rtxn,

This is the Warlockpicking Lawyer, and what I have for you today is a forged iron lock commonly used on utility entrances of royal properties. While most locksmiths would begin by trying to bypass the warding, I have chosen a less refined method. Every locksmith worth their salt knows that even the strongest locks are useless if the hinges are destroyed. So I’m going to take this war pick that Bosmer Bill and I made, and get to work.

Fatal shooting of University of South Carolina student who tried to enter wrong home 'justifiable,' police say (www.nbcnews.com)

The homeowner who fatally shot a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student who tried to enter the wrong home on the street he lived on Saturday morning will not face charges because the incident was deemed “a justifiable homicide” under state law, Columbia police announced Wednesday....

usa_anthem_kazoo_earrape.mp3 playing in the background. This shit is abnormal in the rest of the world.

rtxn,

(to my NAT gateway) “You pass the packets.”

rtxn,

I have no idea what that is, but it sounds like something an insane energy drink company CEO would use in their advertisements.

Elohim

Pros:

  • Sounds badass
  • Exotic
  • Gender-neutral (technically plural, but most often used in the same context as the singular they)
  • Originally used as a placeholder name for deities, which I consider trans people to be
  • Judeo-Christians take 2d4 holy damage every time they acknowledge you

Cons:

  • Who cares, you are a god.
rtxn,

I’d make every scissor a little bit loose so whatever it’s cutting turns sideways and gets stuck near the end.

rtxn,

As a kid, I didn’t understand why left-handed scissors were a thing. Then I had to cut a wide strip of fabric with my non-dominant left hand.

It was an experience.

Hello, I’m going to be getting a new computer soon and have thought about linux. Questions inside

With the new computer and the newer Microsoft Windows updates they have really jam packed their OS with bloat and spyware. That being said I have no idea what I’m doing with Linux, need help with where to start.? What are some general tips? I understand there’s a lot of prebuilt Linux distributions or something what are some...

rtxn,

As others have said, Linux Mint is probably the best distro for absolute beginners. You’ll have several desktop environments to choose from (the software suite that gives you things like window frames, the taskbar, the application launcher…). I like KDE Plasma and Cinnamon - Plasma is a lot more customizable, but Cinnamon is more robust and (IMO) better suited for beginners.

You’ll have to unlearn a lot of Windows habits.

  • :q! is very important, remember it.
  • You won’t download application installers from the internet, you’ll have to either use the system’s own package manager in the terminal (APT for Mint), a GUI front-end, or Flatpak.
  • You won’t be able to choose where software are installed.
  • There are no lettered drives. There is a single root filesystem (equivalent to C: on Windows), and every other partition has to be mounted somewhere within that filesystem. Most graphical file manager applications take care of that automatically.
  • Updates are very important. Fortunately they are much less of a pain in the ass. Graphical package manager apps usually offer automatic reminders, or you can use the terminal to update manually.
  • The terminal is much more important compared to Windows, and you should learn basic things like navigating the filesystem, handling files and directories, how to use sudo (eq. run as admin), how to manage running processes (top, kill/pkill/killall), and how to use the package manager.
  • Use manuals and the man command. The Arch Wiki is an invaluable tool for every distribution.
  • Ask your questions. There will be dickheads, but most people will be happy to help.
rtxn,

Is that really an issue, though? My entire install is only 38GB (not including swap), and I’ve never even gotten close to filling the root partition.

If you really want to, you could mount the HDD to /usr or make symlinks pointing to a directory on the HDD.

rtxn,

Take a look at this, might be interesting: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Overlay_filesystem

rtxn, (edited )

I wouldn’t worry too much about SSD wear. It’s not nearly as big an issue for PCs, and wear balancing can stretch that ~10000-write lifetime to many years, especially if most of the SSD is empty. I bought my oldest SSD around 2015 and it still works perfectly. SMART barely reports any errors.

If you want frequently written files to be on the HDD, start with /var, /run, and ~/.cache. Those files are likely far bigger contributors to wear than anything inside /usr.

rtxn,

x11vnc -find will find the first X desktop session and start a server on the first available port starting at 5900. By default, it’ll accept a single connection from any address. The server stops when the client disconnects unless the -forever option is set.

You can send the user a script with all required options already set, or start it remotely through SSH.

rtxn,

Read the article. The jail can provide vegetarian, but not vegan.

Jail isn’t fun.

rtxn,

Bread, PB, and water is a perfectly fine meal. That shit was a delicacy when I was a kid in post-soviet Europe.

Besides, he’s in jail because he fucked up his bond. He’s not there to have a good time.

rtxn,

How is this torture? He isn’t starving, and he doesn’t have to eat gross or questionable food. If a vegan diet was a medical requirement, both his lawyers and the media would’ve milked it dry, but they didn’t, which tells me that vegan food is only a preference.

rtxn,

It’s not a punishment. Jail is the result of alleged bond violation through witness tampering. The same meal that every other prisoner eats there is made available to him. He’s not deprived of nutrition. If there was a medical reason that requires a vegan diet (like the prescribed adderall), don’t you think his lawyers and the media would be crying about it? No, his veganism is most likely a lifestyle choice. Still on nutrition - he may dislike it, but he can survive on boring food.

rtxn,

This isn’t punishment yet. Not for his financial crimes anyway. He’s being held because he allegedly violated his bond through witness tampering and because he can’t stop flapping his mouth to the media. The judge has an obligation to preserve the court’s integrity throughout the case, for both the plaintiff and the defendant, and that means limiting the defendant’s freedom.

Yes, this is just a bunch of widgets. It’s running inside Hyprland with its own keybindings, and I have a topbar (also eww) that has all of the workspace, system monitor, and eye candy widgets; I just killed it for the screenshot since it’s not relevant to the topic of the Starfield main menu.

I’m pretty sure it would work in other WMs/DEs, and even on X11.

rtxn,

I hope Mark Kern is remembered for being a dipshit.

rtxn,

“This video about garbage days in Amsterdam looks interesting. I sure hope it doesn’t send me down any rabbit hole.”

rtxn,

I bought BG3 on Steam and Divinity Original Sin 2 (previous Larian game) on GOG, running it through Lutris. They both have the same quirks, but work perfectly on Linux (Arch, GE-Proton, RTX 2060 Super with proprietary driver).

The one serious issue I’ve seen is flickering when the game window is not focused. Using Gamescope fixed it completely, it’s a simple toggle in Lutris and a wrapper in Heroic.

rtxn,

That depends on the UX/UI developers. When the app tries to be smart and make every interaction a conversation, I immediately want to abandon it. Linux is spoiling me with its user-friendly “do what I tell you” philosophy.

rtxn,

We’re busy criticizing Apple as a whole.

rtxn,

One of my teeth became loose. When I pulled it out, a significant part of my upper jaw came off with it. It fucked up my entire day.

rtxn,

Someone’s put a fork bomb in their .bashrc and you were summoned to fix it on a running system.

rtxn,

Is it possible to disable pict-rs and direct media uploads to the instance? Would the operators be willing to do it and rely entirely on third-party hosting?

He doesn’t like competition, especially at being fucking dim.

Does rarbg_db.sqlite count?

rtxn,

The way he holds the laptop is a sign of how he’s given up on life, society, and the world at large.

rtxn,

I need someone to give me context or so help me god

rtxn,

That is fucking clean, no way it wasn’t scripted.

Still, worthy of applause. It’s like the church bells and cannons at the end of the 1812 Overture.

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

rtxn,

I have zero notifications enabled and use the sub list exclusively (about to switch to RSS), although I’m probably an outlier since I have a habit of sacrificing comfort just to stick it to big tech.

rtxn,

Not even worth copying the info hash.

rtxn,

A few days after the API changes were announced, a massive number of old-reddit pages were archived. Technically-minded people should have no issue finding the original comments.

rtxn,

Trademark, not copyright. It means that you can’t make something and call it “X” if there’s any chance that your “X” and their “X” might get mixed up. Google ran into this same problem when they created “Alphabet” - it was already a trademark of some German car manufacturer (probably Audi or BMW), but the court ruled that “Alphabet the car company” and “Alphabet the online services company” are far enough apart that the average user probably won’t confuse one for the other (although the Dove soap and Dove chocolate makes me doubt it). Twitter and Microsoft both offer online services. It might be enough of an overlap to constitute a trademark violation.

rtxn,

My stupid fucking brain read “Aussie” and immediately concluded that this must’ve happened in the ass crack middle of nowhere.

"Block The Rich" is like an ad-blocker, but for obscenely wealthy people with overinflated egos. (lemm.ee)

About 8 months ago I got pretty tired of seeing billionaire spam online. I could not bear to read about yet another rich guy who launched themselves (or their $200,000 car) into outer space 🚀 . I did not care about their expert opinion on the latest meme coin back then. I do not care about their expert opinion on the dangers...

rtxn,

My only request would be to have a version that not just blurs the parts but completely removes the DOM elements where they are mentioned.

rtxn,

“We know these power lines are in a dangerous location (as confirmed by three concerned engineers who approached us independently of each other), and are likely to injure or kill people if they sag too far in the summer heat, but the state legislation hasn’t been updated since the '40s when the lines only carried a fraction of today’s amperage, so we’re legally in the clear.”

rtxn,

Why is RISC-V significant? I’m completely out of the loop and have only heard of it in passing.

rtxn,

Well, it’s a good thing I switched to Wayland.

rtxn,

I still consider Falcon 9 to be a good thing that he made possible by funding its development and manufacturing. It’s given small companies and scientific organizations affordable access to space, and created actual competition in the small satellite launch business. It certainly inspired other companies, like Rocket Lab and Astra, to develop low-cost orbital launch and sounding rockets.

But then, all of his other anti-society things combined with him having turned into a borderline fascist moron… the scale just doesn’t level out.

rtxn,

Yes, the wording was very deliberate. Has to be when the subject isn’t entirely good or entirely evil.

rtxn,

Loki, after rolling 1 for persuasion: “Well, you see, actually, my neck is not part of my head… so you can’t behead me… without cutting my neck…”

The DM, absolutely fed up: “Roll 1d1 to sew your fucking mouth shut.”

rtxn,

You reboot the satellite, then it hits you with /sbin/init does not exist. Bailing out, you are on your own now. Good luck.
