Its been weird, I feel like I’m kind of missing something, same kind of FOMO, but when I actually go back to it I see I’m not missing anything at all. Lemmy is pretty neat, but haven’t fully gotten the hang of it yet. Just discovered how to sub another instance today, so progress is being made.
I’ve been back to reddit probably 20 times in the past 3 months, and every time I’m waiting for the dopamine hit, and it never kicks in. Its just flat now, the content just isn’t that interesting. Its all pretty cringy, and I’m pretty much over it, just going there out of habit, chasing the content dragon that no longer exists.
Facebook is useless, Xitter is dead, reddit lost its way. I’m enjoying Lemmy so far, but it seems to be missing the viral content, ultra red-hot breaking news that reddit used to have.
The fascinating thing about PeerTube right now is that the frontend experience actually seems to be best on other services. This is primarily because discoverability between instances is fairly poor due to both federation mechanics and due to the nature of bootstrapping social. Because Lemmy and Mastodon feature their own human...
I was foolish enough to click those links and now they’re permanently and unstoppably federating with my instance. If the instance doesn’t want to pull i.e. veronicaexplains, it now have to block the entire tilvids.com instance. I don’t think that’s cool, is it unreasonable to believe a link that says “@tilvids.com” will open the tilvids.com page? Is that how links work on lemmy now, I haven’t been active for a few sub-versions.
To connect your domain to your IP use godaddy website, it should have a section where you can configure a dns entry, you can specify an IP address (your public IP) and, after a while, every device on the internet connecting to YOURDOMAIN.COM will be send to your home. If godaddy doesn’t offer a dns service you have to buy it somewhere else like on cloudflare, here I think you will need to prove that you own YOURDOMAIN.COM and then setup your IP in the dns. If you don’t have a static IP you need a DDNS (Dynamic DNS). After that you open the port number 443 on your home router so that https requests will be send to a device of your choice, this device will host your reverse proxy, the reverse proxy binds a domain name (the one you brought) or a sub domain to a service of you choice on your local network, doing this you don’t expose the local server directly and you need to open a single port only.
I bought a domain on namecheap.com and it has a configurable dns built in so I hope that godaddy has one too. I use Caddy as a reverse proxy for my jellyfin instance instead of Nginex, I think that they are both valid, another thing other people said in the comment is to access jellyfin via wireguard tunnel and I confirm that is the best choice if you don’t have specific needs, let me explain. The reverse proxy automatically generates ssl certificates using let’s encrypt allowing you to cast from an android phone to a Google chromecast (this seems to be the only way to do it and works very well for me). I also configured other services on caddy, in my setup I block every request to the reverse proxy that doesn’t arrive from inside my local network (except jellyfin so I can use it remotely), I know that it’s not the intended use of a reverse proxy but it makes some things possible that otherwise will need more configuration:
I have two separate networks in my home, my reverse proxy has a double interface so I can easily access all services from devices on the main network.
I don’t need to configure local dns rewrites to my services neither I have to add exceptions for dns rebind inside my router, I simply add a new rule to caddy and it just work.
I have https for every service on my network without annoying messages on the browser.
If you think this lazy use of the reverse proxy could be a problem please tell me your thoughts!
Maybe it’s an instance thing, maybe it’s a Boost thing, but when I search for communities with the simple term “fitness” for example, I only get 5 results that have like, 30 members max....
I have struggled with my alcoholism for some time and finally was able to get sober. I’d like to pay it forward and decided to start /c/sobriety for ANY drug/alcohol addiction for those currently or afflicted in the past and ready to nurture and guide newcomers to sober living....
Haha, thanks. Still getting versed in the new ways of the fediverse, was mistakenly thinking that subs were considered instances. I appreciate the heads up 👍
We already have something extremely similar, a bot instance that reposts content from subs that users request. It is incredibly useless in reality, and really spamming the shit out of my feed. The first user I blocked.
There is not much use in third hand content that suggests a discussion, while it isn’t being discussed here. Now don’t get me wrong, I’d love for reddit to up and die, but it isn’t happening yet if we are being realistic and won’t happen by artificially creating zombie repost content on Lemmy.
Id rather we had more content creators to provide valuable OC.
That all depends on what you’re interested in. I’m assuming you’ve come from reddit, so you could try sub.rehab to find new homes for your subs, although tbh I don’t know if it’s up to date or not - there have been some instances die so the communities had to move.
This was funnier on reddit where there could be only one “superbowl” sub and it was taken by enthusiasts of superb owls. It is less funny on a platform where “superbowl” on other instances can still be a community for Super Bowl fans.
I don’t know if this was asked before and I don’t know how to look for that so I’m sorry if this is a repeat but, I keep seeing American football posts which I couldn’t care less about and I keep blocking the communities but they’re like thousands of millions of communities that never end. And no, I don’t wanna stick...
Yeah I asked this question about foreign languages, and I think it was the same answer. I don’t speak or read German (as the most common example I’ve seen) so I have to keep blocking various instances that pop up in the newest feed like whack-a-mole. Similar to physical community-specific subs and sports; I just gotta keep blocking them one at a time
I know these aren’t the best photos, I’m no photographer, I’m just using my phone, and they didn’t bring any of the animals out, so they’re all being either 2 or 4 layers of protection. I hope you still enjoy them....
Glad you liked our bald headed bird friends! Yeah, they look a little different, but they are designed for a very important job! Everything about them is made for sanitation.
I’m glad you like my goofy titles. I’m trying to learn what gets the clicks without coming off too dorky or dumb.
I used to be more active on Beehaw and it was my favorite instance, but I feel their local post count has really fallen off, and what is that is angry politics stuff I can get anywhere. I did crosspost a the thing about Canada only having 1 spotted owl left since I felt that was something everyone should know, and I search some other instances that aren’t federated with World to see if anyone mentions they miss r/Superbowl and I stear them here and I politely spam threads when I can make it part of the conversation without being annoying. Maybe I’ll toss the vultures up on some other subs this weekend to get them some love when the most eyes will be on them and do a little cross promoting while I’m at it 😉
Thank you for the support, and I really appreciate hearing from all of you. I’m a person, not some owl spam bot, so I like hearing I’m helping you have a better day than if I wasn’t posting.
I really, really suspect that the big Lemmy instances are being run by Reddit admins or spooks or some-such. They’re moderating their instances in the exact same way Reddit did minus the profiteering. The censorship is the exact same.
It’s just the reality of online content moderation. The good mods/admins are people who are passionate about a topic and want to provide a space for discussion and community building. When it comes to the “power mods” or whatever, like those we saw on reddit who moderated 100+ subs, they’re just in it to stroke their own egos.
Well, since it seemed to be a way to support the site and get to see new features ahead of time, so yeah, why not? I only decided not to renew my gold access when it became very clear Spez wouldn't ban the hate subs he loved.
As for getting gold otherwise:
I'm an introvert, ok? I mostly only comment if I have something worthwhile to say.
So the only comments I ever got gilded by others were drunken shitpost. And in one instance some random off the cuff post. ...I don't get it.
Anyway. Basically, I didn't want to post any Gold Baits™. because that way lies madness.
I don’t use any social media except for Lemmy. It used to be only Reddit but jumped ship after the API changes. I’m enjoying Lemmy for the most part. Commenting is better because it gets more traction compared to Reddit. Unlike others I actually enjoy having all the varying opinions from “problem” instances. It makes it feel less like an echo chamber, which Reddit was bad for.
My only issue is because it’s so much smaller than Reddit, there isn’t as much content or niche communities. I miss some of the subs I used to frequent on Reddit. Some of them were made into communities here but barely have any activity, like one post per week. I guess at the end of the day it’s a good thing cause I spend less time on Lemmy than I used to on Reddit.
I wouldn’t call what reddit is doing “thriving”. The experience of what used to make Reddit, Reddit (the deep focused communities) is already quite decayed and has been decaying for some time.
Curate your Lemmy communities better and make an effort to interact as much as possible. Lemmy always feels super dead if you don’t actively look for new communities and instances to subscribe to, because the Fediverse is inherently in a changing state of flux of where the activity is. Lemmy does not auto populate your feed with a bunch of algorithm crap, you have to MAKE it show you what you want. I’ve built up a nice list of 40+ subbed communities and see lots of content.
Reddit also had the ability to just type in my address bar “/r/obscurefandom” and be taken directly to the subreddit for it. Lemmy doesn’t have those smaller subs yet and you have to hunt for the right instance if it does.
Is HEVC (8-bit)/AAC a good, modern CODEC combination for rebuilding & reducing my library size without compromising quality? Helpful feedback would be appreciated.
Yes, you’re completely correct. There’s something to consider though.
CPU encoding gives the best results possible, in terms of quality and size. Decoding, unless you have a very weak CPU, isn’t necessarily the bottleneck it most transcoding applications eg plex, jellyfin, etc.
So you can do things to make the media as streamable as possible for instance encoding your media in AV1 using the mp4 container rather than mkv. If you make it web optimized aka ATOM upfront it makes playing the file much easier and less resource intensive. Now when a client that can’t use AV1 requests it your transcode can do SW decode and HW encode. Not as efficient as pure HW but IMHO it’s a worthwhile trade off for the storage space you get in return.
You can make things more efficient by disabling subtitles and/or burnin on the media server side. If you have people like myself who need subs in everything then you can burn them in while you’re encoding the media to AV1 or only using formats like UTF8 so you can pass through them as m4v/mp4 doesn’t support subs like mkv does.
That’s essentially what the optimized versions do on Plex. Only it sticks with x264 rather than AV1.
If your media is only 720p then none of this would really make a difference for you. If you’re using 1080p+ rips then this will make a SIGNIFICANT difference. It’s made such a difference that I’ve started redoing my rips in 4K.
Unless that is you got a SAN in your closet and free electricity that is…

I was an Invidious user until I found out about Libretube, and the fact that on Libretube and even on a Piped website you can login to get your subs from other instances. That is crazy useful.

The difference is that this is federated and you can ignore any instance you like. With reddit, your only choice is to make a copycat sub and hope people join you.
I’m self-hosting a Piped server, and it’s working great. I was able to import my YT subs from a Google Takeout dump, and I continue to add more channel subs on the Piped server. So far, no YouTube ads, plus it uses SponsorBlock, so I can skip that content too.
For mobile client, LibreTube is working quite well for me. It talks to my Piped instance, so subs (but not watched history, unfortunately) are maintained on the server. I’m still looking for a Piped client for Chromecast GTV to complete the ensemble for me. Right now, I still use my YouTube account with SmartTube Next (which also avoids YT ads and uses SponsorBlock).
ive been using kodi (xbmc was better moniker) since google killed sagetv. i recall attempting plex, but it seemed to lack some open/extensibility (its been awhile)....
Because I paid for a lifetime sub like a decade ago and my parents and a few friends connect to my instance. I can’t be arsed to move myself and everybody else to a new system when this shit just works.
Are the moderators of individual communities not able to ban or defederate instances from their sub? I can see arguments either way but instance admins should be able to ban them.
The fact that the Lemmy devs are so far gone with weird politics is a really bad sign for adoption seeing as they’ll probably be banned from lemmy.ml and won’t be able to access the official support sub. If they see admins on subs like this, they’ll probably just ban them from their instance.
