RIP_Cheems, The school shutting that email down
MooseBoys, I’m in this meme and I’m kind of okay with it.
ChewTiger, When I was like 11 I made two emails, one with a dumb name and another more professional one that’s just my name. I didn’t want to send emails to adults with the dumb name one because I didn’t want to explain it.
11 year old me was way too serious.
pascal, Does anyone remember when marijuana.com allowed to create a free email?
Squid, I use it as an alt now
FordBeeblebrox, My first Hotmail address was based off my football position and jersey number. During high school I changed positions and numbers along the way, making it obsolete like a year after creating it
Still useful for signing up to things I know are gonna spam me with bullshit though, the ad copy can join old MySpace reminders.
Tankton, Ah, mister SafetySafety88 ?
alldreadme, Idk I have pretty normal usernames. Never had those dodgy cool ones, Ig I was boring all along
PersnickityPenguin, I made an alias so unique, that if you Google it you get my bloody home address and other doxxing information. Not good!
And worse, that’s literally all the I do Google spits out. There’s literally nothing else.
Martineski, I don’t believe you, prove it. :)
PersnickityPenguin, Haha, almost got me there!
Just Google “penguin,” I’m all over the interwebs. 😅
lazycouchpotato, I still keep my Hotmail/Yahoo/etc., but I’ve gotten my name as a domain and use that for professional communication.
It has catch-all support, so whether you send an email to [email protected] or “[email protected]”, I still receive it.
funkless_eck, I do the same. And if someone abuses a particular alias I block it.
Misconduct, Wait, so you can just willy-nilly name emails for your domain for different online services and see who’s selling your data pretty easily then right?
I mean… who isn’t selling our data but still lol
Flumsy, Exactly and then you can block that one addressband you dont get spam anymore. You can make the addresses up as you go btw, it will receive every email sent to your domain anywaya
Misconduct, That’s actually really cool! I’ve been actively degoogling this year but my email is one of the last holdouts so I’ll have to look into this
max, Another advantage of having your own domain for email is that you can just pack your shit and move to greener pastures when your current email provider turns to shit. No need to change your email everywhere.
Illecors, Yes! I’ve literally found out about a data leak this way before it was announced publicly.
Misconduct, That’s neat
berkersal, I just set that up. Pretty useful
BigT54, I find it incredibly annoying that Google won’t let you merge or transfer purchases to a new account.
Stamets, YES BITCH! I’m stuck using this ancient account I’d really rather not in order to access my purchases. Luckily most of the things I’ve bought are no longer available. However I did just buy premium for Boost for Lemmy… Fuck it. I’m buying it again.
Thank you for the reminder for me to switch over. I actually needed that.
Gloomy, I like how this was your reminder. I mean, you just made a thread about this very topic…
Stamets, I was born with the ability to post memes, not think about them. Thinking hard.
jackpot, wheres your profile banner from
Stamets, It’s a screengrab from Star Trek: Lower Decks although it can be found in any of the newer episodes of the new Trek shows. They’re using it as an opening across all shows. A ship (changes depending on the show) flies around in space. It then zooms out and you realize the path the ship was taking makes the Starfleet Delta. Then the Star Trek text drops over the top. Pretty neato intro actually.
Here’s the link to the Strange New Worlds one. Lower Decks shows the ship from that show, the Cerritos. Discovery shows the USS Discovery and the newest season of Picard shows the USS Titan-A. There’s even a new retro version for the ‘very Short Treks’ theyve been putting up on youtube.
Here’s the full pic if you want it.

ilinamorato, The retro/TAS version is pretty remarkable. I made a comparison between them, and they match amazingly well:

Edit: the animation maybe doesn’t work?

Stamets, Animation works on my end. They do match real close. I am super impressed with the detail they did for all the intros. There’s even little easter eggs imbedded in some of them. Picard Season 3 is mostly the same but occasionally something small changes and you see another ship in the background or special effects added to the main logo. Lower Decks has added a nebula that looks like a giant Koala into their intro.
ilinamorato, Yep, I love it. I kept trying to figure out the twist in PIC s3 based on when stuff changed. Never would’ve guessed what Geordi had been doing.
Stamets, Oh that took me off guard too. I actually cheered and started yelling when that slow reveal started becoming obvious.
Gestrid, While it’s not quite the same, Google does allow you to stay signed into multiple accounts. Just click your profile photo in the upper-right and click “Add another account”. After signing into the other account, you can seamlessly switch between them. The same steps can also be used for any Google Android app.
ipkpjersi, I got pretty lucky that 1) my usernames have all been pretty tame if a bit boring and 2) I never published anything horrible under my IRL name
alphapuggle, I publish all of my horrible stuff online under your real name just to fuck with you
ComradeChairmanKGB, It was me Barry
BambiDiego, Dick move other Barry
chiliedogg, When I was in college I got an early invite to Gmail, and did the fistname.lastname address.
All my day jobs have also had the same format, as does my university faculty ID (I teach night classes).
It’s kinda handy that you just use my (unique) name and the organization to get in touch with me.
Though it’s super annoying on my phone’s autocomplete since the screen above the keyboard shows “firstname.lastname@…” 3 times and I don’t know which is which.
ipkpjersi, (edited ) I do find that interesting all your jobs use the same name format. My jobs have all had different formats lol
One was first initial last name, one was last name first initial (same as my school), my current one is just first name which is cool because if there are any other people who come here later I will be the original one lol, etc
Also my second job had four people with the same name as me, but one of them was much older and died while I was still working there, then I left a year later so then they were down to two. lol
Potatos_are_not_friends, Bank: and your email is “TigOlBiddies69 @ email com?”
Me: “Yes is there a problem?”
Nurloc, Had my hotmail since the 90s…
Hobart_the_GoKart, I still use my Hotmail account. I created it 9/12/2001. The shock must have been so great that I needed to make my first email account. Why yes, the handle is related to Godsmack’s second album.
Mago, More like 8 yr old lol
EtherWhack, After 20-25 years, it’s more or less used for a spam pit and less important things now. No sense walking away from it when there’s no finances or other dangerous things attached
SexualPolytope, I have 689 in my email address that I use for most things. I only learned that it was a slang around a year ago.
Caboose12000, what’s it slang for?
SeekPie, Maybe six ate nine?
SexualPolytope, It’s like 69, but with rimjobs. Good thing is that it’s not widely used.
Traegs, My first was dingdong86@aol and then dudeguy2202@yahoo
Today I use something more professional, last name + my first and middle initials.
sicarius, Same, I made a more professional email address that was easier to tell people over the phone. I didn’t think at the time that my middle initials are A & T.
Now the confusion is I say my email addres is “firstname at lastname @ gmail.com”
