Same! I miss being able to use it for swipe actions like I could on my note 9 a few years ago too…

nlm,

For me it’s mainly a nice backup for when the Xbox or TV is occupied by someone else. I don’t think I’d use it as my prime source of gaming. It works but it’s not quite as good as the actual playing on your own hardware.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Saw that, isn’t it strange to never have seen that from any other app then?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Everyone seemed to hype it up as the best sci fi ever so it might just have been the hype that did it.

I thought it was a decent book but nothing really special. It just wasn’t all that interesting to me. It didn’t make me want to read the sequels.

A High Priority for Moving Away from Lemmy

Several months ago Beehaw received a report about CSAM (i.e. Child Sexual Abuse Material). As an admin, I had to investigate this in order to verify and take the next steps. This was the first time in my life that I had ever seen images such as these. Not to go into great detail, but the images were of a very young child...

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Sorry to hear that mate! That’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve never wanted to move towards IT forensics even though I think I’d enjoy the actual work. But having to regularly sift through the absolute worst humanity has to offer sounds awful.

Hope the immediate pain of it settles as soon as possible!

This might not be what people want but since beehaw is going to leave Lemmy anyway, couldn’t you just completely defederate and run as an isolated instance? Then you’d have control of what her life gets published without having to deal with federated nastiness?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, turning off images wouldn’t be too bad either. If people want to post inages you can just as easily upload them somewhere else and link them.

I don’t really know. Too many for me to bother counting them but probably in the high hundreds. In our living room we’ve got four or five meters worth of book shelves that are completely filled up and the overflow has started piling up in other rooms.

So at least a bunch :)

Really looking forward to this… been itching for a new playthrough for quite some time now but saving it for the traverse day.

Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here

Yesterday, you probably saw this informal post by one of our head admins (Chris Remington). This post lamented some of the difficulties we’re running into with the site at this point, and what the future might hold for us. This is a more formal post about those difficulties and the way we currently see things....

I’d rather not see Beehaw split from Lemmy but if you feel you have to then I for one wouldn’t mind seeing it using a phpbb board.

Glory to the old forums! /old grumpy mode

I know I’ve ended up more of a lurker lately. That’s not due to any particular ill feelings about beehaw or lemmy at large though. I think I just entered a bit more passive, consuming phase. Maybe falling back a bit to the old reddit habits? Mostly browsing for interesting new things.

Anyway.

This is probably due to me discovering Beehaw and Lemmy at the same time, but for me they’re probably a lot more connected than I’m guessing they are for you old timers.

For me it’s like… the cozy corner of Lemmy you know? My home base while venturing out to other instances’ communities. I’m definitely most likely to actually post or comment around here just because I like it here (though not exclusively however).

So… now this place will most likely go dark in a while. What then?

This won’t and can’t be my home base by then and that’s making me feel like… should I start looking for a new home already?

Anything I produce with this account will either go go away or at least be locked down. Nor sure what happens to the federated copies of comments and posts on other communities when an instance shuts down.

So… I don’t know. It’s starting to feel a bit like this account is nearing its end of life which makes it feel a bit odd to be actively using it.

A bit like chalk on the sidewalk while watching rain clouds come rolling in.

I… don’t know what my point is really.

I guess it feels a bit like it’s time to start cultivating a new account, mirror my subscriptions and start using that instead, even for posting here. I don’t know.

Anyone else feel something similar?

Looks pretty nice tbh! Probably going to stick to my current phone a few more years until it stops being updated but if I manage to break it this might just be the replacement.

[solved] Any multiline zsh compatible shells? [zsh config]

Some time ago I found xonsh which is a python-based shell. It had really good multiline support, and I am searching for a shell with sameish multiline support as xonsh. Fish shell also has good multiline support, it is around the same level, but it is not posix compatible. I want a shell that has that kind of level of multiline,...

I’ve spent ages on phpBB and I do kind of miss out to be honest.

It might just be nostalgia talking though because I can’t really say exactly what I’m missing about it.

Might just be the old communities that used it.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Midnight commander is a pretty nice alternative!

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

That sounded scary at first!

You guys are doing great, all of you!

And yeah, that was a risky move, a good one in hindsight, but still has to be scary?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

I’ve had similar feelings towards Lemmy as a whole lately too. Maybe I need to play a bit with my sorting settings but it’s starting to feel like the vast majority of posts on all my subscribed communities are linked posts without any extra info added.

Sure the titles themselves might be self explanatory but I’d expect the poster to actually also write something about the link they’ve posted. What did they think about it, what do they want to discuss about it.

Is just feels… hollow? When you see link after link with not even an effort towards discussion from the poster.

It’s starting to feel like I’m using an RSS reader.

Not sure what too do about it though. Require more text to be written for each link post? That might just end up with some copy pasting I suppose but it might be worth a shot?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah I wouldn’t need a novel either but just a link and nothing else feels… boring?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

I guess… i just wish it was more than mostly a link aggregator though.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

As always, thank you for your transparency! <3

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Looked like ads at first. Gave me a slight cyberpunk vibe for some reason. At least big corpo dystopia.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Sorry to hear you’re having a rough time!

My week’s been good. Finally started my four week vacation time. Feels so good, though we don’t seem to be getting any of that heat that the rest of the world is suffering under. It’s been somewhat chilly and absolutely pouring outside almost 24/7 for a while now.

Wish it could be at least dry and somewhat warm. Still so nice to be off work though!

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Sounds promising!

I loved the setting of Origins but got burnt out doing all the tedious bits they sprinkled all over the maps that didn’t contribute to the story in ant way and was mostly the same over and over again.

And yes, I know I could skip stuff but I wanted to experience the full hame too… so… yeah.

It definitely could’ve been trimmed down a bit.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, it really can’t be that hard to show a saving indicator…

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, quick resume on xbox as well and that’s great, most modern games use it. Not all though and not on PC.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Autosaves are great and all… I just want to be able to quit whenever. There’s usually a confirmation when you’re trying to quit anyway. Just save and quit then. :P

I’m glad at least some games still allow you to do that.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, good point and that’s a valid reason I suppose.

It’s still very nice when you have more flexibility.

Wish PC games could implement something like the xbox quick resume or something.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Some games seem to manage it quite well though? But yeah, they probably had to pit a lot more energy into implementing it.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Save states would be nice. Just dump the game’s data from ram to disk.

That would probably take up a ton of space though. :)

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

I’d never play that on PC. It would work on xbox though since quick resume just let’s ju pop out to the dashboard and resume whenever. It’s not foolproof but I’ve only had to restart from a checkpoint a few times.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Wonder is Valve could implement that on windows as well?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Yes!

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

That would be awesome, I hope they can do it!

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Ugh… I wish more developers kept their customers engaged by making good games instead of creating some meta game to keep the hamster wheel running. That feels like a lot of MMO’s…

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

True but that won’t help with many modern games.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Pretty much this. And if they’re worried about that just make it so you can only save and quit?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Very much so! For the longest time I had a xerox of some gaming magazine with all the save codes for Lemmings!

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Meh, annoying save systems won’t stop me for buying an otherwise great game but it will somewhat bug me while playing.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

You can still have checkpoints and auto saves at intervals. That way you can reload if you save a second before dying or whatever.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Well of course. There’s always room for improvement though.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

I do use that. I have a Series X but I play on PC as well. Some games aren’t available on xbox and sometimes the TV might be occupied or I might want to squeeze in some quick gaming while already at my desk.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Really? Any idea how?

Display name character limit?

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been trying to add my pronouns to my display name, so that it appears as “YourHeroes4Ghosts (she/her)”. I’ve changed it in settings and saved, many times, but it doesn’t appear to be changing on my posts and comments. Is this because of a character limit, or is there some other issue?

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

Pretty sure the current limit is 20 characters. I hit that wall as well when I tried setting my wanted display name.

nlm,
@nlm@beehaw.org avatar

I never really managed to get into NV. I really should give it another try soon. I loved 1,2 and 3. Played 4 a bit but lost interest after a while.

I think it’s the whole western vibe that NV has going on that put me off.

Might have to install it again and put some serious hours into it to see if I manage to get hooked.
