slowd0wn,

I see that your wife and my wife have the same remote on their wishlists

slowd0wn,

This is really a shame. Insurgency is one of the best FPS games I’ve ever played

slowd0wn,

You’re just saying tea tea

slowd0wn,

Man is brainwashed into blindly following libertarian extremists

slowd0wn,

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

slowd0wn,

I missed the whole server debacle at launch, but I did play a few matches after the first week. I really want to like the game, but the lack of voice chat really kills it for me. The ping system feels lackluster and unintuitive, and trying to coordinate with random teammates is frustratingly difficult. If you have a full squad on discord I can see it being a ton of fun, but as a soloQer I’m gonna pass on this for a while

slowd0wn,

I was thinking more along the lines of MC Lars

Is there an alternative to "motherfucker" that people would actually use?

The word can have swearing but not genderisation which might be offensive (mother) nor allusions to sexual dominance (motherfucker). Nor, other possibly offensive connotations. It seems that the word is commonplace and people won’t stop using it, so an alternative to the word may be useful. But the problem with alternatives,...

slowd0wn,

‘You fucking donkey’ is a personal favorite

Army of Darkness

They said terrible films, not the greatest horror film of all time

slowd0wn,

He knows the origin of the word “totalitarian” without looking it up. Because memorization is obviously the cornerstone of critical thinking

slowd0wn,

Haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but besides the performance issues at launch this looked like a really enjoyable game. Maybe the main issue is that the genre is relatively niche? That coupled with the recent big releases

Is the purpose of life to be happy?

When I’m unhappy, I feel like I’m doing life wrong. I’d rather be happy. But is happiness the point of life, or is there more to it? If I pursue happiness, mine first then for those around me, is that selfish? But if there’s a bigger purpose, then what about people with Alzheimer’s or dementia who can’t recall recent...

slowd0wn,

This is quite the existential question! Of course, there’s really no “right” or “wrong” answer, and there are so many different ideas on what the meaning of life is.

My opinion? There isn’t one. The fact we exist at all is a wildly random event, and the fact we are conscious of it even more so. Life is meaningless, so we create our own meaning. For me, the meaning of life is to strive for happiness (not BE happy, we can’t be happy 100% of the time), bring happiness to those around me, and leave the world better than I came into it. I don’t give a shit about legacy, since I won’t be around to enjoy it. The only legacy I care about is that I made life better for the people I love.

Treat others with kindness, be mindful of the world you live in, and do more of what makes you happy.

slowd0wn,

I’d everyone else died of old age and you are the last, would you still want to leave the earth better than you found it?

Yes. Humans are not the only thing existing on this planet, and I find it rather arrogant to treat it this way. If I’m alone staring down the heat death of our universe? Well it doesn’t quite matter anymore.

Would you take comfort in or be indifferent to the happiness you brought

Absolutely. This is probably more nurture vs nature though. I’m very much an atheist but was raised in a strong Christian household. I’ve shunned the religious aspect, but “Love your neighbor as yourself” is pretty much ingrained in my DNA at this point. I find happiness in bringing it to others.

As for ideas of good and better, of course they are my own opinions and based on experiences of others. There is no objective “good” and “better”, because there is no objectively true meaning to life. For me personally, doing what makes me happy would include eating good food, drinking good whiskey and listening to punk rock. Those are not objectively good, but they are good to me. I will share them with likeminded people, and I will find other ways to better my neighbors’ lives.

Losing momentum at the end of things

I frequently find myself losing momentum at the end of things that I enjoy. For instance, I’ve been playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and loving it. I recently got into the last act (Act 3) of the game, and I’m finding myself a bit burned out on it and gravitating towards other games. I’m also in the last episode of Dimension...

slowd0wn,

I don’t have an answer for you, but I’ve dealt with this same thing my entire life. It’s not a conscious decision, I just find that I never fully complete a task I set out to do. The number of games I’ve dropped 80-90% of the way through is staggeringly high. My home projects always get about 75% done and then are left alone, doomed to be unfinished. The only solution I’ve found is to set smaller goals. Tasks that require multiple sessions of activity before completion are very difficult for me and I quickly lose motivation. I also struggle with completing tasks if I have any sort of interruption, such as getting a phone call or stopping to make dinner. This is why I gravitate toward esports for gaming. I can complete a session within an hour and nothing is left open-ended. The problem there is that I actually prefer playing longer, story-driven games, I just can’t keep myself focused on them over multiple sessions

slowd0wn,

I mean, they kind of are, right? We just pay all of our tolls up front in the form of vehicle registration

slowd0wn,

This kind of thing happens all too often. Going in for a surgery that your insurance will cover? Oops, we forgot to mention that the anesthesiologist is actually out of network, so you’ll have to pay out of pocket for that part.

Shutdown risk looms as US Congress faces spending, impeachment brawl (www.reuters.com)

The House and the Democratic-controlled Senate are due to be in session for about 12 days before funding expires on Sept. 30, leaving little time to agree on a package of 12 appropriations bills that can pass each chamber and win Democratic President Joe Biden’s signature....

slowd0wn,

Republicans pulled this same shit during Obama’s tenure. They have no intention of negotiating in good faith. They want the shutdown so they can point their fingers at Dems during their campaigns in the coming year. We’ll have a shutdown, suspending important government agencies and furloughing hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans just to manufacture an anti-liberal talking point.

slowd0wn,

Oh man, there are a few games you have listed that I’d love! Don’t want to be greedy though. I’d love Graveyard Keeper. Thanks!

slowd0wn,

Accidents by Alexisonfire is the song I play when I’m having a rough day at work and I need something to power me through the last little bit

slowd0wn,

How do you make your Rosemary simple? I make mine by bringing my simple to a simmer, then tossing in fresh sprigs, covering and let steep until the syrup cools. I’m never satisfied with it, though. The rosemary flavor gets buried under the sugar, and the aroma isn’t strong enough to cut through a drink when using 1oz or less

slowd0wn,

Thanks! I’ll give that a shot. We use it at work for a Rosemary Paloma. Delicious, but it could really use more rosemary flavor! I actually considered finding some rosemary extract to add to it

slowd0wn,

I know this is from Pee Ewe’s Big Adventure, but whenever I see this quote all I can think of is The Get Up Kids

slowd0wn,

Agreed here, a cast iron or even carbon steel pan can give the tuna steak a better color, and more importantly, texture to your food.

slowd0wn,

If your nachos don’t include an entire 5 lbs of cheese you aren’t making them correctly

slowd0wn,

I hope the multiplayer is well populated. Q2 was my introduction to MP FPS on PC when I was a kid and solidified my love for it to this day. Would love to jump back in to some railgun-only DM servers

slowd0wn,

Doesn’t this only work if the LLC is created before the purchase of the ticket? In addition, LLC docs are public record, you can look up the operators registered under an LLC

slowd0wn,

Interesting. I do think it’s bullshit that you can’t claim a ticket anonymously in a lot of states. I get having to provide info for tax purposes, but you shouldn’t be required to publicly announce your personal info to claim it

What are you Reading? (August 2023) (lemmy.world)

I’ve put together a collage of some books from last months What are you Reading? post. It’s mostly random, but the more discussion something gets the more it stands out to me. Going forward I’m going to make a new post every month to talk about what people are reading....

slowd0wn,

Wizard and Glass is where I fell off the series, didn’t end up getting far in that one. Although I think it had less to do with that particular book and more of the fatigue of trudging through the books for a few fantastic moments. I enjoyed The Drawing of Three but man it felt like it could’ve been about 30% shorter at times

slowd0wn,

They’re going on tour this winter with The Early November and The Spill Canvas

slowd0wn,

This thread is for UNHELPFUL advice. This right here is the best advice anyone has ever offered

slowd0wn,

Huh, he must’ve really believed that kickboxing was the sport of the future

slowd0wn,

High quality coffee with 1/2-1 oz of half & half is the best thing there is. Lattes are good but I don’t love the idea of drinking 8-12 oz of milk with every coffee. If I’m drinking diner swill I might add a little sugar, but any other time it’s black or a touch of half & half

slowd0wn,

Really? I’m on kbin right now reading this post from Lemmy.world

slowd0wn,

I’m not a coder, so hopefully you can answer my question. When using open source code, does each instance of borrowed code need to be “tagged” and identified to attribute to the original author? My brain keeps telling me that all this code needs is a MLA reference page, but after reading this post I’m assuming it’s more difficult than that.
