If algorithms are are not the default option and are not designed to generate profit for platforms and advertisers, then perhaps they could be a healthy way to discover new content

How can you distance the browser from the company that maintains it?

glacier,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I see what you mean, but Mozilla Corp. is ultimately responsible for improving the browser. I don’t see how limiting discussion on their issues would be helpful. I use FireFox as my preferred browser but that doesn’t mean that I think Mozilla is perfect or doesn’t have their own issues.

If you didn’t read it then why did you post about it? What did you see “between the lines?”

She is not saying that Donald Trump or his supports should not have a chance to speak. She is saying that websites and other social platforms should not amplify their voices above others. Trump and his supporters are known for spreading misinformation that has led to violence, and online platforms need to do something about it. There aren’t any calls to deplatform Biden or liberals because they aren’t the ones that inspire mass shootings, hate crimes, and attempts to overthrow the government. Of course, you have the right to your own opinion regarding the article, but I feel that there are many in the community who have similar thoughts as my own.

Keyboard spyware?

I was taking a look at the Naomi Wu situation (A Chinese DIY tech youtuber who went missing after being watched by the government) and in one part they mentioned that she was concerned about her privacy, so started using Signal, but had a default chinese keyboard that had a keylogger and the police had looked into what she was...

OpenBoard (specifically the fork by Helium314 that supports gesture typing) is what I prefer.

glacier,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

AnySoftKeyboard is FOSS and supports gesture typing. It has not been updated in a while and I find it buggy.

Helium314’s OpenBoard fork is FOSS but supports Google’s proprietary gesture typing library.

FlorisBoard is FOSS and supports gesture typing, but does not have word predictions. It is being worked on.

Best way to mass delete reddit content?

I’ve decided that I want to delete my reddit account. I want to remove all of my posts and comments first. What is the best way to do this? I’ve had the account for several years so it would be too tedious to delete everything individually. So far I’ve tried the Redact android app, which did not work when I signed in. I...

More and better public transport, cycling, and walkable cities would be great. But we can’t have nice things because car and gas companies might make less profits.

People are probably upset that a platform that they have been using for years is turning to shit. Also, Musk cannot do whatever he wants to do with Twitter, he has to consider government regulations and rules from Apple or Google.

Your comment was about not understanding “why regulars are so mad.” It might be difficult to accept, but some people care about different things than you do.

glacier,

What a stupid comment. If you don’t like this, then you could move to a new country, learn a new language, find a new job, new home, but don’t even think about trying to make change, right?

BEWARE ! People who create fake email account to login to social media.

A facebook employee explained me how tracking works. Its not the email address Meta is concerned about. Its the IP, device identifiers and location. Two brands suspend advertising on X after their ads appeared next to pro-Nazi content (www.cnn.com)

At least two brands have said they will suspend advertising on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after their ads and those of other companies were run on an account promoting fascism. The issue came less than a week after X CEO Linda Yaccarino publicly affirmed the company’s commitment to brand safety for advertisers.

Google Messages RCS App Alternatives

Are there any (preferably FOSS) RCS/SMS/MMS apps as an alternative to Google Messages? I can’t convince anyone to switch to signal and would like to at least use an app that I trust. Eventually I’ll be moving to a privacy-respecting mobile OS so I’ll need an SMS app to run without Google Play Services, but I don’t want...

glacier,

Google Messages (and I think Samsung Messages) is the only app that supports RCS.

iPhone has the better reputation for privacy/security, however it is proprietary software and so no one can really tell for sure what kind of data that Apple might collect on you.

It is FireFox that has hidden settings (about:config) adjusted for privacy. It refers to using a js file such as betterfox or arkenfox, or a pre-hardened fork of FireFox (Librewolf on desktop or Mull Browser on Android). You can improve your privacy by using a hardened FireFox, however you may also encounter more issues with website compatibility. It is a trade-off, and is usually only recommended for advanced users.

glacier,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

For general use, no it is not necessary. But it depends on your threat model, or exactly how private you want to be.

I suggest looking at the pages on FireFox by Privacy Guides:

As Lemmy grows more popular and more people join, eventually more transphobes and other trolls will find a place on the site. If the mods of your instance defederate from instances that host transphobic communities or users, that would help. The instance that this community is hosted on has been doing a good job of that.

glacier,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

In general, you do have to manually download and install updates. However, some apps will automatically check and download their own updates. Also, if the APK is available on a site such as Github or Gitlab, there is an app called Obtainium that you can use. It will notify you when an update is available, and download and install it for you if you choose: github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium

glacier,

Not really, since Google develops Chromium.

FireFox receives most of their funding from Google, even though they’ve come out as opposing this plan. They have next to no market share.

The only other browser engine that can seriously compete with Chromium is Safari.

Cromite and Vanadium

I am a newcomer to the space and want to know some stuff about the mentioned mobile browsers. Information on them seems a little sparse to me. I am aware of Brave, however on my current device it is very buggy and I do not like the company’s reputation. I am aware of Firefox and it’s derivatives and the benefit they bring...

  1. Cromite is an improvement to Bromite, so yes.
  2. There are some things here or there that could be added, but it seems like a good browser for now.
  3. The current developer has worked on Bromite in the past, so if you trusted Bromite I don’t see a reason not to trust Cromite.
  4. It’s not listed because it was just released and I believe it was mentioned on Privacy Guides forums that the team is looking into it and may consider adding it to the recommended tools at some point.
  5. Yes, I currently use Cromite as a back-up browser and Mull as my main browser.

Vanadium is built specifically for security. It lacks privacy features such as an ad blocker. It is also only available on GrapheneOS. Cromite seems much easier to recommend from a privacy stand point as the use case for Vanadium is very specific.

glacier,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I have a Pixel phone, but I don’t use a custom ROM on it. I still depend on some Google services and apps for school and work.

I use NextDNS to block ads system-wide so I would probably stick with Vanadium instead of Cromite just to save memory. However, I would still use either Mull or Fennec F-droid as my main browser on mobile.

Privacy with Google's Gboard (lemm.ee)

glacier,

I don’t think it would make F-Droid itself more secure, but it’s best to get possible security updates for apps sooner with auto-updates.
