petrescatraian,

@xyguy the M8 was indeed top notch. A friend in highschool had it and those speakers were really great. It also had a slow motion camera which he used to create amazing videos. That was something I craved for every phone to this day (my current phone now has it fortunately). Not to mention the aluminum body and its relatively solid design. I accidentally stepped on it while with screen down and it had nothing. By the time I was able to get my first phone though, the M8 was no longer on sale. They had the M9 but I didn't know if it would be the same experience.

I also had a great experience with the Lenovo Yoga Tab 8. It also had an aluminum body and a kickstand which proved itself really useful. I don't remember watching a movie on it this way, but it was useful in college. And the battery could last me for about a full week! Also plenty of space, as despite having only 16GB of storage, the system had only 2-3 at most. I don't remember ever hitting the threshold, even though I did install some games here and there. Also, it came with a free version of Kingsoft Office (now rebranded to WPS Office) that had no ads. And it could connect to Google Drive. I kept using that version for as long as I could. And it also had front-facing speakers.

I think the hardware of the Yoga series is the thing that I cannot live without. I know there are ways to attach a keyboard to a regular tablet and keep it in an upright position as well, but the fact that the Yoga can be placed in so many positions makes it extremely useful imo. Not to mention the slightly bulkier base can be fitted with a larger battery and can also be used as a handle to hold your tablet when reading. If I'm getting a tablet again, I think it will surely be another Yoga (I see they still produce the model). I wish it had a removable battery as well though.

petrescatraian,

@taanegl whatever you do, don't stay at home. This is a great opportunity to travel places. I spent my previous two Christmases alone in my house and I felt miserable. Try going to some place where you could go in the morning or return to the evening if you don't afford/cannot get accommodation. Or, if you can, book a ticket in a sleeper train in one day in the evening, and another in a sleeper train back in the evening of the next day (that way, you could combine the cost of the accomodation with that of the transport, and you could come out cheaper and save time). Try getting through all the best parts of that place - maybe check for information about that city on Wikipedia or anywhere and take some photos (it could also be an opportunity to get into photography if you want. That'll help you out as well. Then start categorizing your pics into a photo management program, you'll keep yourself busy a lot).

As for me, I think I have enough chores to do to keep myself busy. Plus some movies to watch and a book to finish.

petrescatraian,

@ijeff will the wallpapers stay even when it fallbacks to SMS?

petrescatraian,

Wow...

petrescatraian,

@jeena yea, I'm using AntennaPod myself and I used it since the website was still available. I'd like to sync the podcast on desktop as well, but there's nothing I can use to sync it with (okay, there is the option to use Nextcloud, but I have no self-hosted instance)

petrescatraian,

@darcmage oh, okay. Would I be able to install/remove/disable Nextcloud plugins on these providers or will I be limited on what they offer?

petrescatraian,

@jeena I used gPodder (Yes, it's an app as well). But I didn't really check the sync capabilities, apart from the played/unplayed episodes and syncing subscriptions. I also tend to listen to each episode from start to end, so syncing timestamps or something wasn't really a priority for me.

The website was also great because you could choose which podcast to sync where.

petrescatraian,

@darcmage Thank you!

Edit: it was a joke, lol. That thing belongs to the dumpster even if you're born there in this time and age

petrescatraian,

@ijeff who cares if it will still be using this data for advertising...

petrescatraian,

@utzer It currently does, afaik. That's why I turned this off long ago, even though I found the feature quite useful. I might use it again in the future though if there will be credible signs this will no longer be the case.

For now, there are plenty of self-tracking apps if you're into this. I personally use Transistor when I am going on hikes or various trips. It's great if you want to have a journal of places with gpx tracks.

@ijeff

petrescatraian,

@smeg Me and my friends use it as a fallback for mildly urgent stuff. If anything is more urgent, then we call each other.

@Dark_Arc

petrescatraian,

@alyaza I'm busy with stuff and trying to get some proper sleep in the process. The thing I am the happiest about is that trams started running on my street again after months of being suspended for some pipe works. I finally have a more convenient way of getting to and from work without spending so much time in traffic again.

I am also due to clean up my house, but I never get time for that. I did manage to go through my agenda in my good old Yahoo Mail and clean up there. I wanted to do away with Davx5 on my phone since I have no account to my phone address book with apart from Google and the recently re-discovered GeneralSync, and because I previously removed my Yahoo! account from there (it was just not syncing anymore), but I tried logging in again and it somehow works. Cleanup is not entirely done yet, however.

Apart from that, we organized a "Secret Santa" at work, and now I finally have a nice pair of gloves that can be used with a touch screen. Yayy for technology, I guess. 😁

petrescatraian,

@ninjan Clearly not, lol, not at all. The guy is not a newcomer in politics, either. He's previously served as a prime-minister until 2014 and then has been the President of the European Council, so I'm not seeing him go anywhere close to Donald Trump, unless I'm missing something.

petrescatraian,

@bermuda When Snapchat was popular, I had a shitty phone that I could not even upgrade WhatsApp on. This lasted for a few months to a year. Insta was already quite popular beforehand, but since I had no smartphone, I got late to the game. So my account was inactive for quite a bunch of time. Later I got in college and got a Huawei P8 Lite, and I used it for a while, with my friends, but more for the camera effects. We weren't really chatting there. But there were more people posting stories there indeed. Now almost everyone is on Instagram.

petrescatraian,

@TIN perhaps you can find someone making recommendations or stuff. I had a similar experience with Dota 😅

Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts? (libranet.de)

I am in the process of moving out some contacts from Google Contacts, specifically those that I do not have a Gmail address. It's a way for me to give these people a tiny bit more privacy, as I'm doing a cleanup of my contact list. My concern is that Google will still keep their data even after I delete it from my end. Is it so?...

petrescatraian,

@lemann Thank you! Yea, many of my contact's emails are probably on Yahoo instead, so it's not that much of a biggie. I know nobody using Tuta or Proton or whatever. And probably they no longer care since most people use their emails only for logging in to websites that don't support SSO with social networks/Google and just outright create a new email if they forget their password to that. But hey, less data for Google is still less data for Google.

petrescatraian,

@sbv Thank you!

petrescatraian,

@ReversalHatchery I was thinking about that. I previously worked for a company that did the exact same thing, if I recall correctly (this was years ago, so I'm not sure whether they still do it). But I wanted to see if anyone has any more knowledge about this thing than me. If that's what happens, I guess I'll be fine simply keeping these contacts on Google and saving anything on GeneralSync going forward (or any other such alternative service).

@Greenpepper copyed the link to the original post and pasted it in my search bar. Doesn't fetch the post. Seems not to be working with Friendica yet...

Edit: I managed to fetch the post, but only after fetching his profile. Here's (approximately) how you can view it in my node:

petrescatraian,

@HuddaBudda You won't hear any time soon. Authoritarian states not only prevent news like these from surfacing, but also repress any little form of opposition. Look at how many rather influential people got shot, stabbed, poisoned, defenestrated etc.

Normal pepple do not have a fraction of their power.

@CDRMITTENS

petrescatraian,

Whatever else I play, I always come back to Stardew Valley. There's always something you can do there, and there's always something you can find. It just never gets me bored.

petrescatraian,

@blindsight pretty much everywhere mods add a lot of extra life to the game 😁 but for Stardew Valley specifically, I haven't modded it yet. If I get bored though, I might.

petrescatraian,

@Fubarberry Can I also use my deck as a PS5 controller and, like, play with a friend?

petrescatraian,

@OutlierBlue @themachine I was hoping to read about that heavy metal band from Atlanta

petrescatraian,

@LaFinlandia When things like these happen, you clearly know that it is now or never

[Solved] How can I reset the desktop mode screen resolution? (libranet.de)

I was playing around with AnyDesk on the Deck, getting some stuff, and I wanted to set the screen share resolution to fit my laptop screen (where I was streaming the screen to). I somehow managed to change the resolution to something really small, and no setting on AnyDesk could change it back....

petrescatraian,

@SatyrSack @e0qdk Thanks. I, unfortunately, do not have a dock. I will go to a friend tomorrow who has and I will be connecting it to a monitor. Hopefully this will help.

Once in a terminal, this command should change the resolution

Thank you!

petrescatraian, (edited )

@SatyrSack Thank you!

Edit: So I solved it simply by plugging in to an external monitor. I had the resolution set at something like 200x[something] (probably just a dot on the Deck's screen, lol).

So I connected it, went to the display settings and adjusted the resolution of the Deck's screen from there.

Gosh, having a dock and an external monitor is really useful tbh, I gotta spare some money for this

petrescatraian,

@Inventa It doesn't have templates, nor does it automatically sync with anything (albeit it does have automatic backups), but Notally is simple enough

petrescatraian,

@Inventa I just tag them and uncheck everything after I'm done.

petrescatraian,

@IoSapsai Ah, yes, a classic. They can never be ready for winter. When you hear that, just run (or go skying like our president does, whichever is more convenient).

Which city are you in?

petrescatraian,

@IoSapsai I might know which town myself. So yes, my theory confirms. Authorities, all over the world, are never (enough) prepared for winter.

petrescatraian,

@ALostInquirer For books I use Calibre on my computer and I've recently started to use Bookwyrm in exchange to Goodreads (although pretty much all my friends use the latter).

For Music I use Discogs (for physical media) and maybe Bandcamp (for digitally owned media? idk, I just download them and use whatever music player I have on each device)

For movies I started using Letterboxd, recently migrated from IMDb, but it seems that not all movies are there yet, idk.

For photos, on my phone I use Google Photos without a Google account (I'm no longer syncing to them since they removed the unlimited backup feature). But Aves is also a great option which allows you to edit tags.

Never bothered about games tbh.

petrescatraian,

empty space for more trash orcs Russian soldiers to fill in (sorry, this autocorrect is really annoying).

petrescatraian,

@CDRMITTENS I mean he'll have plenty of dollars at his disposal. Give him some quids and he'll calm down
