This is one area where Apple has it pretty right. A Mac will do somethings when ‘asleep’ like download emails and texts. It also can broadcast its location if the ‘Find Me’ function is on. If it’s plugged into power then backups will also run, and background app updates will happen. It does this in a low power mode, so it won’t get hot enough to need fans. It’s worked flawlessly for 20 years. Meanwhile all our PCs are set to ‘never sleep’ and just get shutdown when not in use. I never trust a PC laptop to wake successfully from sleep just by closing the lid.

It’s not even quite that - the article suggested they raised the commercial equivalent of the 12% through competitive auction. These allow the bidders a set price over 20 years.

So it’s cheaper than buying in fossil fuels, the suppliers get certainty, and they achieve close to complete decarbonisation using private investment.

How good is that?

Checking sources twice is something you should do from a news agency that is actually reputable. As in it trades on being honest and accurate.

You’re not obliged to read everything from an outlet that has no track record of honesty and integrity simply because you’ve been beaten around the head with the internet ‘logical fallacy’ meme one too many times.

Thinking that everything you read on the internet should be worth your time to fact check is the ultimate logical fallacy.

Well, they were significantly more secure by default than Windows due to various design measures including the separation of user land. And old OS9 was friggin brilliant for a web facing machine back in the day.

I’ve found Soundcloud to be a great alternative for this. Loads and loads of 1-2 hour mixes, and great exposure to a whole range of new music. Only issue is that some of (what I enjoy anyway), seems to have very limited releases and isn’t necessarily available on Apple Music/etc.

Is Google having a total breakdown right now???

So, I’m sure we all know about the WEI thing at this point, which is bad and weird enough; and also the sudden move to block ad-blockers on YouTube. I don’t know how that’s going to work out, but it’s pretty irritating. Not to mention, going to the gym, coming home, and suddenly getting loads of fitness-related ads piled...

I know I’ll be in the minority, but I really enjoyed Homeworld Cataclysm the most. It didn’t have the fuel mechanic which made the original a bit tedious, and it had the much improved HUD. I recall the story pacing being great too. I’m not sure if it’s in this bundle though.

Yes, there are things you can and should be doing.

People blaming ‘corporations’ while not doing anything themselves are a huge part of the problem. Out of the 100 largest corporations contributing the most CO2, almost all of them are fuel and energy based.

So, number one - drives less, or don’t drive at all. This might change where or how you live.

Number 2, buy 100% green power or install your own PV.

These 2 things alone can be contributing up to 50% of your own greenhouse emissions. This isn’t ‘corporations’, it’s us buying power and driving around.

After that everyday consumption is huge. So don’t buy shit to just throw it away. Only buy what’s necessary. Spend more on fewer things, and things that will last.

And finally, do these things because you care. If enough people make some changes. It starts to seem normal. Then others do it too. And vote.

The number of smart, tech savvy people here who think some boats and random companies are the source of impending catastrophe are sadly mistaken. The actual information on what’s causing and contributing is well researched and easy to find. You’ll be able to find an online calculator for your country which will give an averaged breakdown of your own emissions. You can use that to keep drilling into what actions will have the biggest impacts.

Everyone needs to make changes to the way we live. Some need to go first for others to follow.

Apple’s business isn’t built around advertising. That’s literally the biggest reason is better to use than any google product.

If you need a level of privacy that goes beyond even Apple’s abstraction of location data, then you’re best off not connecting a smart phone to a car at all, and using offline maps.

What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

Have you ever played a game and wondered what if you could do something that it doesn’t really allow you to do, for example being able to move around blocks in Minecraft fluidly instead of in sectors, edit the world in Hogwarts legacy with spells, be able to fly in a world like Elden Ring or Elder Scrolls with epic sky...

It’s not historical, but you can play Eve and get all this. The economy is almost entirely player driven, and is tied into industry and logistics - also all entirely player driven. Prices and demand shift, and of course you can also scam people out of everything if you want.

You can be one of the most successful players and not ever fire a shot.

The old Slashdot obsession of calling out logical fallacies lead to the hyper normalisation of climate change denial. We had a whole load of really smart people who were very quick to call out any appeal to authority (of, you know, actual climate scientists), but a bit too lazy to read the source material themselves.

I thought the Foundation books were conceited and trite - I know that’s not going to make me popular here. The first ATV season was pretty damn good, building on the main themes that made the books so seminal, but adding a human dimension which helps to make the story feel as epic as people make it out to be.

It would be nice to have curtains that absorb street noise.

Some custom curtain tailors offer a fabric that claims to be soundproof. It’s a little pricey. Not absurdly pricey, but it’s also a bit hard to be confident that such thin fabrics can absorb much sound (they claim 20%).

I would prefer to try hacks. I’ve heard that thick furniture moving pads absorb sound well. I’ve also heard that fiberous fabrics can be effective. For the moment, I probably want to pass on edgy ideas like egg cartons. Maybe later on those. What fabrics are decent for reducing sound? Specifically, I’m wondering about carpets or painter’s drop cloths. Not the simple white canvas drop cloths, but the thicker drop cloths may out of recycled fabrics.

There’s a few things at play with noise, and unfortunately there’s no easy answer to your issue.

Easiest and best bang-for-buck: seal your windows up tight. If there’s little gaps for vents, the window doesn’t close tight, or things like that, they will leak noise.

Most effective: replace windows with solid frames or insulation packed extrusions, double glazing using laminated glass, and make the inside pane a soundstop type of glass. Make sure any opening windows have seals.

The curtains probably help with some very high pitched sounds, and there may also be a placebo effect at play, but they’re going to do bugger all I’m afraid. Noise is just vibrating mass, and it’s harder to transmit vibrations through dense mass. So yes, a curtain is better than nothing, but relative to your glass and walls it’s closer to air.

If noise is an issue for sleeping, the very best thing to do before shelling out loads of money on snake oil curtains is to try a few different ear plugs.

Off topic, but can I ask how & what about the anxiety meds? I deal with it all but it’s exhausting sometimes. The last time o spoke to a GP about it (5 years ago) they talked me out of taking things any further because of impacts to insurance/etc.

Nice theory but it doesn’t hold up very well. Both Canada and Australia are enormous countries that are both well functioning democracies.

There are a number of great sources that describe the conditions for good democracies - and intolerance of corruption is a vital condition. That’s something that has never really been taken seriously in Russia, so in some ways it’s no surprise it’s come to this.
