be used for healthcare costs (not insurance premiums) until age 65, at which point the money becomes available for any purpose, still tax-free.
Retirement is probably you main long-term concern. If your employer offers a 401(k), you can put up to $22k in that every year. If your income is $42k, you pay $3200 in OASDI and around $1500 in Federal income tax. Putting $20k in a 401(k) will reduce your declarable income to $22k, your OASDI tax to $1700 and Federal tax to $0, effectively giving you an extra $3000/year to spend/save. 401(k) money is fully taxable when withdrawn, but if you have to withdraw $18k/year (1500/month) after retirement, that is still below the Federal tax threshold (depending on your social security benefits).
For sure, if your employer offers any kind of match to your 401(k) contributions, contribute at least enough to get all of that match. It’s literally free money.
Non-employer retirement accounts are IRAs, either Traditional (tax deductible contributions, tax deferred withdrawals) or Roth (taxable contributions, tax free withdrawals), with $6500/year contribution limits. Roth makes retirement planning very easy, because however much you have saved is what you can spend, but they also mean paying taxes on that money today. In your case, at a marginal tax rate of (7.65+12) = 19.65%, that means $1280/year, where, as with the 401(k), it looks like your after-retirement tax rate will be around 0%, anyway. For most people who qualify, traditional IRA is the lower cost solution, even though it increases the after-retirement tax cost.
Finally, I’m not a pro, this is all just information I’ve picked up. If you’re really unsure, it might be worth your peace of mind to find a fee-only financial advisor and pay them a few hundred dollars for a consultation. Think of it like therapy for your financial mental health. They’ll give you completely boiler-plate advice, but they know all this stuff inside and out, and should be able to set you on a good path in just one meeting. Don’t sign up for an annual contract.
I got an old Windows 7 laptop that was going to be thrown out and decided to put Linux on it (see previous thread here). Most people suggested I go with the latest stable version of Debian, so that’s what I installed. I’ve mostly used Windows, but I do have some experience with Ubuntu....
for 1, in linux no output is often indicitive of no problem. To verify if your previous command exited successfully, type ‘echo $?’ at the command line and if its anything but 0 its an error.
For 3, I do the same but since I’m the only user I auto login so its still just one password to enter to get to a desktop.
Different languages have different conventions. For example, the standardized variety of my language allows 11/(0)9/2001, 11/(0)9/01, 11.(0)9.2001, 11.(0)9.01, 2001-09-11, 2001/09/11, 2001.09.11 (personally I usually use 11/09 without the year and 2001-09-11 with the year).
Yeeah that panel. The only problem is opening the start menu with “super” though. You can always add a “default” panel.
Maybe do it like this: create a keyboard shortcut ctrl+alt+t for konsole, whyever it is not default. Then remove all panels and run qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer 0 0 1 (alias that to “logout” in your .bashrc, its a horrible command).
Then remove all panels and logout. Log back in, add a default panel and maybe you are already good. Maybe log out again. The only default panel normally always gets the correct start menu. Its a bit messed up.
To switch between silverblue and kinoite you can just rebase, but make sure to backup all your “dotfiles” (the hidden configs for all the apps) and start plain, as you dont want to mix these.
There is a youtube video on exactly that somewhere.
Its not organic haters, but a witch hunting crybully cult called GrapheneOS that I holed off away from most of the internet with years of effort, that drops 4-7 downvotes on every comment I make. They leave out one or two comments to make the downvoting look organic, but this comment getting downvotes makes 0 sense. They chase me on every possible platform, Reddit, Matrix, XMPP, Telegram and even Lemmy.
Sorry for the lore, hopefully its short and not too annoying.
Thank you for your response. May I ask (since you seem very knowledgeable): Could a singular instance manipulate their backend votes on a single post and have it replicate in order to garner more/less interest?
There’s one where a guy sticks his arm in a blood pressure monitor and then zombies rip his arm off his body while it’s still in there and it reads 0 over 0.
I am so so divided on if I should vote for biden or not. I wanna vote third party to at least do something or should I just stay home and protest and advocate where I can? Thoughts?
Right, but the point still stands that voting tactically just reinforces the status quo.
Two examples from the last election:
Lisbon, which gets to decide 48 of the seats (the most):
PS (currently leading party) won 21 of the 48 seats in Lisbon. If half their voters actually spread their votes amongst the left, the second-largest party (PSD) would still have only got 13, the IL party 4, and the far right party 4. The power of the right would not have changed, but PS would only have 10 while the left would be a lot more powerful, and we would not have been subjected to a majority victory from PS.
Portalegre, which gets to decide 2 of the seats (the least):
PS won both, with 47% of the votes. PSD won 0 with 23%. In this scenario, if half of the PS votes went to the left, then PS would still have 1, and PSD would also have got 1 - hardly a change on the surface, but the result is that people could look at it and see the other left parties also have some decent representation, maybe it’s not crazy to vote for them and they are a viable alternative. Instead, because the votes went all to PS, everyone is now engaged in a self-fulfilling prophecy: “I should vote for PS! Why? Because they’re the closest party to the left with a change of winning. Why? Because everyone always votes for PS.”.
And that’s how you end up with the same two parties in power for 49 years, while everyone is always complaining about how much they suck the whole time and that nothing changes: “We have to vote for X, because not X doesn’t have a change of winning, because we’re always voting for X; also, not X would probably be just as corrupt and incompetent as X because I’m just guessing they are”. I’ve been hearing that logic since I was a child - the words and rhetoric are ingrained in my brain, and every time I hear the word “elections” the voices pop up in my head.
Yeah, it’s much more interesting that way and a curious thing that you don’t find those numbers anywhere anymore. It’s also from interest that almost the entire 2014 numbers are during a complete and utter stop of content deployment. Almost 12 month of absolute 0 content updates in favour to rush out HoT. And it still had better numbers than everything that came afterwards up to EoD.
Though it’s revenue . Squeezing more out of less players can highten the revenue as well, and Anet got nuked from orbit by NCSoft pre-EoD.
RAID doesn’t checksum and heal the rotten data. It’s game over before you even have a filesystem on top of it, because said filesystem can’t directly access the underlying disks because of the RAID layer.
Errors will occur, and RAID has no way of handling it. You have a RAID1, disk 1 says it’s a 0, disk 2 says it’s a 1. Who’s right? RAID can’t tell, btrfs and ZFS can. RAID won’t even notice there’s a couple flipped bits, it’ll just pass them along. ZFS will just retry the read on both disks, pick the block that matches the checksum, and write the correct data back on the other disk. That’s why people with lots of data loves ZFS and RAIDZ.
The solution isn’t more reliable hardware, the solution software that can tell you and recover from your failing hardware.
I suffered with it a lot, personally. Pretty much every food tasted different, and most of it was horrible for about 1 year (after the initial ~3 months of 0 smell). I lost a lot of weight because I just couldn’t eat anything, everything had a horrible taste that I cannot compare to anything and I was really depressed about it. I started experimenting with vastly different foods that I was used to eating and that worked a bit. After about 1,5 years some tastes slowly started creeping back and it’s still in progress. Some foods now just simply taste different to what they used to (but not bad), some still taste bad, and some taste exactly like I remember.
This whole thing was/is really depressing for me personally. I don’t have any positives about it.
They are lying, or to be more exact, lying by omission. Of course there is bone density differences, on top of the obvious skeletal ones. The “hormones will change their muscles,” is a red herring. Muscle fiber density remains unchanged, drugs or no drugs, all they have to do is go to the gym and they will develop musculature that is different to actual women. This is why they seem to olpy focus on “muscle mass,” over muscle fiber density. No way they do not know the difference.
Not to mention that the argument that we should okay giving developing children/teens hormones is also a false argument. Since when are we okay risking chemically castrating children? Which will either affect them biologically and/or mentally during such important time of their lives. There is next to 0% objective research on the subject. Despite what proponents would like people to believe. For feelings does not equate empirical research.
So is centre of gravity, and other factors, that can play a role in sports. Men will always develop more upper body strenght over women. They are cherry picking arguments hoping that most people who do not know a lot of Human Anatomy will fall for it. In order to gain public opinion. It’s underhanded, or at least it looks like it.
Hell, even skin elasticity and skin patterns are different between men and women.
