Gnubyte,

Maybe there is confusion in what I am saying. Yes. That is not ChatGPT’s API:

https://lemdit.com/pictrs/image/e4d7e63b-5cf5-49eb-8a66-9d8216ab5a57.png

What I mean is - it literally has an API server you can run yourself if you want to programmatically talk to it. Here is a screenshot of the menu option.

Gnubyte,
Gnubyte,

Its locally hosted including the model and the runtime. You can have your program open up a server and bind ports locally if you want to run your own server and not just a desktop GUI.

Gnubyte,

I think it’s especially the money and LGBTQ+ and non sexual norms that are driving people to the right. I notice when I talk to a lot of younger guys theyre tired of hearing about it.

Because it’s pushed on so much of their TV shows and things they like that they side with political candidates that are conservative at a young age and they further grow into it. These are conservative candidates with lots of money usually.

I hate to say it but it was universally cool to defend LGBT people when the media and TV shows didn’t push it. Because you were defending an oppressed person. Now it more so feels like it’s popular which means it’s no longer an obscure thing, the anti culture is the new trend.

I want to disclaim that I don’t agree with any of this other than to say this is my observation of the behavior. I play rainbow six ranked on Xbox and use the looking for group party finder with a buddy of mine. We group up and encounter a lot of guys in the army and Marines, a lot of teenagers and this is cumulatively the culture I’ve heard. Same thing on like world of warcraft classic and using discord to raid but those guys run older typically.

Gnubyte,

Look if going to college didn’t cost four years of time with 20K per year, where in my career you’d be near to outdated (tech), I’d go.

But for tech I feel like its almost a scam. I’d rather have the certs and/or practical knowledge or be able to go through an interview via algorithms, soft skills, explaining how to go through what I know. Its harder work to learn this way but I think it keeps your skills sharper.

Gnubyte,

I got perma banned off of reddit for commenting on a sub that I had been banned from, and instead of them just not letting my comment post - they instead basically ban you for posting again.

So if you get banned of a sub on reddit and forget because…who cares… You get yourself perma’d for ban evasion.

I got banned from like a news sub for saying “surprise not everyone shares your political opinion, of course there’s dissent”.

That’s when reddit for me went absolutely to shit. Just getting blacklisted by mods who are reading into everything.

Gnubyte,

Thank you! Appreciate it

Gnubyte,

Definitely will look into the MacBooks power consumption. The logic checks out for sure. I have to measure my current laptops too.

Gnubyte,

I ended up figuring out im averaging about 120w on my desktop which isn’t bad at all.

A web browser, a code editor and some docker containers or binaries. Nothing incredibly strenuous. Like I’m not gaming.

Gnubyte,

I have to ask how do you like the pine book pro?

I have one of their phones but the software at the time was really under developed so it mostly sat for a few years

I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse

I use ad blockers and open source privacy focused software whenever I can but occasionally I have to use computers that don’t belong to me or an older phone where my usual applications aren’t installed and seeing all the advertisements just feels dirty and dystopian....

Gnubyte,

Idk I just pay for stuff if I like it so no ads. Like including DVDs or streaming services. Or I use FOSS and everything’s good.

Gnubyte,

Unregulated lobbied capitalism. I’m okay with capitalism and competing ideas. What I’m not okay with is some of the late stage problems we’ve encountered as a society. Assuming the US average person lives to be a very low of 50, we are four generations deep. Ive known two generations in my own lineage. That’s not very long.

It’s okay to make better systems. Even for billionaires its okay because a rising tide floats all the boats. This is something that needs to be taught better to the upper class. If these guys had less complaining workers, people willing to contribute more so in their enterprises, workers who are happy to make their products, it would be fine. Putting the squeeze on the little guy does nothing for these dudes besides some tight margins.

Coupled with a very elderly legislative body we are left with senseless greed in both trade and politics. Portions of the population just consume politics like it’s a sitcom. What we’re left with is a system in need of refinement.

Gnubyte,

I don’t know man I just work here

Gnubyte,

I haven’t seen anyone really saying that. Reddits a cesspool of hyper moderation. They’ll ban their own users and Lemmy will literally be default

Gnubyte,

Stop right there criminal scum. Pay the court a defederation. Your posts are now forfeit.

Gnubyte,

You’re right. Maybe u/gnubyte is our savior?!

His patreon is loaded with funny and tech posts.

Gnubyte,

No. They’ll just name an entire lineup of the worlds biggest computers after your daughter.

Gnubyte,

Sorry, I couldn’t find a better sub. It’s like misc news I guess? So I just posted it up hoping to get some decent chatter going in the comments.

Gnubyte,

lmao I guess so huh? I don’t know man. I appreciate just having a few simple subs and posting to them though. I think thats what I was really getting at. I got the news article from google news and thought Id share it.

Gnubyte,

That’s hot. I see the clowns have blown in for the quadrennial clown show.

Gnubyte,

You’re about to make a lot of enemies 😂

Last time someone posted this stupid fucking article up on a different tech lemmy I got into it with some single brain cells morons.

It’s open source tech. You could fork the entire thing if you didn’t like the CEO. Who cares.

Gnubyte,

Gaming. It used to be an MMO for like $15 a month. Now it’s a new game for $70, the game has DLC for $20-$30 or skins or some battle pass.

Gnubyte,

Keep your friends close.

Keep your enemies closer. Where do you think GOP Republicans live? Texas. What vehicles do they drive? Gas/diesel.

Call him everything he is. But he is a fantastic businessman for going to the place of most resistance and turning his worst demographic to his biggest group of followers.

Gnubyte,

I don’t have access to that data. And I don’t won’t to be misconstrued as promoting Elon or his activities (not that you’re doing that but I see the downvotes).

I’m just explaining what I think he’s doing. It’s what I’d pitch personally if I noticed red voters trend and visibly meme anti EV and I had obligations to shareholders I had to keep.

People are better off buying EV anyways. ICE vehicles are disgusting. I think people just like to assign large structures like businesses and folks like Elon to their political idealogies. Businesses and governments have to be larger than that because they need to serve people at the end of the day with either product or policy.

Gnubyte,

I wonder if they know that starfield is coming out, no man’s sky’s been available forever, and there’s a plethora of other games out there.

I think people are addicted to a fantasy.

Idea: fediverse of ecommerce. Time to dethrone amazon and ebay. What do you think?

Buying from an alternative ecommerce site usually sucks: you have to register for every website, enter your address, payment information and other information, they may leak data or store it improperly, you may not know the reputation of the website or business, you can’t easily compare products with other vendors and more....

Gnubyte,

I had the same idea but there’s a lot of actual tangible assets that have to be dealt with.

The first part is picking a pilot country which is probably where the developer lives. The second is either investing in or partnering with Fast ship locations - you need a service or partner that you can use like Amazon prime to store inventory across a country, and last is shipping and delivery maybe it’s baked in. I bet there’s a company that does this that has an API or partnership program.

In other words you have to establish partnerships or literally incentivize real people to invest in order to create the same value as Amazon. The magic of amazon isn’t really that’s it’s like eBay and buying things online, it’s that I can get it so soon.

Gnubyte,

I’m a fan of looking up articles information especially in regards to far left media. Far right usually is pretty easy to tell it’s fake because it’s so outlandish and off the cuff.

I looked into some of the guys mentioned in this article to confirm if they’re far right or if they’re actually just some old guy bitching about the way things used to be and going a little too far… No. It was like hardcore racists making insane remarks online. Some of them I couldn’t find but look it up. One of them has a website. Insanity.

Good article OP.

Gnubyte,

Hmm.

I think capitalism isn’t the problem nor is liking and consuming a product or experience. We have great products turned into entire experiences here in the US, and I’m not terribly upset anymore about it.

The problem is the late stage unchecked capitalism running rampant. I think allowing individuals the freedom to pursue their ideas and allow others to even build livelihoods from it works great. But there’s gotta be checks and balances, its what the USA was founded on.

Gnubyte,

Yeah buddy.

Gnubyte,

We need an article summary bot up in here man. I got walled off after a few paragraphs and it wanted my email to store in their database😅

Gnubyte,

😂 thanks for the chuckle

Gnubyte,

I’m thinking of moving to a state that’s colder where I can buy land that has water within the property.

I also think to do anything sizeable you need the resources a company can bring. Our problems are at scale. You need a scaled resource pool and reinvestment in that to work up to some of the issues. I like the idea of carbon extraction for example, but I don’t see any resources invested in it from US companies.

Gnubyte,

Thanks for sharing some info. And no I didn’t know that. I appreciate that it was a mild sharing of info. I’m from New England and I think even just getting back to home and leaving the intense heat of California would feel far more comfortable.

You’d be surprised what living on the other side of the mountain - in silicon valley - brings for heat. Santa Cruz feels nice normal and cool to me while the valley just gets so scorching it’s almost untenable living here.

Gnubyte,

Ah yeah the guy who opposed Putin

Yeah surprise he’s dead

Gnubyte,

I’ll generalize and say there are many my age in their 20s that watch things like TikTok and shorts that are conditioned for the fastest intake of media. This means ignoring the written word outside of texts.

Even myself, if I see a wall of text in an article, I know to skip the fluffer ad-reads down to paragraph three, then skim. To be fair most articles could be wrapped up to maybe two paragraphs but get extended for ad spots. Outside the context of reading articles on say lemmy, especially online, there is a largely missed hear mean not what I’m saying operating in good faith that often gets missed online. For example if someone posts an article about how smoking kills you, and I post a comment that “yes but its a creature comfort” I am not refuting it kills you - I’m merely suggesting that its a rough world and that people have vices to cope.

Nuance and assumption that we’re acknowledging it is often lost on people.

Gnubyte,
  • Too much fluff on interweb
  • assume others online are writing in brevity

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

Gnubyte, (edited )

Those are all expensive, used Thinkpad is below the ground-dirt cheap…$150?!

My Thinkpad Ultrabook was insanely cheap even with a docking station. I do donate to Pop OS once a year though as a thanks for their work and I recommend the same. It’s like $12 a year on their site and they do great work.

Trying to get one of their laptops but thats in short order for me, for now.

Adding on:

  • lack of quick shipping
  • proxied payments like PayPal or apple gpay
  • some use laptop kits that are supposedly cheap
  • hardware different from software if it breaks and there’s no store or big company to ask for a refund from, you’ll be pissed
  • some of the hardware reviews about bugs and their handling of them are damning

If you haven't heard of it - Nostr is a decentralized twitter alt - but uses relays as soft servers (www.youtube.com)

Hey folks. Just wanted to put out a good word about Nostr. I’m finding it to be pleasantly easy to use and very akin to twitter but uses soft servers in the form of relays. Its not quite moving away from servers but where decentralization is happening frequently, its nice to give that liberty back to users....

Gnubyte,

Maybe you don’t really want an account one one server but rather the whole experience. Seems good nuff for that.

Gnubyte,

I’m so green to it I can’t comment. What have you seen that’s a turn off?

I see a whole lot of meme coiners over there so far lol.

Gnubyte,

Because it fucking gaslighting. I remember having this WTF moment when I was reading the O’Reilly Ethereum programming book.

If web 2 was html 5 and css3, how does a protocol that relies solely on money being transacted make the basis of web3?

This sounds exactly like a VC plot. “There will be money exchanged on every transaction”. I bet they lost their minds in the pitch room when they heard it.
