You don’t need to pay a subscription fee for cloud storage when it’s super simple to host your own, and Android allows the mounting of different filesystems too.

SMB on a rasp pi + cheapo storage + Tailscale, all the way to paying £$€ for a dedicated NAS enclosure with as much storage as you can afford also with Tailscale?

Yup, fuck subscription fees.

You also can then use the corporate cloud storage providers like G/ProtonDrive etc to use their free offerings for off site backup of the most important data.

Hey John.

I’m sorry, but we’ve had to remove this post and you’re better trying in the dedicated community over in !askandroid

Cheers!

Just be aware with Xiaomi phones that you might be restricted for certain things.

You can’t unlock without setting up a Xiaomi account that includes, from memory, your email address, phone number, and date of birth.

Your memory really is not great, and you can use throwaway emails to deal with registering/receiving codes from them.

You’re using sleep as android

OP could’ve changed the settings according to the docs to repeat backup alarms with that app :)

docs.sleep.urbandroid.org/alarms/backup.html

RIP their neighbour.

Fun tidbit? I have a Cubot King Kong Pro (yes, it’s called that) which has the old Nokia feature of actually turning the phone on if its off to sound a scheduled alarm. I left my Cubot in my locker at work and it wasn’t until I got back in a week or so later did my locker neighbour tell me about my locker, making funny sounds…I have “Fuck You Mr Garrison” as one of my alarm tones.

Ooops.

New phone with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus: should I still buy a screen protector? (www.corning.com)

Basically the title, I received a new price with a significant price tag (at least for me). My previous ones I didn’t care much so they weren’t protected. Given that I’d like to keep this one in good shape I’d like to know your experiences: does it still make sense to buy screen protectors nowadays? If so, also on newer...

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

The main thing about having a screen protector to me is it having a bonus oleophobic coating besides the one that comes with your phone (and gets worn off with shit like hand sanitizer).

That means I can just chuck another one on when it eventually turns to shit and / or I wanna sell / give the phone away and I wouldn’t worry too much about “brands”.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

How long have you had your S7?

That must be knocking on a bit now, and to be honest you could save yourself some wonga but still enjoy an upgraded experience even with some older…ish Android phones.

Which brings me to another question. Is Samsung the only OEM you’re looking at, because there’re some pretty good deals from others such as Moto/Xiaomi/Sony etc?

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think it’s bloody excellent in both that you’ve had that phone so long, and now have the mindset to shop in advance for something to buy outright (I hate contract phones) for something that will see you right again for hopefully as long again.

Each OEM has their ups and downs, and what I’d do is watch some YT reviews from reputable peeps like MrMobile whilst then loading up GSMarena’s phone compare tool to check the specs of devices that take your fancy, and then hit up eBay/Swappa etc to see what after sale prices are like to determine if owners devices are holding their price (cheap after prices = poopeyer phone?) but also showing if people are keeping them… because they just work without complaint. Just like your S7 for the past 7 years 👌

Good stuff, and happy phone shopping you ;)

@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

You can’t get rid of Whatsapp.

Very true, but you can also never ever give them your number and then get funny looks from friends, colleagues, and pretty much everyone in the UK.

I for one am proud of getting those funny looks.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

It is an option, believe me, you’re just doing what your employer tells you to.

But they can’t force you to use WhatsApp unless you signed a contract of employment stating so? And if you did that the onus falls on you.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

And that’s why if I was self employed I’d use another phone entirely or promote the usage of some other way of contacting me/us. Never would I have WhatsApp installed on my personal device (Dual SIM and all) since it’s my choice, which I can make.

Peer pressure, social norms, and even “bosses demanding you join their WhatsApp to communicate” is a non starter here.

I think it annoys my immediate boss that I use our corporate email for everything, or even simply calling them telling them the most menial of things.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

That’s the thing…I do understand your qualms about having to use them even if it irks you no end because you’re ‘now not a weirdo’, and having run establishments prior to these days I find it amusing that you’re now required to indulge in sharing your contact list because it’s the “norm”.

Which is awesome because I somehow manage to keep in touch with fellow friends, colleagues, family and even talking to others on platforms such as this without conglomerates poking my metadata too as much.

edit: too > as

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

And I’m conveying your blind spot which seems to be that you can’t function in this society without WhatsApp, which I’ve done since its inception.

And I’m sure I will perform equally well as yourself and others going into the future without it.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Messaging others is not “social media”, and you conflating that with using a messaging app is fairly telling.

I don’t intend to nor use iMessage.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

You can do a few of the shake gestures with Tasker actually, but Moto gestures generally require some fiddling about with the ROM itself and isn’t something Lineage offers out of the box AFAIK.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Obvious elephant in the room is some of these mobile environments are stigmatized by the need for “security” and taking away the freedom of what a desktop OS offers.

The very best example is the background playback of audio on a website called YouTube.com.

Why you can’t play things in the background (yes, I have Kiwi etc and can do this) on mobile is very very telling, and will only get more restrictive.

Lemmy Development Update 2023-09-22

Some years ago we used to post weekly development updates to let the community know what we are working on. For some reason we stopped posting these updates, but now we want to continue giving you information every two weeks about the recent development progress. This should allow average users to keep up with development,...

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

but I have nothing against the users.

Absolutely, and in 12+ years of using reddit the only accounts funnily enough I’ve had to block are admin accounts, and I liken the above to users from other subreddits being able to able to interact in other subs until they either

  • get banned by the sub /c/ mods
  • individual users using the block function

Tarring users from instances is like using that SaferBot bullshit which I’ve never liked.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Exactly, and the way it work(ed) on reddit was a non-plus from the start, especially if you modded moderately large subs hence me never blocking anyone other than those annoying accounts.

The art of ignoring is key ;)

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Why not, post something here that’s like you say pretty niche and generates discussion about it?

If it wasn’t posted here I wouldn’t have heard about it and why I subscribe to such places for news on these devices.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I’ve used Neo Launcher ever since that Nova crap came about, and actually had to just double check I was using Neo still since it just…works as my Launcher?

Which brings me onto another point which always made me curious people who used to say that using Live Wallpapers saying it decimates your battery life and well, it probably would if you spent all day looking at it, but then I got thinking how much time do I spend looking at my home/Launcher screen :thinkyface:

Turns out, not much.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

That sounds like your /efs partition has been corrupted / wiped.

And, if you didn’t backup said partition before tinkering you’re screwed.

Sorry.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

That’s just bait asking to be stolen.

ladfrombrad,

(Galnet) MIUI at one point used to be the ROM to install back in the day.

Now, typing from this Mi 11 meme it’s a whole different kettle of fish. Security app is what I would call snake oil leaning for towards spyware, then all the other uninstallable apps from MIUI are tracking apps / dupes.

To be honest though being able to uninstall YouTube should be a given but Google won’t allow that either, even though it’s a “website”.

ladfrombrad,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Not only security implications, it’s also the time sink and apps crying about Safetynet being unable to be passed I find the Pihole + browser extensions / Tampermonkey etc somewhat of a sweet compromise.

I keep getting nagged by someone to try either AdGuard or NextDNS on my Pi but also…lazy/busy at work :(

    Another Xiaomi (M11 Lite) owner here and when I seen your post last night I checked my average temps and even now, while I’m fast charging it it generally never gets much hotter than the ambient temperature (~25°) during normal use. And like someone else said using a slow charger wouldn’t see mine go up to 30°+ whilst charging.

    Hazard a guess, those users are on Android 7 or less and as per the description of the Play Store listing

    If your device is running Android 7 or an earlier version, it will not receive an update for this app. This app may indicate that it is not compatible with your device, but this does not mean that the app is malfunctioning or causing your device to malfunction.

    This is making them take to the Play Store perhaps? Thing is, the app is showing last updated in Feb 2023 for me so, I dunno.

    I use FlowX (formerly Weather bomb).

    Might not be the prettiest of apps but sure gives up lots of data from different sources, and someone else said I like the radar aspect of it.

    ladfrombrad,
    @ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

    It’s simply being able to swipe up/down/left/right on the radar to scan the different factors of weather coming it, especially when I’m going to work.

    I work outside all day long but also travel to work on an escooter too so knowing if it’s gonna be windy/pissing it down or, sunny (UK here, this is rare) factors in how I arrive by foot/scoot and what I need to wear that day.

    ladfrombrad,
    @ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

    Technically, you can actually by changing this developer setting

    i.imgur.com/nMQuwOR.jpg

    If your screen never turns off whilst charging then fixed it, right?

    …runs away. 😇

    ladfrombrad,
    @ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

    Yeah I’m just been a little tongue in cheek and keeping your screen active would probably make Greta mad and possibly lead to burn in on your screen.

    Both of these are undesirable, and there might be something out there for ya. Gotta ask, why, do you want this specifically?

    Like I unplug maybe once a day so it’s not an issue here, but curious why it’s irking you?

    is anyone else bothered by the lack of the 3 buttons at the bottom

    So i just bought Asus rog phone 6d and im extremely bothered by the lack of the back ,home and whatewer is the 3 one called buttons on the news androids. Is this something you all got used to with time or does this still bother you( IT really fells much less intuitive compared to the old 3 buttons ,alghtough preferably i would...

    ladfrombrad,
    @ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

    Yeah, I’m lucky that I have the option of both gesture or three button nav of which, I still use the latter because it’s better for me.

    I was big on gestures back in the day with LMT and something I’ve found with MiuiOS is they now have that with Quick Ball as it’s called. It’s ace, and also a bit like AOSP Browser side gestures which I also used to use.

    Further, slightly off topic ranting? Yes, where I work they currently have an obsession with installing touchscreens on HMI panels to control machinery. Problem is the touch resolution on them is dogshit so peeps end up start trying to use with them with their pens etc and physically damage the screen.

    Before these touchscreen “interfaces”, we had nice IP68 physical buttons on a Siemens panel that did the very same functions. Sickens me how much they cost for a lower quality interface.

    I’d also check out some of the dedicated Sun Locator apps

    play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andymst…

    Wasn’t this one I used prior trying to figure out if some solar powered LED lights I’d bought for someone’s back yard would work, but it did help me figure out that they’d have never have got enough sunlight to power them and instead gave them away to someone else with a much more lit place :/

    It’s an interesting question this and whether Samsung is willing to use GSI’s / DSU.

    Last time I checked that was a negative?

    ladfrombrad,
    @ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

    …deep grumbly sounds…

    Problem with highly specialised and niche communities is you always run foul of having too many Help Vampires and, from my scant playing with my cheapo Chromebook and others asking about how it runs / does it play games (no, it doesn’t have an accelerometer) etc I’d be cautious.

    For example having c/Apple is great but when you get down to c/iOS that’s when you see moar Vampires + screenshots of issues and you know my thoughts on those…

    c/askApple + c/AskPleaseSendHelpRiteNAO

    Should be noted it’s fairly simple to do this on any Android phone with Tasker.

    Profile > Event > Sensor > Shake Left-Right > task=torch toggle

    Tasks > Alert > Torch > Set Toggle > task - torch toggle
