I have a small rice cooker perfect for 1-2 portions. Aldi sells asian-style pan-fry veggie mixes including spices and all in large bags, frozen. They also sell veggie balls for frying, frozen.

Between those three + some spices + soy sauce, I can always create something nice with just a small pan, plus with the rice cooker timing is unimportant. Takes about 10 minutes max, most of which is standing next to the pan waiting for something to fry. Stacks nicely in a bowl, looks fancy, takes 0 effort, and I can customize the taste with the array of spices I always keep at home nowadays.

Though calling them “cross platform” when all you’re doing is opening a website in a browser is IMO a bit rich. Is lemmy cross-platform, too?

If at least they had native UI elements on each platform, we’d be getting somewhere. Fitting design and all.

@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

And to pre-empt any replies; your proposed solution must support Windows, Linux (X11 and Wayland), MacOS, iPhone, Android, Chromium and Firefox.

If you are a website, that’s easy, you are actually making the correct choice with Electron insofar that you want a browser.

If you’re doing an application not a webpage, then we’re walking W+L+Mac+Phones, that’s more tricky. I’m assuming for a second you want a usable UI (otherwise we’d be using Electron again :P ) so we’re talking two applications at least, one for mobile, one for desktop + maybe iPads.

And then it’s usually already too pricey to bother:

  • Web frontend devs are far cheaper than application developers.
  • Might as well just do a website, runs in everything. Only need to develop once.
  • Updating is immediate with a website, don’t have to do any deployment/upgrade/downgrade plans.

I don’t think including the base store is even a bad thing. I reckon the big change from this will be that if your app is signed as an app store and preinstalled or in turn signed off by Google, the usual safety precautions are dropped and for all intents and purposes you can behave like the Google Store.

Though… I give it ~1-4 minutes until the shitstorm about malware installing their own app stores to get around all security begins. And in this particular content, Epic counts as malware, given the shit they did on PC.

the major selling point of a true e-paper display is sunlight readability

Yeah, the whole “It behaves like an actual paper page for all relevant purposes” is kinda important to an e-ink display.

I’m sorry, but gaming isn’t a religion. To me at least. I don’t out “faith” into developers or games.

I wait for reviews and check some videos and hey, if it looks neat I’ll buy it. If it then turns out to be crap I’ll refund it. And if the same studio or franchise has turned out disappointed or bad stuff before, I need to be more impressed by reviews before considering a purchase.

The only thing I’d buy on faith is a wedding ring for a church wedding, tbh… (And I’m not in any church , so chances are low 😛)

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

and they deserve the hate from the people

No meaningless dev of a meaningless video game is ever worth a witch hunt. As a consumer, you have better things to do with your time. Like in this case, digging around in your nose, watching paint dry, or pouring another coffee. All quality uses of time that aren’t the waste that is getting angry at these devs.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Sadly, legally, it ain’t the same.

That is important because in some jurisdictions “preorder” has legal implications and importantly, obligations for the seller. A kickstarter does not. Not yet at least, over in Germany there’s a discussion about whether crowdfunding is just a form of taking preorders (in the legal sense), which would grant customers the same legal protections then.

Who's winning the war in Ukraine?

The media won’t give me great answers to this question and I think this I trust this community more, thus I want to know from you. I’ll be honest, having had something like that in the past and having had it for a kindle… I still don’t get the point.

It’s… “neat”. Neat is how I would describe it. All "ooooh"and “aaaaah”. And then you forget about it 5 days later and it would matter fuck all if I had it at that point or not, my brain never actively differentiates the minute detail of engaging charging any more.

Of course that doesn’t make it a bad thing either. I just don’t get the hype, basically. I suspect it’s good if you inherently need the part where it’s held still, like in a car mount?

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I just plug a cable in, tbh. Or have a stand the phone sits on, which automatically aligns it with the charging circutry, too.

That’s wht I mean. It’s neat. It solves the problem of needing a specific stand for a specific phone to ensure alignment. Of course in an age of 3D printing, a 3D-printed stand that aligns the USB-C cable actually works exactly as quick when putting the phone down, so eh. So yeah. Neat. But is it in any way transformative? No, not at all. In fact a day after I no longer notice it existing. Which speaks to good technology, sure, but also means I struggle a bit to understand why people make a bit deal out of:

  • Wireless charging
  • Magneting holders
  • Magneting holders with wireless chargers
Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Never had a USB port fail, no. And to be fair, lack of easy repairability is a separate and much bigger problem. On the FP4 I have, I doubt a broken charging port is a big problem, considering how easy the camera was to replace.

To me this “Google Maps keeps getting worse” has the distinct whiff of “Onyxia deep breathes more” after every patch.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I like them, tbh.

Took getting used to for a few days but roads and other features stand out better. Just “browsing” is worse because of the stark colors with high saturation, but navigation and finding things works better as a result, too.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

That sounds like your phone is on the way out more than Google Maps having an issue, tbh.

I had this before after a system update on my Fairphone 4 completely broke the orientation sensor which in turn made navigation absolutely horrible. It was only fixed months later by another big update.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

It’s sliiiightly more complicated.

If push came to shove you’d need to be able to prove that you won the content you’re basing the claim on.

So it would go something like this:

  1. Create something, like a piece of music.
  2. Have all rights reserved.
  3. Put it on piratebay somehow.
  4. Make a claim on Google Chrome because it facilitates downloading your music illegally.

Does a colorscheme (for desktop or app themes) optimized for "Blue light filter" exist?

I found this post on Hacker News news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38421110and in it a comment that sparked my interest: “Only tangentially related but: I have a blue light filter (Plasma night color) always on on my laptop because I feel like, in combination with brightness reduction, I get less eye strain. I’ve always wondered...

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Sidenote: medically speaking there seems to be no truly measurable effect of blue light filters on eye strain.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I know of that use. And while that’s also debated (as to whether the effect is strong enough to be useful), it checks out subjectively for me, too.

OP said it reduces eye strain though, and that got me thinking about those claims about the gunnar glasses that were debunked years ago so I went hunting whether any new research might have come up, but yeah, if anything it further concludes that eye strain reduction doesn’t happen. You’re right about subjectively preferred colors in dark environments though. Or subjectively preferring warmer colors in general, which is why it’s so weird to me that people leave those vivid-color-boost modes enables on their phones.

Is it a Switch bot?

If so, quick question: Does it need a hub? Or can I just but the switch, install an app for it, then couple it with a home assistant?

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Last time I needed new headphones for going out, I bought a Shockz bone conducting headphone.

While the specific one I bought was the wrong choice (the Run I got is slick but needs a proprietary charging cable instead of the USB-C the Move uses, and they sound 100% the same), overall the concept is really good. I enjoy hearing people around me, for someone who more listens to podcasts and radio shows not music the quality is perfect, and I can wear these on my bicycle without having to worry I won’t hear something.

Also, since they don’t sit in the ear not enclose it it’s easy to semi-forget them there as they’re so comfortable, no stuffed feeling or sweaty ears. I sometimes just use them at home instead of shifting a podcast onto the sonos speakers. Just easier.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

If I now say that your premise is wrong (headphones don’t cause hearing loss, loud noises do, independent of the source), does that automatically answer your question? 😛

Now to dig a bit deeper into that, there is a lot of research into MIHL from using PLDs, and the key thing is always people turning up the volume higher than they normally would, usually due to the context of where they are. That is, we use our little headphones in noisy environments, and to drown out the noise we turn them up too much and start damaging our ears over time.

In that regard, bone conduction headsets are worse. They are intentionally fully open, and don’t in the slightest bit try to reduce ambient noise. That is, if anything you’d be tempted to crank them up even higher.

I will however say that the models I’ve used all came with an interesting “safety” in this regard that stems from the way they work: At a certain and not that loud noise level, they start vibrating physicially off the skin during playback, in turn plateauing the achievable volume. I suspect however that this level is already beyond healthy.

So, in other words:
If you’re concerned about hearing loss, keep the volume in sane reaches. If you also need to ignore outside noise while listening, this means getting enclosing and/or noise-cancelling headphones, not open ones like bone conducting. However, if keeping the volume low, say during listening at home, bone conduction is no different from other forms of receiving audio, both still stimulate the hearing canal hairs.

Alex seems more and more unhinged lately

Yeah this surprised me, too. For all the time I’ve heard KF analyse his shows, he seemed to age poorly of course - owing probably a fair bit to his rampant alcoholism - but otherwise on-track. At all times. He was always just a right-wing grifter, following whatever trend he could exploit to sell more gold/waterfilters/bonemealshakes/whatever with. But the recent 2-3 months? Damn.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

There’s a good reason they are done that way, namely that few people ever need to directly interact with them. People instead scroll content with their mouse wheel, touchpad or via touch devices directly, and hence the scroll bar is relegated to a pure indicator of roughly where on the page you are, which for many pages isn’t even necessary.

That being said: If you set Windows 11 to “Always show scroll bars” - which you would if you need them as actual input surfaces - then it also signals all apps to show them at full size again. Which Firefox in fact does, as I just found out.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

In that case you set the system to show them bigger, which should affect all apps.

In fact I just tested this, and if I set Windows 11 to “always show scroll bars” (which matches your use case), Firefox immediately goes to full-size scrollbar mode.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah if I were to buy offbrand, it’d be a Windows tab. At least due to the driver standardization and everything, and near-endless updates, I got a good chance to be able to use that so long as the raw hardware is up to speed.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Me, reading this: “Wait, how can this be thievery? What would they do, just 1-to-1 copy the actual pictures?!”

Oh yes. That’s exactly what they did. 🤦

New idea:

Whenever a company wants to drop X workers, the first Y people of that have to be the C-suites, and they cannot get a parachute. They leave just on the last pay they received regularly, no bonuses or anything.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Oh course, and I’m half joking. But something has to be done about execs stuffing their own arse full with all the bank notes they get from mass layoffs, when that money could easily keep some of those workers employed.

I would argue that a runtime of 3 years is fantastic, and if it isn’t that’s just indicative of an industry that is broken at its very core.

No? The opposite of anything, I consume media much more on my TV, PC and via my ereader recently.

My smartphone has mostly been relegated to a communications device the recent 3-6 months as I’ve lost the will to try to go through media on a needlessly tiny screen. Luckily though, I don’t have a commute any more. But when I did, I read books on the ereader during the train travel instead of being on the phone.

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, they could also say “Epic is just trash compared to Spotify as far as value to have on your platform goes” and I couldn’t really fault them for that.

I don’t think it causes issues for them specifically though. I bet they offered Epic deals, Epic just didn’t want them. If anything they could point to a few recipients of such deals and go “But look, we’re doing this, we just won’t do a deal with Tim Sweeney because well, who in their right mind would?”.

Carighan,
