@nature Short video of Ruffed Grouse /Bonasa umbellus in full display, posing in the and late afternoon ! I suspect he was displaying because I'd just been mowing: I think the sound of motors sometimes make them think another is drumming in their territory!
I'm trying Spectra as a fediverse platform- let me know how it works for you!
I'm posting to YouTube as well for non-fedi connections or anyone who likes that better for viewing!

@jeanoappleseed @nature yes, it is one of the fediverse video hosting platforms- so, again, not mastodon, but working on ActivityPub, so it can interact with other platforms on fediverse. They use a different kind of hosting: peer to peer, which as I understand (which may not be well, so if anyone can add/clarify, please do!) distributes the bandwidth needed when folks view videos across the viewers networks (probably better to search peer to peer than try to make sense of my description..lol)

Top left Prunus- a plum variety growing well in the last few years-- after its pollinating mate died 🙄 Centre Ontario native Aralia racemosa ripened some berries, though the plants have mostly frozen down, now.

I don't usually grow tomatoes for this reason-- this is the stage they are likely to be at at this time of year, and they are likely to be frozen at any time...lol

@nature Still lots of green but it's more fun to look at ! There's more of it every day (especially with some frosts).
Plus: there are still for lots of and the year-round are in the yard more with chicks grown up (and kitty gone ☹️ )

@plants second for Ornithogalum pyrenaicum has rarely if at all flowered for me in past, this is its third time this year! A plant it is sometimes included in Cactus and Succulent collections, it's also and (in this climate- probably not quite hardy, but I have not tested), but I haven't had enough material to test- prob should have a bigger pot and cushier growing conditions!

smoky days, wet days, clear and warm days last week, now we go into a week forecast above average, sunny and dry-- good for farmers harvesting, though chilly most nights. I should get some garden stuff wrapped up, start thinking about cutting firewood for the inevitable drop!

This week saw days of 10-25C, nights 0 to 10C, some rainy days. The coming week is forecast for low 20sC, nights 2-7C- sounds like typical fall weather! Sunny days should be good for farmers with crops to harvest.
This week is (okay, you know I grew up calling these purple, now I might say lavender or violet!) but we're still in the too!

A continued typical seasonal roller coaster here- some days in mid to high 20sC (that's hottish for us), some days in the mid teens, cool nights, and a mix of sun, clouds, rain and smoke! (new normal).
Still lots of when it's warm, though starting to see some sad sluggish , and the numbers of various sorts shift (more in replies).

@plants @nature I would have had my for 26 done yesterday, but the laptop needed another reset, and haven't yet been able to re-install PhotoscapeX! Photos were already edited and I was able to use the old version Photoscape this morning to put them together, less fancy borders, but that's okay! details in replies

@lacouvee @plants @nature It's worked well for me, quite a lot of function on the free version. I also keep the older version (still available for download, and doesn't seem to freak out the system to have both) for the clone stamp feature- useful when, for example, your camera sensor is dirty and you have black spots in the sky, ditto for shooting through windshields...lol

I see lots of on living and dead here, and lots of on the ground or fallen wood, but I do not often see regular looking, stemmed mushrooms on standing trees! In fact I think I've only seen it once before, and it was quite near this one- in a stand of Populus balsamifera /Balsam Poplar, in moist/mesic mixed woods on the farm. I forget, for sure, but this may be a dead standing tree. @nature

Same mushroom and site as described in previous photo's alt text, this is a much closer view, showing some texture on the mushroom and close up of the tree bark.

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@jeanoappleseed @nature I haven't seen it much, either, still looks odd! I forget for sure, but think the tree was dead. Both of our native poplars tend to be not super long lived and end up full of fungus (though they do get larger than this one)

@plants @nature though I can't say I've figured this species out, exactly-- I think those all look like pistillate flowers that are open in the outer rings of the central area, I can't tell whether the whitish middle part will be more pistils, or stamens/pollen.. Nor am I sure whether the various plants bear both ovaries and pollen, or just one or the other, or one at a time... I need to watch more closely, or read up..lol

@friesen5000 @nature possible-- the colours sure look like bee mimicry.. I just don't have good enough references to look it up-- Insects of Alberta website didn't have anything that really matched, I usu don't have the oomph to try bugguide- since it includes all regions, you really have to dig in to see if results are relevant! I'll try to post it also to INat see if anything comes up; I gotseveral shots, but basically all the same, so just that view.

Bonus lots of them this year, contributing to probably our lowest mosquito season ever and a Lophocampa maculata the Spotted Tussock -much flashier at this stage!

Top left and right- a couple of peas- I grow a number of mange-tout /snow peas/sugar peas and soup varieties- several start out as the first and mature to the second. Most of the flowers look like these-- some combination of pink or burgundy with white/lighter. I'd grow these just for the look of the plants-- I have some with deep violet pods also.
