I like the implication that someone put the Sega Dreamcast into their contacts list.

Probably just down to less stuff running in the background using up CPU cycles. I can’t imagine it makes a huge difference, but more than nothing.

I hope so…but humans only please.

American democracy could be significantly improved just by adding term limits Senators and Representatives, plus an age cap for Congress and the President. Taking steps to break the two party system would be even better.

I personally like Germany’s approach to parliamentary representation, where you vote for both a district representative and a party. Once the district seats are filled, more seats are added until each party is proportionally represented. This goes a long way to reducing the spoiler effect and helping third parties get a voice.

I know this is a controversial take, but I actually like the electoral college in principle. The goal of the electoral college is to balance the interests of urban and rural voters so that whoever wins the election will hopefully be good for both. Currently, electoral votes are distributed based on the results of simple majority votes at the state level, with some states including a ‘winner takes all’ rule. If it were up to me, I’d instead use state level alternative votes or something similar, and ban the 'winner takes all’s rule.

However, I don’t think we will see any of these in a very long time, if ever. The current system benefits the people currently in it, why would they change it? IIRC, the UK had a referendum to switch voting systems years ago, and their two biggest parties banded together to pressure voters to keep the existing system.

Probably because we’re too comfortable interacting with online strangers with the protection of semi-anonymity.

Freebooting Twitter Account getting millions of views without credit, original creators get next to none... (lemmy.world)

Description: A freebooting Twitter account (very likely without permission) posts a screenshot of a TikTok with no credit and gets millions of views and hundreds of thousands of likes. The creators of the original video respond, and get next to no views. (And currently have 6 likes on the tweet.)...

Glad to see that at least the Freebooting term is kept alive even if Hello Internet isn’t.

Just reorient the map like they did on ancient maps! Then East can be on top and West on the bottom.

Vanilla just means unmodified, exactly what you think.

However, some people might still refer to mods that don’t significantly change gameplay as vanilla. For instance, the Vanilla Tweaks resource pack is filled with small changes to the appearance of things in the game. Some might also consider the Optifine or Sodium mods to be Vanilla since they don’t change gameplay.

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly my thoughts. There’s vanilla in terms of modded/unmodded, and then there’s how close it looks or feels to the base game.

Wow I actually love this idea. There could be some common symbol in the crests to denote what kind of open source license they follow (GNU, MIT, etc), affiliation with other software, all sorts of cool stuff.

You do own your own likeness, though. So I think you probably have some right to prevent someone from making deep fakes of you.

Yes and no. The truth is that most of the community responsible for keeping Minecraft relevant are on Java. If they kill Java, they also kill Fabric, Spigot, Paper, all the modpacks and such.

Java is the marketing department, Bedrock is the sales department. Mojang needs to keep Java just functional enough for the community to do the marketing for them.

Who is Daldo…is he on Spotify?

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

B since all movement is relative.

This was a triumph.

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

All motion is relative. To understand how the people will move, we need to look at them relative to the portal. If the trolly is moving at 5 m/s relative to the ground, then the people are moving at 1 m/s relative to it. So they enter the portal moving at 1 m/s and exit at the same speed.

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but portals violate basic physics anyway.

A portal that faces downwards into another portal is effectively a perpetual motion machine. Drop a ferromagnetic object into the loop and wrap some wires around the loop, now you have an infinite electric generator.

The thing is that Revanced follows a new distribution model. Rather than distributing a modified app, they instead distribute patches for the normal YouTube APK so that the user modifies the app on their own device. Thus, ReVanced never distributes any of Google’s IP. It’s kinda like game modding. ReVanced will be a lot harder for Google to kill.

The one downside for ReVanced is that it’s harder for ordinary users to install, so that will limit its popularity.

If I understand correctly, there’s nothing about Firefox that makes ad blockers any harder to detect. What can Firefox and uBlock do to stop Google from blocking adblock users on the site?

That said, I use Firefox and uBlock myself, and I’ve yet to see YouTube stop me from using the site.

whileloop,

We should all take up writing backwards like Da Vinci. Benefits include:

  • not smudging everything we write
  • not getting as many cramps in our hands
  • making our writing much harder for righties to read.

It’s kinda tragic too. I do agree with the sentiment behind age verification, it is in the kids’ best interest that they not be using porn at that age. But there’s really no way to effectively enforce this without violating basic rights. There is no good solution. Given that dilemma, all we can do is try to better prepare parents to deal with this in their home.

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

Watch HealthyGamerGG on YouTube, he’s done a few videos on it. But, in short, depending on the person porn can have a lot of negative effects on the individual, including damaging one’s ability to form and keep relationships.

It is my opinion that we would all be better off without porn, but it is your right to continue using it if you like.

The Republicans are absolutely going about this the wrong way. For the record, I’ve told my representatives in government to oppose bills like this. But that doesn’t mean you and I can’t understand where their sentiment is coming from.

Building a browser is hard, and it’s even harder when one of the maker of the most popular browser also operates several of the most popular websites. So most other browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, and many more) are Chromium under the hood. This means that they often implement Google’s preferred web functionality as opposed to the actual standard. If Google wants some feature going into the browser, most Chromium derivatives will follow their lead. Even though Brave has rejected many of Google’s moves, I’d argue it still isn’t enough since they still give Google some control over web standards.

The Internet needs to be impartial and fair in its design, this means it shouldn’t be influenced by any one interest in particular. Google’s indirect influence over nearly the whole browser market goes against the principle of an open web. The only way to fight effectively this is to use an independent browser, like Firefox.

KeePass is also a good password manager, it’s open source and you get to store the password database anywhere you like.
