mhz,

Thanks for clarifying, I’m also considering migrating from lemmy.world and I’m considering lemm.ee, would you recommend that for someone located in north africa (Morocco)? Will i get latency problems? My last concern is should I worry about it degenerating (i still dont get exactly how instances work)?

mhz, (edited )

Thanks for being a nice neighbor.

Avoid anything alcoholic and all kind of meat except seafood. If it has to be food consider fruits or dried fruits (dates, almond, nuts…), honey and olive oil are also among guifts we give in my area (Morocco). A nice box of dates is my favorite or a game/toy for their toddler/child if they have any.

mhz,

They certainly dont like competition, especially if competition does not follow their agendas.

mhz,

Then come the update/reboot cycles, the drivers then fetching your softwares from their genuine websites and installing them.

Looks like a guide for the living to the afterlife

Steam On Linux Usage Spikes To Nearly 2% In July, Larger Marketshare Than Apple macOS (www.phoronix.com)

According to these new numbers from Valve, the Linux customer base is up to 1.96%, or a 0.52% jump over June! That’s a huge jump with normally just moving 0.1% or so in either direction most months… It’s also near an all-time high on a percentage basis going back to the early days of Steam on Linux when it had around a 2%...

mhz,

I think enabling steam compatibility for all titles do exactly that?

mhz,

Damn, I jealous. I hope my country start investing in non-xar centric progress soon.

mhz,

In my country (Morocco)

  • Red/white curbs: No parking, usually found in intersection where parking could block the view from other drivers.
  • Straight continuous line by the curb: Not allowed to stop there (say for a quick errand)
  • Straight or double continuous straight lines in the middle: Not allowed to do a “U” turn. Generally, Straight lines should not be crossed.

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

mhz,

That is how i use youtube, but now it is poisined with those crappy shorts. They are changing youtube into tiktok

mhz,

I hope they would find a way to minimize fragmantation, instead of having one well maintained (lest’s say) ABC community we now have an ABC community per instance ([email protected], [email protected], abc@kbin,…) with one half active and the rest barely kicking off with mostly copy/paste content from other similar communities.

If you have really bad tinnitus, you can use your iPhone and Airpods Pro to get some relief. (lemmy.ninja)

As many tinnitus sufferers like myself know, the never-ending ringing in your ears can become unbearable at times. Sometimes white noise can help by making it harder to distinguish the ringing from other sounds. I know I’ve run fans in my bedroom while falling asleep to help distract me, for example....

mhz,

Do you really need all those apple products? There is tone of white noise apps in the store (I use android), I use “white noise baby sleep sound by amicoolsoft” to set some rain sound with thunder and make it play for 20-40min which is enough for me to fall asleep. I find earphones/headphonse uncomfortable so I play it on my phone speaker on medium low.

mhz,

That would be Proton, I guess

mhz,

Imo Kde neon serves as a test bench for whoever want to try the latest KDE DE directly from the kde team, it is not maint for daily driver use though I tried it for a while and it was pretty reliable.

Kubuntu is an ubuntu with kde that is maint to be used for daily driver usage.

mhz,

Sadly, that is the worst platfom to look for anything. It’s mostly just a bunch of freaks seeking validation.

mhz,

Good news for you, I’m 33 years old and I canxt code yet. I just finisged a book about shell scripting (in Linux) so I can understands the scripts I see in github and made some simple ones to automate some of my needs. Now I want to up it up a bit with python and I’m starting a new book with Havard cx50 course. You are never too old to learn. My regret is that i did not start sooner, like when I was your age.

mhz,

To you as well.

mhz,

I hope they consider cheap models especially arm based. not just “gamer” crap

mhz,

My worst tech mistake was buying a Samsung TV.

thank you Linux for giving a damn about Bluetooth headphones (feddit.de)

For context, LDAC is one of the few wireless audio codecs stamped Hi-Res by the Japan Audio Society and its encoder is open source since Android 8, so you can see just how long Windows is sleeping on this. I’m excited about the incoming next gen called LC3plus, my next pair is definitely gonna have that.

mhz,

Most destros default to Pipewire, even Debian 12.

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

mhz,

I think that is the route we are heading with flatpaks.

mhz,

It is amazing how 3 steps can be challenging for some even though these are explained in flathub (for all major distros) 1- install flatpak which should install a pluging for gui Package manager automatically. 2- add flathub repo. 3- Configure your gui package manager to default to flathub 4- enjoy installing rhe latest software from flathub without even needing root password (except for Opensuse TW)

mhz,

Stability with a compositor in it’s beta stages not a good combo. You want the latest packages that fix bugs and add features in this case.

What's the best debian/ubuntu based distro featuring KDE?

I’ve been using linux for some time now, i would still say i’m quite a noob but i’ve tried different desktop environments, for my experience i found GNOME to always be suited for me, anyway i heard many good opinions on KDE and i would love to try that too, i’ve tried cinnamon before and couldn’t really see myself...

mhz,

Well, why not Debian itself. However if you want something Debian based with ease of use then check Spiral linux

Opensuse tumbleweed is woth checking as well. It has a good KDE implementation and you may like Yast and Zypper.

mhz,

Flatpak can get you the latest version, not everything can installed using flatpak though.

Workspaces / Virtual Desktops – do you use them on your laptop, desktop, or both?

About 4 years ago I got a 13.3" Thinkpad laptop to replace an old Chromebook for portable development, and installed Arch + i3 on it (btw). After a bit of ricing the configs, it started feeling really homey. I love using workspaces here! They feel perfectly suited for laptop screens which have minimal space, allowing me to keep...

mhz,

I switched to sway on both my lapto (13" 1080p) and desktop (27" 1440) to force myself on using workspaces, and man i have to say I was missing out a lot, now I thinking of giving Hyprland a try to for dynamic tiling which sound fantastic especially for bigger screens.

Oracle: Keep Linux Open and Free—We Can’t Afford Not To (www.oracle.com)

Shots fired by Oracle. I trust them about as much as I have a chance of sailing with Larry Ellison (also, ever notice how he looks like a Bond villain?), but I could see their arguments swaying at least a few folks who are looking for a corporate-backed enterprise distro that has the resources and incentive to keep up. Maybe at...

mhz,

Very persuading coming from a company where half its employees are lawyers.

mhz,

Make sure you are selecting the instance holding your account. Eg: if you signed up on “lemmy.world”, then in your mobile app > in the log in page select “lemmy.world” then enter your creds and log in.
