Deemo, to technology in Amazon is now automatically playing fullscreen video ads on Fire TV

I have a fire tv cube just direct launch into apps to avoid this. For example instead of powering on the fire tv with power button I tell Alexa to open the app I need.

Down side is this doesn’t really work with sieloaded apps like smart tube

soggy_kitty,

Sounds like this can be better avoided by not having an fire TV cube at all

abbadon420, to technology in Amazon is now automatically playing fullscreen video ads on Fire TV

Isn’t a firestick basically a chromecast? I mean, google is a shitty company in matters about privacy or ethics, but amazon isn’t much better

passepartout,

They have been built onto android until now, but i read that they wanted to ditch that and make their own os from scratch

Blackout,
@Blackout@kbin.social avatar

I can cast to my internet-disabled TV anything to it, including pirate streaming sites with no ads. 20 years ago I ran a hdmi from my desktop and used a wireless touchpad to load downloaded stuff. It truly is the golden age of piracy

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

They're more like AndroidTV boxes with a full menu and HDMI-CEC support, only they came out back in the day when Chromecasts were just for casting. They were also dirt cheap; unfortunately that's because they were made with bargain-basement parts which often failed or started to overheat easily a few months in.

Skimmer,

Yeah, Chromecasts are much better than Fire TV’s, due to the more control you have over them and how easy it is change the launcher vs. Amazon actively preventing it. Basically same price and budget as well. Plus Google running a newer version of Android in general vs. Amazon’s, etc. Chromecasts are probably lesser of the two evils imo.

So… this leaves Apple as the only mainstream media device vendor not forcing home screen ads (unless you swap the launcher on a Google TV)…?

Roku

Aatube,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

Indeed, though it still doesn't have a web browser.

snowe,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Roku has tons of Home Screen ads what are you talking about? It was so bad I spent about 5 minutes using it until I went and bought an Apple TV.

MagicShel,

Are you talking about the static city scape that scrolls while occasionally showing still ads every once in a while? That doesn’t feel like the same thing at all. Of course I haven’t used my Roku since I hooked up a PS5 so maybe they’ve made it worse.

ripcord,
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

We were talking about Fullscreen are that you have to skip or watch, which they don't have (at least not for me)

There's some ad on the home screen I agree I don't want but it's nowhere near as annoying as on Android TV or FireTV. Mostly it just stays out of my way and lets me do things, and that's it.

Drusas,

Until recently, yeah. Recently, my Roku TV is forcing me to interact with an ad (express interest or disinterest) before I can even launch an app.

bandario,
@bandario@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That sounds like something that should be illegal. You bought the screen. It belongs to you.

Can you root the TV and be rid of that horrible functionality?

Drusas,

Dunno, I'm too lazy.

ripcord,
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

I have a bunch of Rokus and never seen that. That sucks

Drusas,

Hopefully it's some sort of A/B testing that you'll never see.

nicetriangle,
@nicetriangle@kbin.social avatar

I'm sitting here watching Nvidia Shield, Amazon, and Windows, etc all cram ads into their shit and really reaaally hoping Apple doesn't break on this one.

ultra,

Doesn’t its home screen hover on the Music app by default, which shows nearly-fullscreen banners that are almost ads?

I don’t have one, but in every Apple TV from my school, that’s how it starts up

cosmic_slate,
@cosmic_slate@dmv.social avatar

I’ve shuffled mine around so I have folders on my home row, it just shows static tiles of the apps

bdonvr,

The top banner shows content from whatever app you hover over. You can rearrange your apps.

And I don’t use Music on mine much but I’m pretty sure it just shows your own content?

snowe,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

It shows content from whatever app you have highlighted. If you were recently watching Love is Blind on Netflix and you hover over Netflix it will show a love is blind banner. If you were watching pirated stuff from your home server on Infuse then hovering over infuse will show you the most recent thing you opened. They’re not ads, it’s just a “recent” list.

Skimmer,

Pretty much unfortunately. The good thing is its trivially easy to change launchers on the NVIDIA Shield or Google TV devices, plus you can even go a step forward and debloat them entirely with ADB. Amazon’s really the only manufacturer I’d say that forces home screen ads with no choice around it, since they actively prevent changing launchers and such. But Apple is probably the only one out of the box with no advertising.

dangblingus, to android in Don't waste your money on an awful Android tablet on Black Friday

Or, don’t waste your money on any kind of tablet ever. What do you actually need a tablet for?

evranch,

A cheap tablet makes for a cheap HMI display, literally a fraction of the cost of alternatives.

“MQTT Dash” makes a great interface to any protocol that you can translate into MQTT (i.e. almost anything at this point) and it’s free and robust.

dangblingus,

This is true, it would make a great HMI. I just get my employer to buy all of our equipment though.

Frederic,

I still have my Nexus 7 (2013), installed lineage on it. The tablet is used for Netflix, Disney, some games, etc

anonymous_bot,

So you can have a portable device with a larger screen than your phone? For general media consumption?

rocky linux tablet when

jcarax,

us.starlabs.systems/pages/starlite

Rocky isn’t one of the distros you can get preloaded, but it’s probably fairly trivial.

gnygnygny,

Yeahhhh ! But the price… PS : I don’t bought ever a Samsung pricing is too high… I got a Lenovo it works fine except the crappy battery

jcarax,

People keep saying this, but it’s pretty reasonable as far as tablets go. Its base is 16GB and 512GB, and it MSRPs for $713 USD with a sale to $655 for quite awhile now (though out of stock). The Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ with 12GB and 256GB is $700 on sale for $650. Considering the nature of the OS, maybe the standard FE is more equivalent with 8GB and 256GB at $520 on sale for $470. But you still have half the storage, and the Starlite is upgradable with standard M.2 NVME drive.

Even then, you’re getting a full Linux OS if that’s what you’re after. That’s a very niche market right now, to get a fully Linux capable tablet, much less one where the manufacturer supports and encourages it. Hell, it uses coreboot firmware. Considering the niche market, I’d say that’s a pretty damned good price. But if you don’t want full Linux support, and are happier with AOSP or Google’s Android, you can get a Pixel tablet for $400, or $500 with 256GB.

Sure you can get tablets for significantly less, like the Fire stuff from Amazon and a last-gen, base model iPad. But all of those have severe disadvantages as far as software and/or privacy. The N200 CPU in the Starlite isn’t going to set any records, but the ability to run full fat Linux puts it in a segment with the Surface and other Windows tablets. That’s something that the iPad Pro can’t even compete with, despite Apple fans begging for MacOS on those models for years.

eleitl, to technology in Amazon is now automatically playing fullscreen video ads on Fire TV

Which is why I just bought an nVidia Shield Pro. Custom launcher coming tomorrow. Time to start torrenting again.

gitlab.com/flauncher/flauncher probably. Not sure yet, but has to be FLOSS.

“They might not have the Google Play Store, or might be loaded up with bloatware apps that you can’t remove” That sounds pretty much like Google app’s to me🤔

ferralcat,

I mean, ipads are pretty bloated with shitty version of things on launch too. Basically my first week with them is always trying apples apps and then realizing they’re awful and downloading something else.

Mio, to android in LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5 million Android devices

How do I get one with it preinstalled?

emli42,

Put simply, you don’t. If your phone is supported and the documentation is there, the installation is a breeze.

Mio,

No. If it was easy to install then there would be a installation guide on the phone. Not even a installation program available on the computer to assist.

emli42,

This is 100% unofficial. Phone makers don’t want you to install third party roms (they cease having any control, won’t receive analytics, can’t push ads etc). Why should they help you out? They’ll do the bare minimum (or less) that is required for you, the owner, to be able to use third party roms.

Mio,

That is sad

zorbse,

There is OpenAndroidInstaller which looks great, but is still in Beta so I’m not sure if I would use it.

kzhe,

Buy one from someone who does the installing on sites like Ebay

Dudewitbow, to android in Don't waste your money on an awful Android tablet on Black Friday

I had bought a P11 Pro Gen 2 because I wanted an Oled tablet for reading, and outside of buying a very old Samsung S5e, it’s basically the cheapest option for oled along with its Chinese counterpart (Xiaoxin Pad Pro). Samsung Oled tablets are all of the # Plus tablets, which usually retail for more than the p11 pro gen 2.

Stylus2650,

I actually use a Samsung tab S5e and am considering upgrading. How is the P11 Pro Gen 2?

Dudewitbow,

i bought it on wednesday, so I wouldn’t even be able to give you a fair assessment. hasn’t even arrived yet.

Stylus2650,

Ah ok. Well congrats on your new purchase! Whenever you feel you’ve got a good handle on it, would love your thoughts.

    Don’t buy cheap tablets, they’re never worth your time. Shop fleaBay for a Samsung Tab S6, S7 or S8 depending on your budget instead - you’ll be much happier with the outcome.

    I’m still using my 2019 Tab S6 for Netflix, Reddit, PDF reading and annotation, comics and occasionally ebooks via KOReader. Great device, absolutely worth the ~$400 I spent on it on fleaBay ~3-4y ago.

    If AMOLED is a must for you the Tab S6, Tab S7 Plus, Tab S8 Plus or Ultra and any Tab S9 model are where you want to start. I’ll replace my Tab S6 when the 11in Tab S9 drops below ~$400 secondhand.

    akrot,

    In 2017 I got myself a lenovo tab 8", Android 6, 3GB of RAM for less than 120€. Thanks to AOSP, I got it on Android 10, and it’s still kicking 6 years later. Get tablets that you can own! (ie Unlock bootloader).

    mnmalst,

    I have the same as a secondary device. It’s getting slow tho. :)

    emli42,

    I wish LineageOS would support more tablets. I’ve got it running on an old OnePlus 6 I use as a Plex client and not much more and it just works, and I get all of the latest security updates etc. I know there are other ROMs out there, but none of the big ones support semi-modern tablets.

    knobbysideup,

    I needed a “tv” for my camper van. Cheap Lenovo M10 works fine in that role, mostly as a Plex client. The big complaint is I can’t get rid of their stupid app bar and can’t find a custom ROM. But for what it does and what I paid, it’s fine.
