higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs (lemmy.world)

Went to a restaurant in LA today and when I got the check I noticed that it was a bit higher than it should be. Then I noticed this 18% service charge. So… We, as customers, need to help pay for their servers instead of the owners paying their servers a living wage. And on top of that they have suggested tip. I called bs on...

wesker,
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

So it’s a mandatory tip, and it’s also suggested you voluntarily leave a secondary tip.

Tip culture in America is so aggressive.

Just a word of caution, don’t skimp on protection. Pixels are excellent, but in my own experience very prone to drop damage.

For those of us that won’t ever have kids, pets can allow us to exercise and nurture our instincts to take care of a dependent, living creature. I feel like that’s pretty psychically and emotionally important, especially in a new world where more people are choosing not to raise children.

wesker,
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, it’s pretty much everything for me too. The biggest exception being when UI is involved and a longhand date format would be more friendly.

Forgive my fixation, but this was a really touching IASIP scene, and the captions aren’t actually what he said.

EDIT: Including this link to the scene, because it’s so amazing.

The man dancing is Mac. He’s a closeted gay man, who is finally coming out to those around him, but has struggled with how he is going to come out to his father. His father is the inmate, who gets up and walks out halfway through Mac’s attempt to express who he is as a gay man, through dance.

The man who is emotionally affected and “gets it” is Frank. Frank is a dysfunctional father-figure of sorts to the younger members of the gang, which includes Mac. Up until this point he’s been following Mac around, trying to support him while he comes to terms with his gayness, but the whole time he just keeps saying he “doesn’t get it”.

Mac’s performance may not have gotten through to his biological father, but his spiritual father Frank finally understands what Mac was trying to tell him about who he is and how he feels, but up until then couldn’t articulate through words.

wesker,
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Aspiring to be some vague archetypal construct of what a man is seems silly to me. I think people should aspire to have certain values and scruples. Most valuable men I’ve met were defined by their behavior and actions, rather than image and projection.

wesker,

Traditional gender roles are useful until they’re no longer useful, as a society changes. I think western culture is going through a number of identity crises as a result of changes to various status quo, and the idea of “manliness” has become confusing for many. And unfortunately, the western world isn’t great at suggesting or encouraging healthy alternatives or the means to individually arrive at them. We instead wage culture wars, point fingers, and do disservice to those suffering in silent confusion.

This is all clearly just my opinion from my armchair, and I respect and welcome contrasting points of view.

What the U.S. could learn from Japan about making healthy living easier (www.npr.org)

The emphasis on fresh high-quality food made me wonder if that sort of food is more satisfying (and filling) than what the author sees in American food. Does eating poor quality food leave you hungry? (Also, consider people living in “grocery deserts” who subsist on large amounts of fast food. Their obesity rates are very...

Am I correct that you also don’t get access to the extensions marketplace, though?

Why do they keep making new languages

Why are there so many programming languages? And why are there still being so many made? I would think you would try to perfect what you have instead of making new ones all the time. I stopped smoking a good 14 years ago, so I’m afraid I will have to go straight to see it.
