xtr0n,

Try to be nice; always be kind.

xtr0n,

Thanks for bringing the real quote 😊

xtr0n,

I used to stick to that rule and get a sensible mid sized Toyota Corolla or Honda Accord that’s a few years old as needed. But in 2013 (the last time I needed to get a new car) the cost savings were really low compared to new. I think the used market was particularly hot so you’d save less that 10% of the cost, so I ended up getting my 1st and only (so far) brand new car ever.

xtr0n,

Most people don’t want this. Most people are one paycheck or emergency away from financial ruin. There is no social safety net and most workers have long hours, long commutes and not enough days off. No one can get off of the treadmill because they’ll end up homeless, starving or unable to get needed medical care.

xtr0n,

Things have generally gotten better for me over time. My childhood and adolescence were pretty rough and I’ve felt better since I’ve had more control and autonomy. I’ve also gotten treatment for depression which made a huge difference in my life. There are still low points. Right now I’m feeling down because work is overwhelming, but I’ll get through it.

It sounds like you’re at a point where you could use some help getting past the suicidal ideation. That’s a very dangerous mental and emotional state. You mentioned therapy. Do you still have a therapist? Can you have a very open and frank discussion about what you posted here? If not, are there other resources available where you live? Things can get better and you deserve to have an enjoyable and fulfilling life. I sincerely hope you get support to help you through these rough times so you can build the kind of life that you want and have hope for the future.

xtr0n,

This is so nice. Such a cool pattern and really neat work

xtr0n,

The fuck is a “marsh fire”? Aren’t marshes supposed to be wet? How TF does a fucking marsh catch on fire?

xtr0n,

It’s cool that you were able to improve your situation with a lot of luck, hard work and sacrifice but a basic middle class existence shouldn’t require a lot of luck.

xtr0n,

2 or 3 of the most popular religions on earth have holy sites there, so that’s not an insignificant source of tourism.

People who have been through tough timew, how did you keep moving?

I’m a week late on rent due, I only paid half, I had to call all my credit card companies and utilities to tell them what’s going on. And now my check engine light turned on because the bastard is misfiring. My wife lost her dad which fucked us both up due to missing a ton of work, and I don’t know what to do. I’m tired...

xtr0n,

Sounds like you’re doing everything you can. It sucks that you’re going through this; I hope the situation improves and you don’t get furloughed.

I’m guessing that if you could get to all your jobs without the car, you would have already done so? Saving on gas and insurance can help, but depending on where you live that might not be realistic.

You could try contacting local food banks and see if they ever make accommodations for people who are working during operating hours. They might not but there’s no harm in asking.

Right now you’re in a serious hole from missing work for a family emergency. I don’t have much advice for getting back onto steady ground aside from being super crazy frugal and working extra hours in the short term (which is fucking exhausting mentally and emotionally and physically). Do you have any long term plans for having more breathing room years from now? If your steady state is “one car repair or illness away from defaulting on payments” then that’s a hard path. Do you or your wife have prospects for better paying jobs in the future? Are there training or educational opportunities that could help? Are there cheaper places you could live (smaller, worse neighborhood?) to save money while working towards better job prospects? Living on not enough money in crappy circumstances sucks but it is definitely more bearable if you know it’s temporary and you’re making progress towards something better.

Good luck.

xtr0n,

Meditation can help. Therapy can help. Doing something engaging to distract yourself can help (ideally something that isn’t gonna make you feel worse in the end, playing with a pet or listening to music > binging on junk food or booze)

Remember that you can’t control whether crappy things happen but you choose how you react to them. (Of course, easier said than done)

xtr0n,

All you have to do is guide your mind back to focusing on whatever meditation you’re doing with an endless kindness and compassion that you would have for like some adorable puppy or baby that’s trying to wander away. They don’t mean to do wrong, but they also can’t be reasoned with. you just have to guide them back to the right place.

100%! Acknowledge the thought and then let it go. It isn’t about perfect execution. The benefits come from trying. Although, it can get easier with practice.

And even if what I’m doing is not “real” meditation, whatever it is, it’s an extended moment of niceness.

FWIW I took a multi week class on meditation with a licensed psychologist (who trained with the folks who wrote a very popular book on meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy) and what you’re saying sounds a lot like what we were taught. There may not be a single arbiter of meditation authenticity, but your practice sounds legit to me.

xtr0n,

Yeah, we’re all different and there’s no one size fits all. I find meditation helpful, when I remember to actually do it, but I hate running with the white hot hatred of a thousand suns. :)

I find that meditation does get easier with practice. I’ve been told that running also gets easier with practice but even when I was a pretty healthy and HWP teenager, every single week of cross country was as miserable as the last.

xtr0n,

And is that amount of money enough to replace the item that’s been taken away? Like if the DVD were widely available at the same price at the time of the digital purchase, but you got the Amazon “purchase” instead (for convenience?) then what are the odds that you can still get the DVD for that price today?

xtr0n,

Growing up in New England we called them “egg with a hat”

xtr0n,

The senate is pretty bad too.

In theory we could expand the number of house seats so that more populous states get more reps and everyone has a more equal number of voters per congressperson. I think that would not only help make the house more fair but would also make the electoral college more fair (since the # of electors increases with the number of house members). Not as good as the popular vote, but it’s an improvement that doesn’t require a conditional amendment.

xtr0n,

Dude has zero clue what the word “joke” means. Since when has making completely fucked up statements with no comic structure or punchline ever been considered a joke?

Although, to be fair, more often than not, Trump is completely serious and not claiming that he’s joking. It’s his handlers that lean the most on the “iTs OnLY a jOKe” bullshit

Danny Masterson's wife, Bijou Phillips, files for divorce following actor's sentencing for rape convictions (www.cbsnews.com)

Bijou Phillips, the wife of Danny Masterson, has filed for divorce following the “That '70s Show” actor’s sentencing of 30 years to life after he was convicted of raping two women, Phillips’ lawyer confirmed to CBS News....

xtr0n,

Assuming that she didn’t know about his behavior (and didn’t want to believe the rumors and accusations), she wouldn’t want to divorce him until the accusations became too big/real/loud to ignore. Yeah, it’s shitty to avoid the truth for decades, but when it’s your spouse, parent or kid, I can see how it would be really hard to face reality.

And once she couldn’t ignore it anymore, he was probably close to getting indicted or having a trial. At that point, I could see holding off on a divorce until the conclusion, just to give the father of your child the best chance at not sitting in jail for the rest of their life. Filing for divorce at the wrong time makes the accused look more guilty and less redeemable.

xtr0n,

To me it seems especially grim because the owner was well enough to drive themselves to the hospital, park and get themselves inside and were never well enough to leave (except in a bodybag or maybe a hospital transport to a hospice).

Whole Foods argues it can ban BLM masks because the Supreme Court let a Christian business owner refuse same-sex couples (fortune.com)

Amazon.com’s Whole Foods Market doesn’t want to be forced to let workers wear “Black Lives Matter” masks and is pointing to the recent US Supreme Court ruling permitting a business owner to refuse services to same-sex couples to get federal regulators to back off....

xtr0n,

I’m mad at both. Amazon is trash. The current court is trash. And all the ghouls that got us this shit ass court are trash, from Mcconnell to Trump to every dummy that votes for Trump to the stupid stupid Democrats who didn’t fight tooth and nail when Obama’s pick didn’t get a hearing and didn’t pack the courts at the 1st opportunity. Oh and fuck RGB who should have fucking retired at the start of Obama’s 1st term. Octogenarians who survived multiple bouts of cancer don’t have the luxury of hanging out so the 1st female president gets to appoint their successor. Democrats are so fucking inept it’s hard to believe that they aren’t sandbagging us on purpose

xtr0n,

If no one is allowed to wear any flair then that’s fair. But everyone is allowed (and possibly encouraged?) to wear pride stuff in June as part of the anyway corporate rainbow-washing. So I have to ask why it’s OK to wear “LGBTQ+ folks deserve life and civil rights” stuff but it’s not OK to wear “Black folks deserve life and civil rights” stuff? Why is stating that Black lives have value so offensive that it’s worth fighting all the way to the Supreme Court to ban it?

xtr0n,

Jumping between Mac and Windows I keep accidentally awakening Cortana when I try to copy and paste. Now that god awful, universally reviled feature if finally getting deprecated but it still brings up the damn window/modal/pice-of-shit just to tell me that it’s gone. If you want to be gone, then go! Don’t make a fuss telling me about it. Just go. No one wanted you in the 1st place. Fuck.

xtr0n,

There are some web apps that only support chrome on windows (or chrome and edge). An app from my doctor’s office refused to run on FF for a while. Thankfully it now has a “try running on unsupported browser “ link so I’m not blocked. (Let’s not get into why I’m running windows)

xtr0n,

Good luck with the sinus infection. That shit suuuucks. Drink lots of water and rest.

xtr0n,

If you use a neti pot or bottle, use two salt packets. The extra salty saline helps draw water out of your nasal tissue which helps with swelling

xtr0n,

And what URL do we use to view X? Oh, is it still twitter.com? Musk is a fucking clown.

xtr0n,

For me, just redirects to Twitter.com

xtr0n,

It might not be directly related to the event but this particular parade has had multiple shootings in the past. My family stopped going decades ago after my dad and little sister had to run from some asshole who was firing into a crowd. My whole thought process seeing the headline

News: “7 shot in Boston…” Me: “Oh no!” News: “At Caribbean Day parade” Me: “Oh, that tracks”

xtr0n,

If all the places with forests become desert, what are we supposed to breathe while we wait for trees to grow in the new green regions? How exactly is global food production supposed to make an efficient and orderly transition to completely different continents? Is 90% of the world’s population supposed just pick up and move to the yet to be built futuristic cities in different countries?

This is some fairy tale magical bullshit thinking. This looks like almost everyone in the yellow regions die (exceptions are those wealthy and politically connected enough or lucky and useful enough to be taken into a green region). There will be wars over food, water and habitable land. The global refugee crisis will be unfathomable. What happens when hundreds of millions or even billions of people need to get into a neighboring country to live? What if those people are in a country with a sophisticated modern military and are a nuclear power? Dude. We are so fucked.

xtr0n,

Cool. I’ll be able to breathe during the water wars :) Do you happen to know if we would still get good oceanic photosynthesis levels with increased ocean temperature and decreased ocean ph levels?

xtr0n,

Not the main character but Gus Fring was a remarkably intelligent gangster.

xtr0n,

I only do tinctures and mints now. Nothing that I could ever find yummy. Too many “surely one little bite of that rice crispy treat won’t get me high” or “another piece of that chocolate won’t get me too high “.

xtr0n,

Why? Because no one ever gets promoted by saying “leave it alone, users like it the way it is”.

xtr0n,

That isn’t true. McDonalds sells tons of french fries and they rarely change (and when they do change, they take great pains to make the change undetectable)

xtr0n,

Buttons can move but designers need to weigh the benefits of moving the button against the time and frustration users will experience from the move

Fox Cites First Amendment In Urging FCC To Renew Broadcast License In Face Of Challenge Over Coverage Of Donald Trump’s False Election Claims (deadline.com)

Fox says that the First Amendment limits the FCC from considering whether its news coverage of Donald Trump’s false election claims should play a role in the license renewal of its Philadelph…

xtr0n,

This is actually for a FOX affiliate station not FOX News. I don’t know if there is any relationship between local news on FOX stations and FOX News. I thought that they were supposed to completely separate entities so we can all watch The Simpsons without feeling like we’re supporting Tucker Carlson. But maybe that isn’t true?

Over the air stations are using a limited public resource (slices of the spectrum for the HDTV or radio) so the FCC governs who gets what slices so that we don’t have a noisy mess as competing channels try to broadcast over one another. One of the conditions of a broadcast license is to provide some public good with support for emergency announcements, PSAs and news. So the FCC should have some say in whether the thing you’re doing to meet the “provide news” requirement is actually news.

It’s kinda like, if you want a driver’s license to drive nuclear waste, they may require you to take classes on truck driving and materials safety in order to get and maintain your license. You have the right to drive a bicycle with a box of books wherever you want with no license, but if you want to drive a big rig on public roads with hazardous materials, you need some very specific licenses. And you can’t just say your buddy Jim taught you what you need in his garage last weekend. The licensing body absolutely has the right to say that your buddy popping off on a rant does not meet the qualifications of the required classes.

But with the current Supreme Court, who knows? They could say that the FCC isn’t allowed to make value judgments on “what is news?”. If so, things may get weird. Would they still be allowed to determine “what is obscene?” or would we start getting 24-7 porn on the over the air stations? Would they still be able to require news programs? And if not, what stations would still show news? Would reruns of Three and a Half Men bring in more money than local news? If so, maybe the only stations that would still bother would be ones with owners that want to broadcast specific kinda of news regardless of profit?

xtr0n,

I’m in the US and was planning on bugging out to the EU if shit gets worse here. So I guess I need a new plan B as well. But if the US and a large part of the EU go full fash, will anywhere be safe?

xtr0n,

Becoming a billionaire requires winning so many dice rolls that it’s difficult (impossible?) to really understand that you can lose sometimes.

xtr0n,

Yeah. Anything over 2 hours, I’s rather watch it at home so I don’t have to sprint to the bathroom and miss part of the movie.
