sorry for my layman terminology, but to my understanding as a coder a function has a name, parameters, arguments and operations. if sin is the name, and its parameters are side opposite and hypotenuse, and its arguments are context dependent, what is the operation itself? am i making sense?...
I don’t use any social media. Unless you count Lemmy but I don’t think that’s the same thing, we are anonymous here and I’m not posting pictures or statuses about my personal life.
In any case, social media like Facebook insta etc are doable without. The only regret I have is not having as much contact with extended family as I used to on Facebook.
I assume there are people who read these things, otherwise companies wouldn’t send me so many of them. I seem to get daily spam from literally any company I’ve ever interacted with in any way, and they are long boys full of text and pictures that Thunderbird helpfully hides from me but I presume are full of jagged brightly...
2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...
Obviously the statement can apply to either party. But the guy I replied to was praising Rep. Tlaib. For them, the alternative to not voting (or voting third party) would presumably be voting Biden, never Trump. So by not voting they are helping Trump.
As far as non swing state voters having no power… Definitely true.
But what are we supposed to do? We can vote for Trump instead or no-one instead. How does that make anything better? We agree there needs to be change, but we still have no real option here.
Yeah, basically that. I’m back at work in Windows land on a Monday morning, and pondering what sadist at Microsoft included these features. It’s not hyperbole to say that the startup repair, and the troubleshooters in settings, have never fixed an issue I’ve encountered with Windows. Not even once. Is this typical?...
I often use the network troubleshooter because I know that all that is needed is to turn the adapter off and on, which the troubleshooter will always do, saving me a couple of clicks to do it myself 🤷
I’ve always been curious, because I’m not fond of underwear, but I don’t know how people make it work. Wouldn’t you have to wash the trousers every single day? How else would you keep them fresh? Do you use special deodorant for the area or panty liners on the trousers?...
Bush’s campaign asked the Supreme Court to stop the Florida recount that Gore likely would have won (winning him the overall election). The conservative SCOTUS did what they asked.
I saw some stats on this months ago, especially after the initial explosion. I’m curious if the growth is still continuing at a good pace and also how everyone feels about the growth/activity within their communities.
I’m looking to go into Usenet / premiumize / real Debrid but I don’t know which ones are reputable. Which ones have you all had luck with or liked? And what was the cost?
I ‘upvote’ more or less all posts I interact with (sometimes I forget to vote). I feel like we should bring back open dialogues and heavily dissuade people from simply disregarding someone’s entire belief system or ideals based on 200 characters of text (an example)....
Ive always thought votes and scores should be completely hidden. Still sort the posts and comments by upvote/downvote scores, but don’t show them. Then no one can obsess over their internet points and there wouldn’t be dumb karma farming content.
When you get to the end of your life, old and tired, and you look back on all the things you did and time you spent, what will make you say: yes, I did well and it was all worth it?...
I will think it was all worth it because I lived in each moment making it the best and not fretting about how I’ll look back on it when I’m about to die
I disagree. If the letter your adding is E, it will change the promounciation of the vowel. That’s the function of the E. Adding a consonant like t doesn’t change the vowel sound (eg. How you would pronounce something like “sif” vs “sift” - no change in the vowel.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?
