frickineh,

My religious family gave up on the “you’re a sinner” lecture after I made it super clear that A) I don’t care and B) I’m not going to argue with them about it. If I got mad or tried to fight about it, they LOVED that shit, but being like, “yup!” and throwing some finger pistols their way and they don’t really have a response besides telling me to not sin. But they can only keep that up so long when you’re like, “oh no doubt, Uncle Fuckface.”

I mean, I also don’t talk to them anymore so that really solved the problem, but the cheerful agreement that I’m for sure going to hell got me through my teenage years/early 20s. Surprise, I didn’t get less queer even after all the lectures!

frickineh,

Most of them? Generics are frequently the same thing from the same manufacturer with cheaper packaging and no/very little marketing. There are very few things I’ve ever tried that were noticeably better in the name brand.

frickineh,

I don’t know that placebo is the right word (or if you just pulled that info out of your ass) but even if it was, if people consume the generic and just feel like it was the same, then who cares? It’s not like people are buying Kirkland chemotherapy, it’s some cookies or lotion or whatever, and our feelings about those things are totally subjective anyway.

frickineh,

I put a little butter on them sometimes and it’s delicious but everyone thinks I’m crazy until they try it. I wish I had some saltines right now.

frickineh,

What kind of pretzel? I feel like the sticks are way too tiny and even the knotted ones would be kind of a pain in the ass. I could get behind a big soft pretzel with butter though. That would be worth the effort.

frickineh,

Peanut butter is good too. That’s for when I feel like making marginally better choices, though (because then I can say, “Well it has protein?”)

frickineh,

The government does issue passports in people’s preferred gender. They got rid of the requirement to have any kind of medical documentation a few years ago. Maybe he’s trying to stop that, along with being a total fuckin douche in general.

frickineh,

Someone I know is a libertarian and when I asked how stuff like road maintenance would work on his ideal society, and he was like, “well everyone would pitch in to pay a company to do it.” Ok, so what if someone refuses, are there any mechanisms to penalize them? And who chooses the company and signs the contract and schedules the work? You guys gonna vote for people to do those things? Congrats, you just created government. He also had no real response to what happens if one neighborhood is full of good people willing to pitch in, and the next one says fuck it, we’re not doing any of that, so the roads are great for a mile and are undrivable the next mile.

So yeah, sounds a lot like what your parents are dealing with. Paradise!

frickineh,

A few years back, I found my old ThinkPad that I bought used in about 2000 and it still worked, homemade Hayden Christensen background and all. I was so upset by evidence of 16 year old me being horny for Anakin that I almost threw it against the wall, but it probably still would’ve worked.

frickineh,

Both of my parents are/were notorious for leaving roughly 655489357 tabs open at a time. I get stressed if I have more than a couple at a time. We’re boomers/a millennial, respectively. But it could also be a result of my severe anxiety. Who knows?

frickineh,

I have a decent amount of older family heirlooms, but the oldest thing that was only ever mine is probably my first passport. I was maybe 4 months old when I got it, and it definitely has the most/coolest stamps of all of the passports I’ve ever had. Of course I don’t remember any of it, but I keep it in the hopes that someday one of my adult books will measure up.

frickineh,

Are they though? He’s been pretty openly transphobic.

What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

I am super sick right now and haven’t eaten much in a few days. It’s getting to the point where I am gonna need to force myself to eat something to keep my strength up but everything just sounds terrible to me right now. I have been subsisting mostly on small glasses of milk and the occasional packet of instant oatmeal....

frickineh,

Oh yeah, rice with a little broth was a lifesaver the last time I was super sick. Drinking broth alone wasn’t cutting it, but the rice was still gentle enough that it didn’t make me want to die when I ate it.

frickineh,

God, he is so bad at the thing he’s chosen to do with his life. It’s honestly embarrassing.

frickineh,

He’s really not. Most political cartoonists at least try to keep their point simple and based in fact. Ben Garrison doesn’t care if he’s lying, and his point is usually so much of a reach that it’s impressive he didn’t hurt himself getting to it. Not to mention his love of way too much text. If you have to explain the “joke” that much, maybe rethink it.

frickineh,

The Colorado version is this plus pictures of themselves skiing/snowboarding (even if they really only go like once a year and especially if they just moved here a couple years ago).

frickineh,

I’m guessing the fact that no one could even talk about the movie until like 5 minutes ago didn’t help. I had no idea it was even coming out until a couple of days ago because the SAG strike kept everyone from doing press.

frickineh,

A decade or so ago? Yeah, totally, dating apps worked fine. Recently? No. Everyone wants to sell you something and they can’t do that if you actually meet someone, so it’s just constant “people totally like you, we swear, you just have to pay and we’ll show you who!” and bots. I got messages/intros (where it’s allowed pre-match) because I’m a woman and it’s borderline impossible not to if you have a pulse, but it was mostly from men who were way too old and/or people where the only thing we had in common was geography.

frickineh,

The thing with human mouths, though, is that they’re gross. A dagger will fuck you up, but a mouth may hurt at the time, and then later it’s ✨BACTERIA TIME✨. I think maybe they can get a little bonus for that.

frickineh,

I always wanted to pay $184k to tear down a house! How did they know?

Seriously, the realtor isn’t even trying. The description is hilarious. I guess when you have the love child of a cabin and a funhouse built in what looks like about 3 of the crappiest trailers in the park glued together haphazardly, there’s not much you can say to make it appealing.

Colorado funeral home owner, wife, arrested on charges linked to the handling of at least 190 bodies (apnews.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The owner of a Colorado funeral home and his wife were arrested Wednesday in Oklahoma on charges linked to the discovery of 190 sets of decaying remains at one of their facilities, including some that apparently had been languishing there for four years.

frickineh,

I initially gave them the benefit of the doubt before all the details came out, thinking maybe they just got behind and then things spiralled, but the full list of charges makes me think scammers or a ton of debt. Either way, it seems like this will be the push CO needs to finally start regulating the funeral industry like everyone else does.

frickineh,

My hands are so tired just looking at the moon. That’s impressive as heck. I haven’t really worked on anything this week. I made a tiny bit of progress on my skeleton hand last weekend but I’ve been so busy and tired with election week and working 1 job plus a little of a second. I really want to start something for Christmas soon, though.

frickineh,

Oh dang, I could tell there are 2 colors, but 4 is so impressive. It really does have great dimension.

frickineh,

I think some people, myself included, managed to stay stable, so that’s probably a big chunk of it. I got a new job in June 2020 that was enough of a raise to make up for inflation, so while I’m not ahead of where I was 3 years ago, I was at least in the same mediocre position I started in. That said, I’ve had $3k in dental bills since July because dental insurance is pretty much a scam, soooo I’m now officially fucked, but I was doing ok.

frickineh,

I said I’m not worse off, not that I’m doing well. Stable meant I was basically in the same position at the end of the pandemic as was at the start.

frickineh,

Are there enough of us here to give them the attention/drama they clearly crave?

frickineh,

Nail clippers. I’m prone to hangnails, so it saves me a lot of pain keeping them handy, but they’re also good for cutting small things in a pinch (tags, loose threads, etc). I keep lots of pretty standard stuff in my bag/car, but the nail clippers get used the most for sure.

frickineh,

I work in local government and my boss would lose her everloving shit if anyone suggested something like this. Buuut I’m also pretty sure no one outside of my office (which, to be fair, handles the elections) ever stops to think, “hey could this be construed as encouraging people to vote some type of way?” So basically, this could, and probably is, a way to not-so-subtly buy votes, but it could also be people in charge not using their goddamn heads for one fucking second to think about the optics.

I…need a vacation.

frickineh,

Oh yeah, I would be 0% surprised, especially given the letter with it. Youngkin is a piece of shit. It’s just that there are also a surprising number of things like this that are suggested with zero sense of how it would play that get stopped behind the scenes because some of the people behind the scenes try not to be pieces of shit.

frickineh,

Lol just $1000 extra a month. I agree that no, those people aren’t ultra wealthy, but let’s not act like that much a month isn’t a completely unobtainable amount for many, many people, especially when rent is eating up 50% of people’s paychecks to start with.

frickineh,

I’m not and probably never will be a homeowner, but I wasn’t talking about the topic of the article, just laughing at the idea that someone could say just save an extra 1k a month for a decade like that’s an easy thing to do.

frickineh,

I think if the sex scenes were done well, that’d be one thing (still wouldn’t interest me, but I can see how they’d speak to others), but most of it is so bad. I finally watched Bridgerton a couple weeks ago and I can’t figure out why people were so horny for 30 seconds of some dude jackhammering away in the missionary position. Like why is it even necessary to show that mediocrity? Just skip it and add a little more plot.

frickineh,

He said, “It’s MUUURDAAA. Also, while Hamas is a terrorist organization and their attack should absolutely be condemned, Israel’s response is disproportionate and they’ve all but admitted to war crimes, so that’s not great.”

frickineh,

Wait shit, I can’t tell if you’re joking. In case you’re not, Ja hasn’t actually commented on Israel/Palestine that I know of. Much like the Lorax speaks for the trees, I speak for Ja Rule.

frickineh,

You’re right, this is from the one in Larkspur.

How crucial texting is to modern dating

I am 23 and I am currently in the dating scene. I’ve had no success and I’ve had the fourth person lose all interest in between setting up the date and the long wait between the date. It typically goes match on dating site, set up date, try to get to know each other over snap and then interest lost. I do tend to respond...

frickineh,

I just tell people upfront that I’m not the person for them if they want someone who wants to talk constantly, especially via text. I don’t have the energy for it, especially with my current job being so social, and I know I need someone equally independent for there to be any chance of a relationship. Other people like that exist - my ex and I used to spend a ton of time in the same room, gaming or watching movies or whatever, and we’d only talk occasionally. We were content to be with each other but doing our own thing. We didn’t work out for other reasons, but that part was always good.

Anyway, I think it’s helpful to weed out people ahead of time. Not in a negative way, because a shitty attitude will ruin your chances with most people, but just in the way of, “this is my communication style, looking for someone compatible with that.”

frickineh,

I suspect a lot of people will, it’s just been an issue of supply - nextdoor has been full of posts from people saying they went to nearby pharmacies and no one had it. Kaiser was doing it by appointment to make sure they had enough, but they just called me this week to say I can do a walk-in now. My appointment is Friday, so no real sense changing it, but it’s nice that it’s more accessible.

frickineh,

Progressives routinely vote in ways that conservatives would consider against our interests. Fot example, I don’t have kids and never will, but I always vote for policies that will improve schools, pay teachers more, etc, even though technically I’m spending money on something that doesn’t benefit me directly. It’s just that progressives see that we all benefit from having a healthy, happy, well-educated population, while conservatives only care if they (or maybe a handful of family/friends) benefit and don’t care about anyone outside of that circle, particularly.

frickineh,

This is really good! I never would’ve guessed it was your first time. Satin stitch can be a real pain and yours looks really nice.

frickineh,

Are you trying to infringe on my right to get my brains eaten by a zombie?? That sounds like commie talk to me. This is America, and if I want to become one of the undead, you can’t stop me!

frickineh,

My guy, the shitholes where I live sell for $100k minimum, and come with several hundred a month in lot rent, because they’re trailers. A shitty condo is $200k or more, plus, again, a few hundred a month in association fees. I could move somewhere with a lower cost of living but I’d easily take a 50% paycut, so I’d be in the same situation. It’s not about not being willing to live in crappy places, it’s about even the crappy places being well outside of what nearly everyone can afford without a mortgage.

frickineh,
frickineh,

My point is that you can’t just buy a house without credit these days. There are no homes at cash prices, at least not the kind of cash most of us have or could get in any reasonable amount of time. JuSt BuY a UsEd PhOnE (and also wait for a massive recession)! So easy!

frickineh,

Huh, his art is technically fine, but I’ve seen photorealism done better (and really, it tends to be one of the most boring genres of art imo, because it’s usually more focused on accuracy than on any kind of meaning or feeling). I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about him if I ever came across his work, but now my impression is that he’s not particularly likeable in addition to being a pretty mediocre artist. Especially since the original review was very fair - maybe nicer than he deserved. That chicken hand was rough.

frickineh,

Oh my gosh, I never played that particular game, but I totally get the old floppy disk game vibes. I want to start clicking around the scene looking for things every time I see it.

frickineh,

Oh well, if she’s a realtor, I guess she couldn’t possibly also be a nazi. So glad she cleared that up.

frickineh, (edited )

I’ve finished a couple of things recently, and now I’m sort of on pause until after Halloween because I have roughly 87 more hours of hand sewing to do for my stupid costume. I never did move the s in fuckers because I realized I’d have to unstitch about half the word and I just…wasn’t gonna do that. The second thing is based on the last 2 panels of this comic that someone posted and I said, “oh I have to do it!” I did realize after taking the picture that I never finished the eye, so I’ll have to do that, but I think the rest is done.

frickineh,

I sort of figured it wasn’t noticeable enough to bother, especially since the only people seeing it in person will be me and my mom.
