Tippon,

This made me laugh, thank you :)

While I’m not averse to sailing the seas on occasion, this is one of those times where I should do everything by the book.

Tippon,

That’s a good idea, thanks :)

Now to see if any of the little buggers can draw :D

Tippon,

I hadn’t thought of photos, I was leaning more towards cartoony drawings. I’ll have a look, thanks :)

Tippon,

Thanks for the suggestions :)

It’s not something that I’m planning on selling, hence the low budget and why I haven’t gone down that route. If it did sell I’d be over the moon, as well as really shocked :D

Tippon,

Thanks for the advice, you’ve hit the nail on the head.

I’m in an awkward position where I think I’ve got something that will make the kids happy, but I can only do part of it, and I don’t want to take advantage of someone for the other part. I’m looking for something that can hopefully do both.

Tippon,

Have you considered www.OpenClipArt.org ?

I hadn’t, mainly because I hadn’t heard of it before :D

It looks like a great resource though, so thank you :)

Unfortunately, the chances of me learning to draw are slim. I can draw a passable doodle if I can get my head in the right place, but as I said in the post, my imagination is awful. I can’t picture things properly, so can’t get a mental image of what I want the thing on the paper to look like. I’m waiting on a diagnosis of autism and ADHD and possibly aphantasia. Trying to get things down on paper is very difficult for me.

Tippon,

Why would you do that to me! :o

CoraQuest looks amazing, but it’s out of stock everywhere here :(

Tippon,

That’s a good idea, I’ll give it a try, thanks :)

Tippon,

not trivializing your issues, friend, just offering encouragment!

Don’t worry, that’s how I took it :)

You make a good point. I need to try drawing and keep practising. Even if it does turn out to be useless for the book, I can still draw with the kids.

I might even make them feel good be being so much better than me! :D

Tippon,

I like your style :D

Tippon,

That would be ideal. I think the book is probably a bit too personalised as it is though, and wouldn’t be too interesting to people outside the family. It could make a nice challenge to rewrite it a bit and change some of the personal details though :)

Tippon,

That’s a good idea and could work. I’m a bit concerned about taking advantage of someone though, especially if they’re young. I’d have to be careful.

Tippon,

That’s a great idea, thanks :)

I’ve just mentioned in another reply that the book is currently a bit too personalised, so probably wouldn’t appeal to other people. If I can rewrite it a bit to remove any personal details, that could work though :)

Tippon,

True.

Tippon,

Then I might be the coolest person you’ve ever met :D

Tippon,

That’s a good idea, thanks :)

Tippon,

a google image search (under the image search bar select tools -> usage rights -> creative commons rights)

Huh, I didn’t know that existed. Thanks for the heads up :)

Tippon,

Good thinking! :D

Tippon,

I don’t really understand the issue with copyright. Are you afraid of infringing on other people’s copyright, or that you won’t be able to protect your work if it’s made by AI?

A bit of both to be honest. With the current fuss around AI artwork, I don’t want to either steal someone else’s work, or in the very unlikely event that mine becomes popular, have mine taken. The second one is much less of a concern though.

Tippon,

That’s a very good point. I’m hopeless at practicing. I’ve got ADHD, so find it hard to do something that I don’t want to do at the moment, and when I was younger I could pick up new skills fairly easily, so never bothered learning properly. I would do as much as it took to be ok at something, then usually stop there.

Tippon,

Very true. I need to get my ideas across, and that’s probably the best way :)

Tippon,

For me it’s the opposite - I want to learn the minimum needed to accomplish something, and being forced to study is very difficult. At least, that’s how my brain sees it.

I want to learn, and would be happy to focus on a drawing class, but the neurodivergent part of my brain sees that as torturous. Being forced to do something that I don’t want to do, even if it leads to me doing something that I do want to do, is like nails down a blackboard.

Tippon,

That’s a lovely idea. I’ll have to see if any of them can draw at all :D

Tippon,

For now I just want to publish it for the family, so vanity publishing. Some of the family have suggested selling it though, so while I don’t personally think it would sell, I want to make sure that I’m doing everything properly.

Tippon,

That’s a good point. I’m lucky enough to have received my kidney from a live donor, and the story is about how they saved the day, and because of that I was able to have a family with my wife, so it could go down quite well. I’d have to remove the personalised information, but that shouldn’t be too hard :)

Tippon,

Yes, that’s why I said it’s the opposite ;)

I don’t know what it’s called, but I know that I really struggle with doing things that I don’t want to do.

Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Now i’ve been considering moving to linux. I don’t have much of a history using a computer and find it tougher to use than my phone. But I also really appreciate the foss movement. I’ve currently got an old laptop running windows 11 I think and it would prolly speed up with linux too. But I’m afraid I’d fuck smth up...

Tippon,

Probably the most important thing to ask before you do anything is, do you have someone who can fix the computer if you screw it up? Installing Linux means removing Windows, so if you get half way through and get stuck, you’re going to be left with a computer that doesn’t work. Will you be able to recover it, or have someone who can?

Once you’re on the desktop, most of what you do is going to be very similar to Windows, except most of the programs will have different names. I would imagine that the vast majority of people can use Linux once it’s installed, especially if they’re in your situation, where they’re not used to computers and don’t have any habits from Windows.

Tippon,

It doesn’t have to be someone who knows Linux, you just need to be able to get back to a working computer. If it means going back to Windows until you know more, that’s fine, just keep learning :)

Tippon,

Thank god it’s cloudy 😳

Tippon,

I didn’t know that it could do pip, or npm, so it’s a hidden gem for me, thanks :)

Tippon,

This is the right idea. Cycling excludes the disabled and elderly, and doesn’t improve things for families either. Putting the public servants on public transport would incentivise them to make it better, and that would make access better for everyone.

I’d give the buildings some parking for night workers, if they’re not able to use the visitor or disabled parking, just because lots of public transport doesn’t run overnight, and it wouldn’t make sense for it to run.

Tippon,

Just be aware with Xiaomi phones that you might be restricted for certain things.

My memory’s not great, so I can’t remember if it was unlocking the bootloader or root, but Xiaomi locked it behind an account. You can’t unlock without setting up a Xiaomi account that includes, from memory, your email address, phone number, and date of birth.

I’ve read that newer phones are going to be even more locked down, but I don’t know if there are going to be workarounds.

Tippon,

I’ve found the article I mentioned earlier. It’s the bootloader that currently needs a Xiaomi account to unlock.

https://xiaomiui.net/how-to-unlock-xiaomi-bootloader-and-install-custom-rom-7098/

I’m sure that I’ve read that they are going to restrict rooting and bootloader unlocking though, probably on here somewhere. I just can’t find the post.

Tippon,

You can set up a free server with Oracle that runs on the internet. Set up the whitelist and the firewall, and you should be able to keep it private :)

…oracle.com/…/how-to-set-up-and-run-a-really-powe…

There’s a link here to help you to connect to it too

Tippon,

I use a cheap little speaker pretty much every time I shower, but I tend to listen to music whenever I’m getting ready anyway. Because it’s a cheap one, the sound isn’t amazing, but when I’m in the shower the other noises drown a lot of the sound out anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.

I’m disabled though, so I tend to get in the shower after my wife and kid have left the house, and I take a while. If I shower in the morning, my washing and dressing routine can take close to an hour, so it’s not like I’m jumping in and out before the first song has the chance to finish.

I hadn’t thought of listening to a podcast or audiobook while I’m getting ready though, so that might be worth a try :)

Tippon,

Yeah, I think that’s my only complaint with the episode, but it’s not a big one. There were a few places where the CGI looked off, and one or two parts where you could tell they were in front of a green screen, but other than that, I really enjoyed it :)

Tippon,

Not quite as weird as watching U&Dave 🤨

Tippon,

Yeah, exactly this. Your best bet is to sign up to one of the Linux communities here and read through some of the posts.

Tippon,

Link to the game without having to read the AI sounding article 👍

register.ubisoft.com/acsyndicate/en-US

Tippon,

Don’t forget to back it up first 👍

Tippon,

Oh thank god for that!

I forgot about Komodo dragons for a minute, and my brain went to Odo on a commode - o 🙈

Tippon, (edited )

I was massively obsessed with all kinds of computer tech in the late 90s to early 2000s, and read about Linux at some point. I tried a few distros* and enjoyed playing around with them, but a combination of them being a bit rough, and needing to run Windows for games and to support people for my work meant that I couldn’t switch.

Over the years I tried out different distros, and even had home servers running before it was cool (obligatory 😎 ), but because I knew Windows inside out, the things that I was trying to do with Linux were much easier for me on Windows.

A few years ago I bought a few older laptops that ran like dogs even under Windows 7, so tried dual booting Mint. The laptops still struggled, so I had to switch my wife’s back, but I persevered with mine. I upgraded to new to us refurbished laptops and put Mint on mine again. I also switched our media server to Xubuntu at some point over the last few years.

Windows 10 was getting slower and slower, even though it was a 7th gen i5 with an SSD and 32GB RAM, so I bit the bullet and wiped the Windows partition. I upgraded the RAM and added an SSD to my kid’s laptop and did the same. My kid had to have Windows on their desktop because of the problems with Roblox, but the success of the laptops has lead to me dual booting my desktop and trying to switch full time. I’ve got a batch scanning job to finish under Windows because I can’t get the colours to match under Linux, and I’ve got a few thousand photos to process in Photoshop, and then I’m hoping to switch full time.

I’m not an evangelist by any means, but I do wish that Linux had got to this stage a few years earlier, while I was the go to geek for so many of my friends, because I know loads of people who would have loved using it back then :)

*Hoary Hedgehog as an OS name still makes me laugh :D

Tippon,

Everybody’s hord da bord is da wird!

Doctor Who, new series order in home media server?

Yes, I keep a local copy of more or less all Doctor Who on a hard drive. No, I will not get into the particulars or ethics surrounding that. My question is only about keeping the series ordered in my Kodi home theatre setup now that apparently the show has started a new season numbering starting with the upcoming 2024 outing...

Tippon,

Have you looked on iPlayer to see if it is actually listed as a new show, as opposed to someone adding incorrect details to TMDB?

Tippon,
