i_stole_ur_taco,

That’s not true. Sometimes we just follow the United States

…and then grumble about it. Very quietly.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Is that the guy that had a bunch of clones of the original dog?

i_stole_ur_taco,

I had the same experience! I got as far as the first boss, died, and thought this game just wasn’t for me and fuck all the hype.

Came back a few years later and actually paid attention to the lore and was blown away.

i_stole_ur_taco,

If you’re hired as a developer and the only tasks you’re getting assigned are HTML, are you a developer?

I think rather than the tools and languages you use, titles should be determined by the kinds of memes you consume.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Gen-X men see eye-to-eye with male Gen-Zers. An identical 43 percent of men in that bracket call themselves feminists, compared to 49 percent of the generation’s women.

I feel like the authors think these 2 sentences are supporting the same argument, and I think they do not.

Asking someone if they “identify as a feminist” is vastly different than exploring their core values. “Feminism” is a badly exploited word that means many different things to many different people, even within a generational cohort.

It’s entirely possible that the sample of Gen-Xers that identify as feminist also carry more regressive beliefs than Gen-Zers that said they were not feminists.

The way this study was summarized in the article smells a lot like an older author (read: Gen-X or Boomer) trying to make sense of Gen-Z by plopping them into buckets created for the older generation.

I don’t know anything about anything, but this smelled less of science than an article reporting a study ought to.

i_stole_ur_taco,

YOLO and FOMO are two of the horsemen of the apocalypse.

Maybe BOGO is another one.

Why isn't everyone talking about AI generated audiobooks?

I just listened to this AI generated audiobook and if it didn’t say it was AI, I’d have thought it was human-made. It has different voices, dramatization, sound effects… The last I’d heard about this tech was a post saying Stephen Fry’s voice was stolen and replicated by AI. But since then, nothing, even though it’s...

i_stole_ur_taco,

I love the multi book series where they hire a different narrator for certain books and they end up pronouncing names and places differently than the first narrator.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I never asked to ride the bone train!

i_stole_ur_taco,

And if there’s something of value in the pre order (bonus DLC, pre-install before launch, etc), you can just pre order it the day before it launches.

You get your “stuff” and the company accountants don’t get to squeal with delight 3 months prior to launch.

Man who refused to wear mask, assaulted B.C. Walmart greeter sentenced (bc.ctvnews.ca)

The vulnerability of the victim, a senior who is described as “of very small stature” was also considered aggravating. The judge noted that although Beresford was using a scooter, there was no evidence that he needed to do so because of a disability and that he was younger, bigger and stronger than the victim.

i_stole_ur_taco,

This poor man also won’t be allowed to have firearms for three years, the poor baby.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I always seem to scroll to some squirrel hentai or some dude’s butthole the second a random passerby can see my phone.

I could hide NSFW posts, but that’s not a life worth living.

i_stole_ur_taco,

The restaurants on the list “deliver exceptional experiences through the quality of their food, level of service and commitment to culinary creativity,” according to Air Canada.

It’s nice that some local businesses are winning recognition, but what the fuck does Air Canada know about exceptional experiences, quality of food, levels of service, OR commitment to creativity?

i_stole_ur_taco,

You sneaky bugger. Now that song’s going to be stuck in my head on repeat all night!

i_stole_ur_taco,

The Room is an awful movie that everyone needs to watch at least a couple times.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I remember being 13 years old in the doctor’s waiting room feeling awkward for wanting to play with it as I thumbed through a boring, 11 year old Reader’s Digest.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Now this is the kind of shitposting that gets me out of bed in the morning!

i_stole_ur_taco,

Would it help if we deleted some communications? I have a lot of them.

Oh, since we’re in here, let me tell you about all these captain’s logs we’re about to delete so you have some extra context about my shore leave from 25 years ago.

Why is this maintenance taking so long? It seems like all we’ve done is look at old logs…

Whats the best budget friendly way to transfer vhs tapes

Hiya, pretty much the title. I have a dozen tapes I want to backup before age takes its toll. My basic idea after watching some videos online is to buy a hardware based upscaler that can interface with my vcr then throw that signal to a video capture card and record on my computer. I’ll go with name brands to avoid problems...

i_stole_ur_taco,

My library has a digitization room you can book in order to digitize tapes, photos, slides, etc. If you’ve got something similar in your area that would be extremely budget friendly.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I sure want the prosecution to win in this trial, but I agree with the defence’s request here. This reeks like the US Secret Service losing a ton of text messages surrounding the January 6th coup attempt because there was another convenient “device upgrade” that caused messages to be irrecoverably lost.

The courts should be coming in hard telling law enforcement agencies that you don’t get to destroy data you’re supposed to be archiving because “shrug there was a system upgrade”.

This is a serious oversight and compliance problem on the part of police that isn’t specifically related to this case, but is something that needs to be broadly understood and respected.

It has the same stink as police turning off their body cams right before beating some unarmed “assailant” to death.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Same! I’ve been a lazy, well-meaning ass about it for months but this was the little nudge I needed.

i_stole_ur_taco,

overstock.com bought the BB&B brand after they went bankrupt, so we’ll be seeing it for many years to come.

Except instead of being run by inept business people, it’ll be run by an inept fascist business person.

(I know, I know, he resigned)

i_stole_ur_taco,

Happened here, too. Also using Memmy.

i_stole_ur_taco,

The carnist-compatible alternative is to just stop pretending to care about animal welfare.

It’s a consistent moral position to say “animals exist as my prey and their feelings don’t matter to me”, but it directly conflicts with this hypocrisy where we act like baby farm animals and dogs and cats are soooo cute, and then we conveniently ignore everything that happens on the farm and downstream because it doesn’t suit that narrative.

What drives me absolutely crazy is when people willingly say “I don’t like to think about where my grocery store meat comes from!” but continue to buy it.

i_stole_ur_taco,

They ought to be. You might have to change ownership of the file to some other local user (and disable permission inheritance for that file so admin can’t touch it), but I bet this would work for most use cases except like a system restore.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Unfortunately, in doing so, Signal became Yet Another Messaging App. It really damaged their value proposition in my eyes.

If I need a separate app for SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal, etc, it just becomes a chore to find enough friends willing to move to it exclusively.

The IM ecosystem really needs to be harmonized on the user end. I remember Trillian was this great app back in the day that brokered all your MSM, Google Chat, etc IM accounts into a single app that let you just focus on messaging people and not worrying about what platform was being used. We badly need this again.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Both are excellent household cleaners, but despite common belief, they aren’t good cleaners when mixed together.

i_stole_ur_taco,

One person needs to subscribe (I thought it was like 3 bucks a year) for all the premium sharing features.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Omg I thought this was just me.

Spend an hour on nexusmods and fooling around with installing them, then call it a night.

It’s the gaming equivalent of spending the night scrolling Netflix and never watching anything.

i_stole_ur_taco,

This post made me nostalgic for the days when uTorrent was the shit. Man, how the mighty have fallen.

i_stole_ur_taco,

There’s kneading and there’s scratching. Handle them differently.

If he’s scratching, he’s usually standing and stretching around the same time. They need to do this, but you can redirect it to someplace that’s ok for them to scratch.

Quite often you can do this by placing a scratch post near the place they’re nuisance scratching. Something carpeted works well, but I really like the cardboard ones. It looks like a board of cardboard glued together, with a waffle-ish pattern they can really dig into. Another nice thing about cardboard is its nothing like furniture or carpeting, so less likely to confuse the cat about what he’s allowed to scratch.

Kneading is more of an expression of comfort and love. You should nurture this, because it’s adorable and they will do it less intensely as they grow up. If they’re kneading they’re often purring and rhythmically kneading dough.

In both cases, you should be trimming his claws regularly. If you do it calmly and gently from an early age, this should be trivial. I have 2 cats and trim their claws every couple of weeks. It takes about 30 seconds per cat.

This does require confidence on your part (cats smell your hesitation and stuff body language and hate it), and it requires your cat to trust you enough to let you handle his paws.

Look up a handful of guides and videos online on the technique. Jackson Galaxy is a popular YouTuber that probably has some content on this.

My mom has a semi-feral cat who simply will not tolerate her claws being trimmed. As a result she’s a nightmare - damaged furniture, accidental scratches, and she’s constantly getting caught on fabric. Don’t let that happen!

i_stole_ur_taco,

Something to do with efficiency when they transport them via aircraft.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Dammit. I thought I’d escaped it after not thinking about it for years, and now his contributions to Moulin Rouge are stuck in my head again!

i_stole_ur_taco,

I first read it as the left side being the industrialized world, and the right side being from developing countries. I saw it as a subtle awareness about how we rich fucks try to exclude immigration from “shithole countries” because then we wouldn’t have as many toys.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Why walk across town when you can dance?

i_stole_ur_taco,

Some people do, but it’s a dead giveaway when a truck bed is so small it can’t hold a sheet of plywood, AND the truck is super clean AND it doesn’t have any dents and scratches.

At that point it’s obviously not being used for what it was originally designed for.

i_stole_ur_taco,

It could be reduced to Riker only asking “Why?” in the top right frame. Still a great meme submission and I love it.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Yeah, did you? I’m weirdly invested in this now.

i_stole_ur_taco,

Every type of mushroom is edible at least once.

i_stole_ur_taco,

That fridge looks like it’s sitting in the middle seat on an airplane.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I’m still trying to work it into a Liberace pun…

i_stole_ur_taco,

They also have an infant mortality rate of 17 per 1000 vs 2.5 per 1000 in South Korea. I don’t think counting births is super useful here.

i_stole_ur_taco,

I’ve started opening up cheap electronic/electrical devices I buy and just snip one of the leads on the pointless status LEDs they have all over the place.

i_stole_ur_taco,

It helps to zoom in when clicking potential landing zones.

I did a (boring) 100% planetary survey and one of the fauna I needed to scan were fish in the water close to the shore. I spent wayyy too much time running around looking for water until I realized there was always some within a couple hundred metres of the ship landing site (I assume it’s generated that way for that biome type).

When you’re landing on a Whatever (Coast), keep your eyes open to see what direction the water is when you come in. Otherwise it can be hard to see it from the ground if it’s a foggy world.

i_stole_ur_taco,

As luck would have it, I was travelling in Las Vegas last year when I had sudden abdominal pain. Fortunately, I have travel health insurance from my work, so I went to the hospital. At that time I’d been inundated by how fucking AMAZING American healthcare is over anywhere else in the world.

I was admitted from the ER, spent a night in an overflow bed waiting for OR time, and had my operation and was discharged the following day. Just for fun, I also learned I had COVID during the intake process.

Comparing it to my experience with Canada’s healthcare system, the only difference was I had to wait before being treated for a woman with a giant cart with a computer and papers and other shit to screen for my insurance to be sure I was eligible to receive care. They didn’t want to treat me because my travel insurance was through another network, but they would treat me because this was deemed an emergency surgery.

Apart from that, it was essentially what I see in Canada:

  • nursing staffing shortfalls
  • poor communication inside the hospital (post-op team hadn’t even been told I had COVID)
  • “long” but acceptable wait for an emergency surgery
  • standard diagnostics took a couple hours (bloodwork, CT, etc)

Some things were better:

  • good parking at the hospital
  • building and facilities were clean and seemed new

Some things were poorer:

  • I was discharged with a prescription and told to stop at a pharmacy on the way home for painkillers. In Canada they would hand me a bag with the meds already dispensed.
  • got a call from collections (in Switzerland?!) six months later asking why I hadn’t paid my bill. It took far too much time to get them to understand they never gave me a bill nor access to one, and just claiming a bunch of $9999.99 expenses against my health insurance (which declined them due to lack of information) was insufficient

The whole experience left me really soured on American healthcare. It was “fine”. I felt like it was free tier healthcare that nobody should be paying out of pocket for. The extra hoops and whistles SOLELY BECAUSE OF MONEY was depressing and awful.

My comparison, we just had a baby (back in Canada). I’m apparently going to have to pay a bill of a couple hundred bucks because we opted for a private room for postpartum care, but I didn’t sign anything and haven’t heard anything yet. I also had to pay for parking for several days, so add another maybe 50 bucks for all that. The only thing I can really complain about is how beat up the furniture in the hospital was, and how old the artwork on the wall was. Oh, and the family room that had 2 VCRs, no tapes, and a stack of DVDs (and no DVD player). Kind of petty stuff.

Tl;dr: they’re the same in my eyes, except one cost $70,000 for 18 hours and the other cost me $500 for 3 days.

i_stole_ur_taco,

1000% agreed. While those add-ons I paid for were all “optional”, they do reek of benefits only available to the privileged.

I can live with that, but what I find really egregious is that people get a bill (of $150, but still) if they need an AMBULANCE to take them to a hospital. I’m sure there’s programs in place to help people without a lot of money to get it covered, but the fact it’s been set up this way in the first place stinks.
