It’s the UI setup. All DE/WM combinations are, and have been, factually inferior to Windows Explorer in terms of optimization, clarity and animation.

Which may or may not be because of their excessively modular structure and fractured development. Each layer has its own opinionated dev team unlike in Microsoft or Apple, where it’s all synchronised and everyone across the board have (at least at the time of development) a clear vision of the product they want to make.

Isn’t vanilla KDE Plasma faster and less resource-intensive than Cinnamon?

The Mint devs present the XFCE option as a “more lightweight” alternative to the Cinnamon option, and Plasma has been more efficient than XFCE for over three years now.

After literally 6 complete playthroughs, I am tired now. I really doubt they can keep adding much more to keep me hooked, just retire the thing and focus on future projects already.

My backlog is so large, I’m definitely going to die before getting through it.

Don’t call it that, man! games are an escape, a leisure activity. Not some work assignment you need to compulsively finish. It’s OK if you don’t play everything there is. 🙂

It’s almost exactly like AC:Unity if you’ve played it, just with a different world (similar to Origins’ “middle-east yellow” aesthetic), boring story and uglier cutscenes.

How far would you go to conform for something as mundane as chat bubble colors? How soulless will your life have to be to demand something like this?

All these features you get much better using actual E2E-encrypted chat apps like Signal or WhatsApp like the rest of the world.

WhatsApp does not come pre-installed on most phones (for some reason it often isn’t included even with Facebook’s crapware). It is still the de facto chat app in India, Brazil and dozens of other Asian, South American and European countries.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

SMS has been free in India since 2016. Though one could say WhatsApp had already become dominant by then, so it stuck.

It’s because Apple users are high-grade consoomers who click and engage with a lot more ads on average than Android users.

Of course it’s worth it to get hands on the most succulent customer segment out there.

They also locked it behind Edge or the official “Bing app” on mobile. You can no longer just try out Bing Chat from the browser.

Unironically true, to tweak for performance the first thing would be to remove bloat, which you can’t expect from MS.

Are there any popular and well-maintained dotfiles for Arch Linux that come with a solid installation process?

After recently installing a new system, I had a rude awakening when I realized I’d been tinkering with broken dotfiles for over a year. It’s time to simplify things. I’m considering adopting popular dotfiles with established installation processes and leaving my existing setup behind, transferring essential configurations...

Yep. I wanted to mention Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series but it already has a stellar GraphicAudio adaptation.

All the biggest tech/IT consulting firms that used to hire engineering college freshers by the millions each year have declared they either won’t be recruiting at all this month, or will only be recruiting for senior positions. If AI were to wipe out humanity it’ll probably be through unemployment-related poverty thanks to our incompetent policymakers.

While WSL2 has a better overall performance than its predecessor, it’s known for hogging a lot of memory. WSL’s read and write times also take a hit if you try to modify or save documents to the Windows file system.

What!?

I wish Ars handed over coverage of Android to a person who wasn’t this unabashedly hostile against it and Google. These same people claim “revolutionary” changes when Apple so much as modifies one bit of the iPhone’s layout.

Yup. Please, please don’t drink too much regardless of how drunk or not it gets you. Alcohol is never good for your body.

What competitive shooter has come out before that has completely destructible environments?

You say this is “just another competitive shooter” out of a pile and that the industry is stagnated. I’m asking who made something like this before for you to come to that conclusion

Random thought: Windows is largely successful because of Piracy

Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Windows and Office were successful in enterprises precisely because they were popular and the familiar choice among staff. They got popular from piracy.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

How do those companies audit businesses that they don’t know are using their software? Do they have a special force built just to track creative releases from indie makers?

In most countries other than those in Western Europe, North America, Japan and China, computers arrived roughly a decade late. In fact PCs never ended up being used in the mainstream till the late 90’s/early '00s in India, a lot of options had matured by then.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The past 20 years is what’s relevant for all countries apart from Japan, China and those in North America and Eastern Europe when it comes to PCs.

I don’t think any cost above ₹200 (~ $2.5) would have been justifiable for an OS in third world countries in the '00s, and the “dirt cheap CD keys” were certainly more expensive than that anywhere.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Linux’s development would have accelerated a lot had there been more demand. There wasn’t enough demand because pirated Windows was getting the work done.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s hilarious that you think Microsoft’s charity is what brought computers to the third world. Do you even hear yourself?

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Unbelievable. You genuinely think the rest of the world wouldn’t have had computers had your god Microsoft not been so benevolent as to donate a few machines to a few schools for PR

Stay happy in your pathetic white saviours’ world, I guess. There’s no point discussing anything with you

PSA, FitGirl and Dodi setups do fail during installations on Proton and Lutris Wine, but if you were to run them using vanilla Wine they (generally) work perfectly. Just open a terminal in the downloaded folder and enter wine ./setup.exe. Just make sure you set the correct installation folder (e.g. Z:/home/username/games)

Update: the latest FitGirl setup for Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t work on either

Gaming. Frame rates on Wayland are horrible as compared to on X11

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Even the FPS monitor numbers show the same but there is visible lag when playing on wayland as against X11 (you’ll perhaps need a side-by-side comparison to notice). This isn’t just my observation, it’s well-known in the linux gaming community

TL;DR

Larian/BG3 is bold enough to make player choices matter to the extent that several paths and entire storylines in the game get locked out based on your decisions. Bethesda (and literally any other developer) is not. They’d rather you not miss everything they’ve taken the effort of building in the game.

people_are_cute,
@people_are_cute@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not to this extent is the key here. He explained it better in the article.

The game has such awesome visuals and detailing, and the story has so many great characters and moments, but the overall plot in the end fails to establish any kind of hope or stakes to get behind. The whole world is fucked, the protagonist is doomed, there are no good endings and everything is depressing. If only they could’ve dialled down on the nihilism and made the CP2077 universe a bit more fun, its story could have gone down as among the most iconic ones in the industry. Video games are meant to be an escape and nobody wants to be the loser at the end. It’s a medium where bad endings just don’t work.
