In the crafting world, these are called orts. And some people get super creative with them! I’ve seen them user to decorate cards, to make collage art, to fill little clear Christmas ornaments or felt animals, etc. I’ve been saving the ones from my current project because I want to take a picture of the finished cross stitch next to all its orts. It feels like a visual representation of “you can’t make omelet without breaking a few eggs”, you know?
They are terrible! I bought one box of these bad boys and never looked back. They are going to last me a lifetime at this rate because they only need to be replaced when I loose them and the box of 50 takes up no room.
My friend was working as a security guard in a sort of semi-public down town walkway in a major North American city. He’s doing his rounds when he starts smelling shit, like actual shit. Maybe someone popped a squat somewhere (there’s a lot of addiction in that area), so he starts looking around and eventually comes across a woman completely covered in shit, like head to toe. My bro’s so shocked he can’t think, all he can do is stare at her and growl. She just nods and starts walking out.
If only sex work had legal protections I wouldn’t have to tell you this story.
It can take a few tries. Sometimes you’ll exit a room to the east, but have to go north to get back. That’s not usually immediately obvious, and can mess up your maps.
Source: just played through Trinity for the first time since I was a kid.
My cousin and I tried making a map of the maze by dropping items in each room. We got some parts mapped out reliably, but it was still a long process that ended up with a few questionable paths
They’re just horrible in my experience. They’re mainly designed for pulling sewing thread through a sewing needle eye, not embroidery floss through an embroidery needle. The floss is just too thick, and it breaks the threader. They sell better ones, I’m told, but I just quit bothering with them after the first half dozen. Lol .
Honestly I’ve never gridded before so can’t help you there, but hopefully someone has some tips! Looks like a much less involved pattern this time round, that must be a nice break. My guess is some kind of llama pattern?
Anyway, I’m breaking with tradition today. No cross stitch whatever from me all week. BUT, in the spirit of Halloween I decided to face my great crafting fear, and am trying my first ever hand embroidery piece!
So far it’s a bit wonky and also my fingers really hurt, but I’m very proud of sticking with it! This is for a video so I’m not posting it anywhere else cos it’s secret. But you won’t tell anyone, right? 🤫
Oh wow this is beautiful! I should try embroidery too. It seems really practical and I want to customise my clothes. Looking forward to the video! That’s a nice teaser.
My guess is some kind of llama pattern?
It’s a really good guess. That’s an alpaca. I’m surprised people figured it out at this stage. It’s an adorable pattern that got me started with cross stitching…but I didn’t start it until now because I was intimidated by backstitching.
Woohoo! Nailed it! There’s a little toy alpaca in front of me now wearing one of those colourful blanket things, and I guess it was 50/50 alpaca/llama from there 😆
Please don’t feel like I’m shilling videos btw, it’s just often my only time for crafts in a given week overlaps with that stuff so it’s just naturally what I talk about. Anyway if you do try embroidery I can say, make sure your needle is big enough to pull all the strands through comfortably because OW MY FINGERS. That’s my #1 tip so far lol.
Thank you! I figured out the knack of sort of waggling the needle under each stitch to help them lay down flat, but actually getting them to go where I want to is still an exercise in frustration half the time. Just takes practice, I suppose!
That Wonder Woman is looking amazing! It’s not a race so take as long as you need for the Lasso. People work on WIPs for decades!
I managed to get a couple of hundred stitches this week. Prof. Carver is looking more like a human now. I’m on sick leave (nothing serious, just a cold) followed by a week of planned paid leave… so I’ll have free time to catch up!
My progress is slower than usual this week. I’ve been trying to crochet a pair of wrist warmers which held me back a bit… I spent two days and made a lot of mistakes only to realise I’m 10g short of the yarn…which is discontinued. So I had to frog the whole thing, start over, and improvise with a different colour from the exact same yarn, at least for the wrist part which is hidden. Fun times! At least I almost finished another Discworld audiobook.
Hope the cold clears off in time for you to enjoy the actual leave! And I agree he had a certain something when he looked like an eldritch being from The Beyond, but I suppose this is cool too. The shading in this whole pattern is really good I have to say.
Thank you! I’m working with about 45 colors and 15 blends! Got a good session done today so now I just have back stitch left. Hoping to finish this weekend and I’ll be sure to post the result.
It’s starting to take shape. You can already see something resembling legs. This week has been hectic and I haven’t had the chance to stitch much. I’ve been working on my backyard birding setup and that also took some of my free time. We also rescued a pigeon. I’ll probably stitch while keeping it company so progress might come faster.
That needle minder is hell on earth! Really fits the vampire theme.
Meet Domino. Disappointing pic but that’s the best my partner could take at twilight with an almost dead phone. I think it really likes my old pullover that I was intending on throwing away. Its wing is bruised/hurt and the leg is broken. Vet said it’s not going to make it in the wild with that leg but it might fly again. He said the best I could do is adopt it. The poor thing probably won’t fly outside without a leash and supervision though.
As much as I love cats, I hate it when owners let their cats roam outside. They prey on birds for sport, not for food. I know exactly whose cat did it, that’s why I’m salty. It’s not the first time he’s done that. Also I have a cat at home which might make things interesting. So far he’s shown curiosity but not predator behaviour as he does with other birds. Not going to risk it though!
Funny that you mention the two old magnets. My minder is a DIY from craft store magnets that are probably as good as your old ones. But that murderous cat brings me so much joy I had to make it. It works just barely but totally worth it.
The junk drawer magnets came from a broken knife sharpener, and they were way too strong. They were constantly leaving marks on the fabric and getting stuck to the scissors, and stuck to my bracelet lol
Wonder Woman was moving along pretty swiftly until I got to her hair, which is proving to be a bit more challenging than I would have thought, but I’m making good progress!
They are indeed terrible for embroidery. Unless you’re super careful and only using two strands, be prepared to probably break at least one per project. Industrial strength threaders, all the way! Also, great username, lol 😉
