For example, I’m sure the average joe doesn’t know just how expensive calligraphy pens can be, or how deep the rabbit hole goes on video game speedruns.
And when you invite a bunch people over and tell them yeah we’re into coffee and they ask you for coffee and you’re like… Ok I am incapable of making coffee for more than 2 people in under 15 minutes, I need to pull out the senseo pad machine.
They tell you that having a kid changes you but I was not prepared to freaking love raisins from literally one day to the next. Ever since I popped out that kid I fucking love raisins. Didn’t like them in pregnancy, didn’t like them before, one day plopp and goddamn raisins are the best.
When we flew for the first time (also short flight, baby was ~11 months) we had her in a carrier (ergobaby) and she fell asleep. I don’t know if you planned on booking an extra seat or not, we didn’t since it was a very small plane and there were no 3 seats in a row and also we didn’t come by car (so bringing an extra maxi cosi would have been a nuicance). If you don’t, you get a kind of extra seat belt to attach to your seat belt so the baby sits on your lap. What surprised us is that they didn’t force us to take her out of the ergobaby but looked at us, basically saying “noiccce” with their eyes, and let us just sit like this. It was insanely more comfortable and actuallt more secure than with that seatseatbeltbelt consturction. I guess they realized this, I mean the baby is completely strapped to my body. Anyway, I was very grateful that it turned out there was no policy about having to use the seatseatbeltbelt and prohibiting the carrier. This way our baby was secure and slept for most of the flight (also on the way back. She slept 50/60 minutes one way and 60/60 the other.) The other obvious recommendation is breastfeed (/bottlefeed) on the lap during takeoff and landing.
There be people like that. My dad was a professor for applied mathematics at a top level university in Germany, published books etc. Nowadays he works as an indepentdent business consultants and is insanely successful on an international level. And while he does believe climate change is real he is very, uhm, alternative when it comes to health and nutrition. Think fruit juices and nutrition supplements and sun doesn’t cause cancer and “holding a lazer to your heel makes your rotten teeth unrotten” kinda stuff. (Didn’t work.) Watches weird ass youtube videos by “experts”. Me, having a M.Sc. in Nutrition and Biomedicine, I am in no way an expert like these people or himself when it comes to nutrition, health and medicine, according to him. People can be extremely smart and talented in some parts of their lives and be completely bonkers in others.
My dad isn’t German but he only became obsessed with alt health and nutrition once he moved to Germany… Coincidence? I think not - there must be something in the air here that turns people crazy
I keep the books I read for sentimental reasons and because usually they have notes in them. But I definitely do not look into them on a regular basis. Even the books that I do reread or look something up in I do this maybe 2-3 times a year. Those are the frequent use books. Most I “use” less often. Now, if I open a book once a year or less I can also put it away in a box, the basement, or hide it somewhere in the closet. It does not need to be easily accessible. I also have raclette that I use once a year and it is also crammed in the back of a closet because I need other things to be quickly and easily accessible. If anything, it is me who uses the books as decoration as I keep them on display in a bookshelf - not because it shows my intent or interest to reread them. This is to say that while it looks impractical in the first glance, it doesn’t mean the books are less used or used more often. The way they are stored doesn’t need to mean anything. You can also find some joy in finding the right book by just remembering its thickness or size or color or where it is stored because you actually do pull it out so often. I even remember having this kind of “ha, gotcha, you thought I wouldn’t find you immediately, huh, you’re so wrong kiddo” feeling when I pulled out a favorite book from a bookpile when I couldn’t see the covers.
I feel weirdly uncomfortable with both and I would choose c) in the middle of the neck And I am not sure how to view you as a human being if your perception differs
It’s no secret that Lemmy is shaping up to be a viable alternative to Reddit. The issue it faces however is that it’s still relatively niche and not many people know about it. I propose that we change this. By contacting the mods of large subreddits and asking them to make and promote relevant Lemmy communities we could...
I know what you mean. I’ve been struggling myself. On top of kind of being unable to relate, I’m not tech savvy and with a demanding toddler on me I just don’t find the time or energy to figure out how to even search for the right communities. I’m trying, but at 2 am when I have 15 minutes for myself and this app asks me what instance I want to view something in and doesn’t let me comment something somewhere and then I try to check whether Abrathatfits is already on lemmy I get a million (non bra related) search results - it’s just echausting for I don’t know what. I miss the memes (I don’t get 80% of the memes here since most are some jokes about tech or coding), and I miss the girly subs. I miss makeup addiction ffs and beyond the bump, and moldly interesting. I like politics in general but somehow the communities here don’t have any news that I care about. The ukraine communities are also rather dead here, that was an important one since I have family on both sides of the border. Maybe I should put more effort into it, more energy, more search les and adjustments, but it might just be that lemmy, while a great concept, is just not for me. Maybe there just aren’t the communities I need. I also doubt I will go back to reddit but damn, I am lost. Maybe I should. Especially when it comes to Ukraine I am really debating whether supporting a futile protest of a social media website to make a point is really worth being less informed and connected. Sorry for the long rant tho.
“I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures all over the internet of people who have had these shots and now they’re magnetized,” Tenpenny said to the panel of lawmakers....
Also why would anyone deliberately magnetize the population what’s the benefits supposed to be?
… Maybe that when you turn on the supermagnets on the, uhm, poles, or in China or something, everyone lines up pretty well adjusted rows automatically? And everyone would face the same way. There’s gotta be some benefit in that.
Ok but… Who cares? I’m not a youtuber trying to get upvotes and subscriptions for an algorithm so I can get more ad revenue, why would I care about my karma score?
Wanted to ask you about this article, how do you remember the early days of the internet (I was sadly too young at that time). Do you wish it back? And do you think it can ever be like that again? I would be very interested
I’m going to be camping for 4 days at a location without easy access to fire (hence no boiled water). As such, I’m going to be packing a bunch of canned stuff for my daily meals. The place is in England, where we’re expecting a few hot days this week and maybe some rain over the weekend....
I used to wear mittens in the shower but I changed to fingerless gloves around 2014 when it became the new trend. You gotta know how to stay cool despite standing in a hot shower. Go with the flow.
Ok, apart from the biased article, the price (that sometimes is a bit more for trains than flights) isn’t as much of a problem as the mix and match of railway systems across europe which makes it awfully difficult to get from here to there fast and without a lot of changing trains. Each change is a risk of being late once your train is delayed and then your whole journey is off.
For the love of God, I really tried to find a train connection to Pula from Munich. I really tried. Even thought going through Italy, and taking a ferry from Venice. But it would have required changing trains 6 times or so and would have taken approx. 24 hours, whilst being indeed more expensive - as far as I could tell, since I cannot buy all the tickets at one place. I still feel horrible but I ended up flying there. If I was by myself I would have taken on the trip with the changes. Or considered a coach although all my experiences with coaches sucked so hard. But with a one year old it was just not feasible.
Adam Something has a great video on why trains in Europe are… Not as simple.

Bro I don’t even understand what a server is. My spouse explains it to me like every second week and I get it for like 30 seconds but I just don’t understand to remember. I’m also not sure what a router is. Apparently Wifi is like radio, just waves? Wtf
I’ve got a MSc degree in Biomedicine and before going on parental leave (still am) I’ve worked in pharmaceutical research and with DNA/RNA analytical services in the lab. My biggest tech experience was trying to code with R and I hated it and it was a mess.
It really is. Even for data analysis there are (apparently and hopefully) much better programs/languages (not sure what term would be correct here). I was actually assigned to an institude for computational biology to help me with the coding for my Master’s thesis but the people DID NOT USE R so they didn’t provide any help anyway. And I had to use R. They mostly used mathlab. Later, when I started working, Graphpad Prism absolutely did the job necessary. Most of the “coding” I used R for could have honestly just be done in Excel.
But the worst part of it is making it through and it completely doesn’t matter. Like, people who actually code for a living don’t care in the slightest about R. Just because I now have fought my way through it doesn’t mean it is anywhere useful to learn C or PHP or whatever, mostly because the field of use is so narrow and specific and not one of those “universal” languages (for lack of a better term) that you actually can build software and websites and apps with. I cannot code anything “for fun” even if I wanted to. I remember there was something HTML something in R, but come on. (Also I forgot what HTML is.) This is not what it is used for and it gives me nothing. While my spouse, who is a software developer with the patience of a saint when it comes to my stupid questions, used his knowledge of python to learn Rust and then play around with C and now Go and even go to a conference about Go and actually understand whats going on there. There seem to be much more crosslinks and transferring going on and also a similar usefulness.
Please excuse the R-rant/R-rage, I am really frustrated about it because I went in with the best intentions and I wasted a year on this bullshit and it doesn’t even make my CV look good.
I agree with you so much. The only time I ever click on shorts are accidents. I hate them. I don’t use instagram, tiktok, anything like that. I don’t want to see shorts. They are horribly crammed and well, way too short. Leave me alone and stop autoplaying on my tv.
