Eh, I think the problem is customers just prefer bigger phones. I mean, personally I prefer the mini, but I think it’s clear I’m in the minority.

Using a rebrand to try and downplay the compactness may work for sight-unseen buyers, but in the end if they’re shown the bigger phone in-store, past sales would suggest they’re likely going to pick the bigger phone. (Phones ended up so big in the first place because people preferred them, too.)

Eh, I think the problem is the customers just take what apple gives them

I think this is true to an extent, but my argument against it would be to point to the period where Apple resisted making large phones, while Android phones were getting bigger and bigger. (This would be approximately the era of the 5/5S) In the more wild-west product lineup of Android, it became clear that bigger screens equaled more sales, for better or for worse.

I just wish Signal had better history and backup features.

You just know this is going to get mentioned at Tim Cook’s next iPhone keynote.

Oh I wasn’t being sarcastic or anything, I think it’ll make a great addition.

Fan Ports PlayStation Classic [WipeOut], Dares Sony To Shut Him Down And Make Its Own (kotaku.com)

WipeOut was Sony’s initial first-party exclusive for the original PlayStation when it launched back in 1995. The anti-gravity racing game was phenomenal. Now it’s abandoned. So one dedicated programmer took it upon himself to excavate the game’s leaked source code and make it playable for free in any web browser....

Why not everything? Honestly even 25 years seems too long, make it 10.

Wish the TouchID rumors were true; I have the iPad Air M1 with the side TouchID button and it works amazingly.

I wish Apple would bring it to their phones, but they really seem to like FaceID for some reason.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

This is absolutely the reason why Apple sticks with a rectangle, but that said, I’d still love to see them try for a round face.

Round faces look amazing for analog watch faces and only for that—but I’d still get one if they offered it.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. Lest we forget, Android is Linux-based, and it’s the most popular consumer operating system in the world.

Squabblr now officially a "free speech" cesspool, admins removed or forced out by owner (squabblr.co)

So I mean, most of us knew this beforehand and being on the fediverse we probably do not really care, but what was always on the horizon has no happened, the owner of Squabblr finally had enough having to be a decent person and has decided that his site is now “free speech purism”, so he gets to continue to insult LGBTQ...

Exactly! The great thing about Lemmy is that if your instance’s admins start doing stupid stuff you can just go to another instance.

I miss AskScienceFiction; it was always fun reading those in-universe answers.

There’s one here on LemmyWorld, but it’s pretty dead: !AskScienceFiction

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, the level of detail on this theme is really impressive!

As as aside, I didn’t realize that GTK had officially banned theming. That seems…dumb.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Attitudes like this are much worse for the health of the Fediverse, IMO.

A popular instance with users and content? Kill it immediately, we can’t risk people actually using the Fediverse.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

What did you think of the second one? I liked how it was open world, though the story itself left a lot to be desired IMO

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

IIRC, my dad bought progressives from Zenni and said they were as good as the ones he got from an optician.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

I remember people constantly asking for that to be a feature on Reddit, but I don’t believe it was ever implemented.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

The sad part is that if this goes through, no more credit card rewards.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on the platform.

If you’re on an Apple device at least, the built-in Books app works great for reading ePub files.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

I think so, I believe you can open them in Books via the Files app on iOS.

infotainment,

Not OP, but personally I found their level of micromanagement a bit offputting, such as their deletion of every support-adjacent post.

Honestly I feel like this attitude is the reason GIMP’s UX suffers. They’re so determined to be “not like photoshop” that they’re unwilling to fix some of their more boneheaded UI decisions out of fear that they’d be seen as copying photoshop.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Anyway, I wasn’t aware that GIMP UX suffers, I’ve never used anything else and am happy with it.

My argument here is that by never having used anything else, you wouldn’t necessarily realize how much better other UX choices could have been.

That said, I do have to give the devs some credit, as they have fixed two major issues, by adding single-window-mode and unifying the transform tools. Having each transform be its own separate tool was just awful UX IMO.

The biggest remaining UX problem, in my opinion, is the way GIMP forces layers to have fixed boundaries. Literally no other layer-based image editor has fixed layer boundaries, because it makes very little sense as a concept. Layers should solely be defined by their content, not by arbitrary layer properties set in a dialog box.

Voyager is seriously the best example of a PWA I’ve ever seen.

infotainment,

It does work as well as it can, but it’s sometimes a bit flakey. Sadly that’s Apple’s problem to fix.

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Remember that Android is Linux-based – so keeping that in mind, a massive amount of normal users use Linux on a daily basis.

I think the key is, operating systems are meant to exist in the background. If it’s working well, you don’t think about it at all.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Not yet, but they’ve said it will be. Personally I’m excited to see “mainstream” social media using ActivityPub, but you’ll find that it’s quite a divisive issue.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve said this elsewhere, but I don’t really agree with the article’s premise about what happened to XMPP.

XMPP was a niche thing before Google appeared, and it remained a niche thing after Google left. That said, it would have been much better had Google continued to support it!

This is a great idea, Voyager’s mobile experience is super polished.

Long shot, but would it be possible to get Mlmym installed at old.lemmy.world? Would be a fun throwback!

Has anyone else been trying to break their reddit-era habit of downvoting?

I used to downvote fairly often on Reddit as a sign to disagree or to push down really disgusting bigoted comments. And to be honest, it became a habit to just downvote without replying. However, now that I’m on lemmy and not Reddit I’ve been actively trying to not instantly downvote things and instead move on or take the...

Completely agree on all points.

An additional one I’d argue is a huge part of HN’s success is their employment of a full-time moderator, dang, who does a great job.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

I love the idea of this, but the only reason I check Instagram is to see what my friends are posting, which I couldn’t do on an alternative, sadly.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

This is actually why I’m excited for ActivityPub in Threads. I’m hoping that it can function as a gateway drug to the Fediverse.

I’m really wondering how the prescription lens part will work. At WWDC, they custom made lenses based on your glasses prescription, but the cost of them doing that for anyone who makes an appointment seems excessive.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

Right, but when you try on glasses you don’t need lenses pre-made, you can get away with just blanks.

For the Vision Pro, the lenses are required to even try the headset, so there’s a chicken and egg problem: people aren’t going to want to pay for lenses just for a try-on.

I’ll post a positive option to mix things up:

It’s a polished product, with no ads, no TikTok style video knockoffs, high quality photo uploads, and a decent recommendation engine. It has all the ingredients it needs for success.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Meta will likely ruin it eventually by A/B testing it to death to maximize revenue.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

While all that is true, you actually shouldn’t do that in your review, as that will often get it flagged/removed. (They’ll think it’s not a “real” review and instead part of a review bombing effort.)

Really hoping the EU finally forces Apple to open up their devices and we can be done with their nonsense. Let me use real Firefox on my iPad already!

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. (restoreprivacy.com)

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

they have full control over the app

Yup, this is also my problem with Signal; you’re stuck with whatever boneheaded decisions the devs make and there’s nothing you can do about it. Personally, my pet peeve is their refusal to add any kind of data export. As someone who likes backing up chat history, this is a dealbreaker for me.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

A more likely outcome is Big Tech coming in and fragmenting and dissolving ActivityPub servers like all the Lemmy servers.

How? If, say, Facebook built a Lemmy-compatible instance, the worst they could do is eventually defederate it from other Lemmy instances, in which case we’re right back where we started.

infotainment,
@infotainment@lemmy.world avatar

If Lemmy ends up with enough interesting content that it supplants Reddit as a source for vapid YouTube channels’ content, I see that as a win for Lemmy.

Really hoping we get an official Apollo client for Lemmy! (Granted the current clones aren't bad, but I'm a fan of the OG)

I definitely recommend Dracula — not only is it good, but it’s also the prototype for basically every subsequent vampire book/movie:
