@nature Short video of Ruffed Grouse /Bonasa umbellus in full display, posing in the #wind and late afternoon #AutumnSun! I suspect he was displaying because I'd just been mowing: I think the sound of motors sometimes make them think another #bird is drumming in their territory!
I'm trying Spectra as a fediverse #VideoHosting platform- let me know how it works for you!
I'm posting to YouTube as well for non-fedi connections or anyone who likes that better for viewing! https://spectra.video/w/jrxvBcDGQER3WLbZ3ixi8X
@jeanoappleseed@nature yes, it is one of the fediverse video hosting platforms- so, again, not mastodon, but working on ActivityPub, so it can interact with other platforms on fediverse. They use a different kind of hosting: peer to peer, which as I understand (which may not be well, so if anyone can add/clarify, please do!) distributes the bandwidth needed when folks view videos across the viewers networks (probably better to search peer to peer than try to make sense of my description..lol)
@jeanoappleseed@nature re: ruffed grouse- I probably have some crappy vid of them drumming, which is extra cool.. have to get that up one of these days!
#ThisWeek : #colour#foliage#seed and #sun (also rain!) for #SixOnSaturday a lot of leaves on the ground, but still colour to be found, especially in the understory and some plants /trees that turn later than others.
Top left Prunus- a plum variety growing well in the last few years-- after its pollinating mate died 🙄 Centre Ontario native Aralia racemosa ripened some berries, though the plants have mostly frozen down, now. #garden@plants#NativePlants#autumn#fall#Alberta#October cont---
1/ @plants#Houseplants from the #WindowsillGarden for a sort of #FensterFreitag - 2 of the shots (2nd n replies) have the window glass and one a bit of frame, as background (the other on a countertop, beside with window light!)
The little #Haworthia was looking colourful- Haworthiopsis now, I haven't been that active in houseplants in recent years, so still not used to the 'new' names which aren't even that new anymore...lol Views backlit and front lit. #Succulents#IndoorGardening#Alberta
@plants second #plant for #FensterFreitag Ornithogalum pyrenaicum has rarely if at all flowered for me in past, this is its third time this year! A #bulb plant it is sometimes included in Cactus and Succulent collections, it's also and #EdibleHouseplant (in this climate- probably not quite hardy, but I have not tested), but I haven't had enough material to test- prob should have a bigger pot and cushier growing conditions! #Alberta#FlowersOnFriday#BloomScrolling#florespondence
@plants@nature #SevenOnSunday is #Smoke and #Clouds and lowering #Sun #Berries turning #red and #summer#green slipping away
smoky days, wet days, clear and warm days last week, now we go into a week forecast above average, sunny and dry-- good for farmers harvesting, though chilly most nights. I should get some garden stuff wrapped up, start thinking about cutting firewood for the inevitable drop! #autumn#September#Alberta#landscape more in replies
@plants@nature#FlowersOnFriday#InsectFriday#FlyDay
This week saw days of 10-25C, nights 0 to 10C, some rainy days. The coming week is forecast for low 20sC, nights 2-7C- sounds like typical fall weather! Sunny days should be good for farmers with crops to harvest.
This week is #autumn#blues (okay, you know I grew up calling these purple, now I might say lavender or violet!) but we're still in the #pink too! #bloomscrolling#florespondence
@plants@nature
Top left- rebloom on Geranium himalayense with #bumblebee Right- native aster Canadanthus modestus in the #bush with bumblebee #WildflowerHour Centre, Achillea/Yarrow cultivars/hybrids mainly flower earlier, though there are always a few..there is another notable wave in late summer/early autumn, #gardening

@lacouvee@plants@nature It's worked well for me, quite a lot of function on the free version. I also keep the older version (still available for download, and doesn't seem to freak out the system to have both) for the clone stamp feature- useful when, for example, your camera sensor is dirty and you have black spots in the sky, ditto for shooting through windshields...lol
#FungiFriday#Mushtodon + a cheat for #ThickTrunkTuesday
I see lots of #fungi on #trees living and dead here, and lots of #mushrooms on the ground or fallen wood, but I do not often see regular looking, stemmed mushrooms on standing trees! In fact I think I've only seen it once before, and it was quite near this one- in a stand of Populus balsamifera /Balsam Poplar, in moist/mesic mixed woods on the farm. I forget, for sure, but this may be a dead standing tree. @nature#BorealForest#Alberta
@cohanf Good Morning Conan! Those look huge. Not something I’ve seen. Not that high up anyway. I think I’ll bet on the shrooms winning… 🥇Have a great Sunday! @nature
@jeanoappleseed@nature I haven't seen it much, either, still looks odd! I forget for sure, but think the tree was dead. Both of our native poplars tend to be not super long lived and end up full of fungus (though they do get larger than this one)
@plants@nature This one's an #InsectFriday + #FlowersOnFriday#combo! #bee on Carlina acaulis in the #garden
This is a #composite#flower so those 'petals' aren't, nor are they ray flowers as in many composites (sunflowers, asters, daisies etc)- those white strappy parts are papery bracts, just there to draw #pollinator attention.The actual flowers are all those tiny things in the centre- --cont-
@plants@nature though I can't say I've figured this species out, exactly-- I think those all look like pistillate flowers that are open in the outer rings of the central area, I can't tell whether the whitish middle part will be more pistils, or stamens/pollen.. Nor am I sure whether the various plants bear both ovaries and pollen, or just one or the other, or one at a time... I need to watch more closely, or read up..lol #botany#thistle
@friesen5000@nature possible-- the colours sure look like bee mimicry.. I just don't have good enough references to look it up-- Insects of Alberta website didn't have anything that really matched, I usu don't have the oomph to try bugguide- since it includes all regions, you really have to dig in to see if results are relevant! I'll try to post it also to INat see if anything comes up; I gotseveral shots, but basically all the same, so just that view.
@cohanf Gorgeous shots! Your alt-texts are so great. It's nice because I can read it while looking at the photo (except for the bottom 2 where I have to close alt-text to see it). Your rocks are absolutely gorgeous. I garden with rocks a lot here but they are not that beautiful. They are granite, but mostly gray and fairly plain. I didn't realize you were into rocks. I'll have to take photos of my stones. I've unearthed 1000s since arriving here 13 years ago. @plants@nature
