hanukkiah and menorah, Mandela Effect? (www.myjewishlearning.com)

I’m 62 years old and I just heard about the Hanukkiah for the first time tonight on puppy dog pals. What the heck? How can I live my entire life and never have heard of this. I’ve been around plenty of Jewish people and we talked about Hanukkah plenty of times. I’ve known about the menorah. I’ve known about the dreidel....

Did a search. After reading a few articles, I think I can summarize it like this:

Menora means lamp, and is usually 7 candles. Hannukah menora is a lamp for hannukah and has 9 candles. It is usually called a hannukiah, but that’s hard for non-Hebrew speakers to say, so we usually hear menora or hannukah menora.

Edit: forgot to include the sources. I’ll try to find them all, but here’s the one that, though the shortest, said the most.

Edit: found two more of the sources (1, 2), but can’t refind the longest one. Sometimes, it’s very annoying not having history saved.

I’ve never heard of hannukiah menora, either. I’ve either heard, menora (most common), hannukah menora (least common), or hannukiah (only heard in specific situations).

Any Advice? Ubuntu on Panasonic Toughbook. (lemmy.world)

Hi everyone, Linux noob. I am installing Ubuntu on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-33. I was wondering if anyone had advice regarding drivers as the toughbooks have quite a few I/O ports, dual cameras, cellular antennas, and attached keyboard etc. Any advice is appreciated or even resources on where I could go to learn more about...

Run a live version, and see if everything works. Generally speaking, the TBs aren’t made for consumer Linux. Even Windows kind of works with it, but the drivers are spotty. Search for a CF-33 with Linux from factory, and install that version, if that even exists. The TBs are laptops for a very specific use-case, and support for them on the consumer market is lacking. Good luck, though!

Edit: quick search found this for CF-33 but is not Ubuntu specifically, and this specifically for CF-31 but it may still be helpful.

I’ve done antiX on the CF-30, but the touchscreen wasn’t working. I didn’t really use it in the first place, but it was still a bummer. To be fair, the touchscreen barely worked on its original WinXP with OEM drivers built specifically for it. Good luck! I really hope you get all the needed hardware running!

Nice!!! I’m so glad you got all the important hardware working! I have a CF-54 (I think) that I got from a random auction with Win10. I never tried to install Linux on it, because of the failure of the CF-30 at work, but in light of your success, I may just give it a go.

YouTube screwing itself with adblockers again

I use Firefox and uBlock Origin. Not sure what kind of experience anyone else is having with YouTube, but recently my home page has been empty because I “don’t have watch history turned on”. Okay, fine. I won’t be able to browse suggested videos, and I’ll spend less time on their platform....

Linretube only works for me about 50% of the time. I tend to default to NewPipe because of this. Both are great, when they work, though. FreeTube for desktop is amazing. The ONLY thing I don’t like it about it, is that download progress isn’t shown (they’re working on that, I think).

I take out a pad and pen, “what’s your bank credentials? Also, your [social media] credentials? I won’t use it against you. Promise. … No? It’s not about us. It’s about the rest of the world, a large portion of whom uses M365. These blocks mean we can’t communicate with potential employers, family, government institutions, universities, etc.

Here I am, maintaining several block lists (max of 500 entries per list) on our M365 tenant of spam and phishing domains and addresses, and not a one comes from Tuta, Proton, or any other privacy provider. Nearly all are gmail, outlook, and icloud, with a few customs sprinkled in. Their claim that it’s to fight spam is BS.

Made the switch to KDE

I’ve been using Fedora for a couple of months now, and have been loving it. Very soon after I jumped into this community (among other Linux communities) and started laughing at all the people saying “KDE rules, GNOME drools,” and “GNOME is better, KDE is for babies.” But then I thought, “Why not give KDE a try? The...

I love both. I can’t decide on which to make my full daily. GNOME sleek. KDE is nostalgic and customizable. I have Fedora with GNOME and OpenSuse with KDE. OpenSuse has issues with some SD cards and some phone’s flash memory. GNOME can’t have desktop shortcuts, which I find annoying. I may just go back to Debian with KDE and GNOME and switch back and forth. I think that still possible. I haven’t tried that in a while.

I see the merit in it, but I see the desktop as a shortcut area for most used apps. Like the dock, but I can’t stand docks. I normally have 2-3 icons on the desktop. Terminal is by keyboard shortcut.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

beau·coup (bō′ko͞o′, bo͞o′-, bō-ko͞o′) also boo·coo or boo·koo (bo͞o′-)Informal

I chose boocoos, because it looks funny.

short question by an aspiring user

Hello, apparently hanging out in Lemmy inadvertently makes you thinking about using Linux. I am planning to install Linux Mint cinnamon on an older laptop, which I want to bring to LAN Parties. From what I read I can just format my C:\ windows disk, install Linux via bootable drive and from what I understand, proton is basically...

01189998819991197253,
@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

You don’t need to worry about formatting. The installer can do that for you as part of the process. Just make sure you merge all of the existing Windows partitions into one, then let the installer partition as needed. I’m not 100% sure about the Steam question, but I think I remember reading somewhere that this is the case.

Keep in mind, Linux isn’t magic. If the hardware sucks, the hardware sucks. Games can take a lot of resources. Just make sure your old LAN party laptop can handle the games you want to play on it.

Side note: Mint Cinnamon is a perfect choice for a starter distro.

In the program menu (“Start” menu), search for Software Manager. It’s basically an app store.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

That’s a good MO to have. I was talking about the partitions that Windows does on its own, depending on the version, of course, and the ones that the manufacturer does. For example, Lenovo has a recovery partition with a (supposedly) untouched installer for the Lenovo bloatwared OOTB Windows installation. Since you never plan on using that laptop for that version of windows again, you can just merge all partitions on that drive, and let the Mint installer use the whole drive for its purpose.

What’s the benefit of Aegis over FreeOTP+?

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Popularity aside, you sold me on the import compatibility. FreeOTP+ can export to other FreeOTP+ installations, but I’ve had issues with exporting to other apps. I had to manually import using the secrets displayed within FreeOTP+. The encryption sold me. I will be migrating to Aegis. I haven’t heard of it until this post, and have been using FreeOTP+ sans encryption.

This may be true for some breeds, but not for huskies. At the animal shelter, several people told me that they get many husky strays, because the dig under or hop over fences. They all, separately, recommended that I use an electric fence. Not believing them, and since I don’t like electric fences, I asked the vet, who said the same thing. I asked about a tall fence, but the vet urged me to get an electric fence. For other dog breeds, a fence is good enough. For huskies, a fence will not work long-term.

E: the vet also recommended a tether, since I don’t like electric fences. But I can’t bring myself to tether him. What if he gets wrapped up in something and gets hurt or killed? I won’t risk that.

Why isn't everyone talking about AI generated audiobooks?

I just listened to this AI generated audiobook and if it didn’t say it was AI, I’d have thought it was human-made. It has different voices, dramatization, sound effects… The last I’d heard about this tech was a post saying Stephen Fry’s voice was stolen and replicated by AI. I hopped between distros every couple months, then discovered Ubuntu, which I used for years. Then Unity happened. Mint for years after that. Budgie for a little while, but hated the UX similarities to Mac. Then back to Mint. Tried Ubuntu again, but still can’t do Unity. Now I’m Fedora Silverblue on one laptop and OpenSuse on the other. I’m loving both, but I’ll probably go back to Mint soon enough. Mint now comes with GNOME as an option, right? Meh. Even if it doesn’t, I can install the DE after the fact. I’m having a hard time deciding between KDE and GNOME, honestly.

Feedback on CalyxOS

UPDATEThank you for your feedback! Based on what you all provided, I’m going to postpone installing any de-Googled Android OS for the time. It seems there’s still a lot that needs to be worked on in terms of device and application support, and I don’t have the time to work out the kinks and issues that might show up here...
