From a privacy standpoint, i guess. I want to support open scrobbling with listenbrainz and the account isn’t directly linked to a real acc. Why shouldn’t I/ why don’t you?
In totalitarian countries, those who listen to certain types of music are persecuted, because it links them with demografic that can be threatening to the regime. Even if your country is not totalitarian now, the existence of this data could be potentionally harmful to you in the future (just like any data, really).
I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds
I thought Alien 3 was popular. I’ll give you an unpopular opinion: Alien 4 was pretty okay and I’d watch it again. Predator 2 is an overall beloved movie, just like Terminator 2.
Sucking is subjective. The same film can not suck for you and suck for BoastfulDaedra. That’s what an unpopular opinion is about - if you disagree with them, you should upvote them!
I have mixed feelings about Disco ending. I really dug the first season’s look at a Federation at war, and following the person who arguably set that war in motion dealing with her culpability. Add to that a ship that is part weird science lab, part haunted house. And yeah, I could live with the Klingon redesign....
I really don’t like Lower Decks. Before you downvote, I would never tell anyone it’s bad or that they shouldn’t like it. I just really can’t figure out why most people seem to like it so much....
I think it’s the different humor and visual style case. And that’s ok. I don’t think you need to understand the many Trek injokes to like it- I know people who don’t know Trek and enjoy LD.
What I find interesting is that you feel the characters are cynical. I was quite suprised how endearingly idealistic the characters were, despite being written as flawed. They always make sure to do the right thing and they try very hard to better themselves. There’s a lot of character growth involved, which I much appreciate.
During the first two episodes, I also found the characters hyperactive. By the third one I adapted.
I’ve recently been looking through this unbelievably detailed list/history of the chairs appearing in all the different Trek series/movies. Thought you all might enjoy!
Yes, I meant it as a compliment, of course. Durian is cheese in the same way an avocado is butter and some pawpaw cultivars are caramel pudding. Just as Douglas Adams said, everything grows somewhere.
I think it’s about the general view on masturbation. Like I guess some people in Poland would love to tell preschoolers that masturbation is wrong and shouldn’t be done at all. If anyone teaches children it’s ok, but they shouldn’t do it in front of everyone, it’s easy to imagine it leads to the idea of a masturbation room, which can easily cause outrage in Polích population despite the fact it’s actually nothing wrong.
Not really. Babies have brown fat as default. Adults have white fat which can turn brown in response to cold exposure (not as much as in babies, so it’s also called beige fat). Brown of beige though, it works the same - there’s a high count of mitochondria in the cells and the tissue can produce heat and make you feel (and be) warmer. It also helps with weight loss, stimulates the immune system and lowers inflammation.

It’s not just about systems, It’s about conditions. Certain conditions make certain strategies more profitable - see game theory. I think low population density and hard life conditions cam lead to kindness being among the winning strategies.
Fortunately, we’re doing our best to make our life conditions harder in the future and possibly to lower the population as well!
Of course, there can be other sets of conditions that lead to kindness win. Like probably heavy cultural persecution of selfishness. The conditions can also be pretty complex. I wonder whether those things have been studied in some meaningful way.
I don’t know about spacecowboy, but I do. I still eat crabs, but I don’t think I’m superior to them morally just because I’m more intelligent or something. We’re just animals eating each other.
People can think of other species as being morally as valuable as people and not be psychotic.
They can also chose the human in the trolley problem and still feel bad for the crab. If the trolley problem included people from my familly and strangers, I’d chose my family, but not because I think it’s morally superior. I would feel bad for the other people.
The line where compassion stops can be drawn anywhere. Many people draw it where their nation or race ends. Many people draw it at the elusive pet/food distinction. Many people draw it where being mammal stops.
I don’t think drawing the line is based on moral principles. It’s practical. Sometimes you need to eat meat, sometimes you need to fight in a war. But when it comes to morality animal lives are animal lives, no matter whether it’s a crab or a white male human. They’re either all worthy of compassion or non of them is.
So that’s my point of view. And thanks for your previous answer.
Yeah, there’s a lot of very concrete stuff like: When they sought more information, Alex said that contractors would sometimes be put down and shouted at in meetings. At the same time, the manager obsessed with what the workers were doing, sometimes messaging them more than 10 times a day.
Given that racists and slavers used the “natural physical strength” of black people to justify putting them on hard labor and some medics still think that blacks has higher resistance to pain, I wonder if when black athletes started to join mixed race sport teams, some racist would have used the same “biological...
That makes no sense when you look at the reasons of why it was established this way. It would be just blind and dumb egalitarianism. People need to use intelligence in judging these things, not just emotions.
I agree. It also depends on being able to understand how those terms work and what they represent in real life, which is, unfortunately, often rather difficult for people to grasp.
‘It’s not you, it’s me’ is the gist of college student qualms with dating apps. Hook-up culture declines while young people search for genuine connection.
Spending time with people is how you get to know people better. It’s how you make friends. You can start feeling something to some of them and it’s ok to ask them out if that’s the case. There’s nothing in what jjjalljs wrote that says they were spending time with the people for the sole purpose of finding a date.
Well, getting rejected IS usually an unpleasant experience. You can value someone’s friendship and still find it an unpleasant experience to be rejected by them. Then, ideally, you act grown up about it and you can remain friends. But the feelings can be pretty unpleasant.
Where did they say they found the connection or the person unpleasant? Did I overlook something?
I don’t even know them and don’t know how they really behave, but I feel like it’s unfair to jump to the worst conclusions about someone based on just a few neutral lines of text.
The whole “bovine” joke was hilarious on one hand and a little horrifying on the other. It got me thinking: how would I feel if an animal I was about to consume came up to me enthusiastically conveying its consent for being eaten? I will be horrified, just like Arthur! But why?...
There’s the part about making a decision that takes care of most of your concerns. There’s no lesser life. Life is valuable in itself, even if it’s just one cell. But you have to decide on which one you’ll take to survive. You can base your decision on environmental factors or total number of dead creatures or anything that makes sense to you.
Are you sure about the grasses and do you have some particular species in mind? As far as I know, they tolerate grazing, but it’s preferable for them to not be parcially eaten. Apple, on the other hand, are so delicious because they’re meant to be eaten (to spread the seads with the poop). Rocket lettuce definitely prefers not being eaten. The flavour we find nice was meant to deter us from eating the leaves.
I don’t know why all the downvotes. This is at least partly true! Plant senses and communication research had been a taboo among scientists for many decades, but there was a breakthrough recently and we finally have some interesting results. It was proven that plants can sense soundwaves (like insect buzzing, they don’t care about music), light of different colors, carnivorous plants can taste (and decide whether they really caught their prey and should start digesting), they sense when they are harmed (a sense that serves the same purpose as our pain), they smell other plants and they have a sense of time and rythm. They can react to signals from other plants. Whether they think and feel pain depends on your definition of thinking and feeling pain (and to what degree your definition is anthropomorphic).

There are countries where right turn on red is prohibited and it makes no problems with traffic flow. Also, change is possible, people are able to get used to new rules.
