Bookshelf speakers sound worse on linux

I have a budget PC and edifier r1280t bookshelf speakers. From day 1 of building my PC about 6 months ago, I was using fedora. I also have a MacBook pro and soon I realised that the speakers sound much better when connected to MacBook pro. I always thought maybe my motherboard dac is not good enough to drive these speakers. But...

It is going to be difficult to troubleshoot without understanding what is lacking in sound quality between Linux and Windows.

What songs are you comparing with? Use the same set of songs on Windows and Linux.

I can probably look this up if nobody knows but what kind of sound chip is on the ASRock b450m? (Just in case there are some features the Linux driver isn’t making use of for who knows what reason).

Moving to Arch/EndeavorOS from PopOS?

I’ve been using PopOS for a few months now, and I’m interested in Arch, but I’m worried about whether or not I have enough experience to do that successfully. Also, I have an Nvidia GPU until I start a new build in the next year or so. I don’t know if that’ll be a problem in Arch. It was a major issue with Fedora for...

My only experience in the last decade is Mint and lately Nobara (Fedora 37 plus tweaks for gaming). Mint was pretty rock solid. I rarely rebooted except for updates. Occasionally Cinnamon would lock up… because reasons? It was too rare to worry about. The only complaint was that the packages I used were pretty out of date. I switched only because the 5.15 kernel didn’t support my AMD RX6600 (or I should say there was an issue with power save where the display wouldn’t show back up even after reboot).

As long as it doesn’t cause massive instability I would probably prefer a rolling update. Upgrading Mint every few years was a bit intrusive.

Gartner Hype Cycle. I think we are getting close to the “peak of inflated expectations” on generative AI for sure. I feel like ML has kind of been around for ages now but maybe companies are just treating everything as an AI/ML nail now. Idk.

You’re not alone. I have moved farther left the older I get and the more I learn.

I think some of us are traumatized by Reddit and Trump. Because for every person offering legit, good faith, well thought out criticism of Biden or the Democratic party (and there are plenty of things to criticize), I could show you about 1000 shills, bots, The Donald magats, and so on, following the alt right playbook like a fucking bible.

You call 'em what you will. Call me one if it feels right. But I don’t see viable options in the short term at this dark point in the nation’s history.

I think long term it is going to have to be a bottom up involvement in politics to maybe try to put the corporate bootlickers in the Democratic party. It’s going to have to be a long fight to fix the judiciary, undo citizens united, fix the corrupt, partisan SCOTUS, reform campaign finance, implement something other than first past the post voting, fix gerrymandering, break up oligopolies, and a million other things. I’m too tired to list it all.

Of course one could argue that centrists aren’t the right folks to fight fascism. And might enable it. Anyway…

I don’t think “burns herself” is quite the turn of phrase I would’ve chosen but then I don’t like the taste of boot leather so… yeah.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

Possibly. Or maybe you’re more aware of it now.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

Yup

I mean yeah if they’re assholes sure. And many (most?) are no doubt. Yet I have friends who are landlords and they’re not fucking monsters or I wouldn’t be friends with them.

I think this reductive take of yours feels good to type but if we want to address the problems of housing, I think a more nuanced understanding is needed.

If you’re like a friend of mine, it’s just a family that owns a couple extra houses (withholding judgment on that) and let’s say the husband is out of work the wife makes like $50k/yr, and you’re on the hook for two mortgages (say $5000) and now the sewer pipe to the sewer main needs replacing at a cost of $15,000, your car breaks and needs $1000 of repairs.

If it comes to it and you don’t have the cash or credit to deal with it, nobody is going to prioritize the tenant’s sewer over their kids having a house to live in and food to eat. When times are so desperate you have to choose, you’re choosing your own family. (The assholes always choose themselves under all circumstances of course)

Idk wtf the answer is but housing is a human right and the idea that anyone should be unsheltered is fucked.

Both friends bought another house and rented their original. Some inherit a house. Because putting your money in savings like we used to in the 70s and 80s when you got rock solid perfectly safe 2-5% return hasn’t been a thing for 20+ years.

Then you have corporations with the capital to be able to snap up houses after the 2008 predatory lending fiasco (thanks to unregulated capitalism). With low interest rates that ended up being the best play and then that ended up pricing out regular people.

Yeah we need more supply but the equation there doesn’t really favor building affordable housing because reasons I don’t understand well enough to try to talk to. Some claim too much regulation but that claim is usually the kind of bullshit that corpos/rich and their shills spout to be able to deregulate and better screw us peons. So I’m skeptical.

Idk what the solution is because I don’t understand the very complex problem well enough. But I know that “landlords eat babies” isn’t that helpful because the whole housing thing (rental, ownership) is a train wreck systemically.

Generative AI training is not the same thing as human inspiration. And transformative work has this far has only been performed by a human. Not by a machine used by a human.

Clearly using a machine that simply duplicates a work to resell runs afoul of copyright.

What about using a machine that slightly rewords that work? Is that still allowed? Or a machine that does a fairly significant rewording? What if it sort of does a mashup of two works? Or a mashup of a dozen? Or of a thousand?

Under what conditions does it become ok to feed a machine with someone’s art (without their permission) and sell the resulting output?

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

That’s a terrible analogy.

Reading a book designed to instruct you how to do tasks is not the same thing as training generative AI with novels, say, to write a novel for you.

The user of the AI benefits from the work and talent of the authors with little effort of their own.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

Depends on how close it is… But at least they are doing the effort of writing vs merely coming up with prompts for the AI.

This is what systemic racism looks like in real life.

Why do male and female students have different dress codes?

Sexism.

And yes I’m fucking up to here with this authoritarian bullshit not to mention the bigotry.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

The dress codes even in the district my kid is in (and we’re definitely bright blue territory) is still sexist af. It’s absolutely insane.

Ring ring.

Torture: ✅

Indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets: ✅

Both have been going on for a while.

But I suppose you’ll just plug your ears and close your eyes and tell me this is ProPaGanDa or some shit?

Oh and Bush is a fucking bastard, don’t get me wrong. But so is Putin.

So in other words it is happening in Ukraine despite the suggestion to the contrary by the person to whom I was responding.

Civilian deaths and torture are abhorrent no matter what country perpetrates them and no matter for what claimed reason they do so.

It might be quicker to show that there is such a policy in place or else a de facto tolerance of it.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

Now that is a clear claim and worth chewing on. Why ghost didn’t say that idk. Appreciate you bringing up this point.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

I understand where you are coming from. Edit: I mean with regards to why you’re asking for the proof as you did.

If you don’t mind indulging my question…

believes in such things as “policies” as existing outside of the material existence of the actions, which is a super liberal viewpoint and which communists need to learn to rebut

I found this interesting.

Can you expound on the connection between “liberal viewpoint” and this idea of “policies being relevant despite evidence of actual actions to the contrary” (my summary).

I guess I’m trying to understand what makes this a liberal viewpoint or why do you classify it as such? Or is it a consequence of the undue trust given to governments with said policies?

I guess I am just trying to understand the viewpoints of my communist fellow humans here on Lemmy.

In my mind, I call their viewpoint naive and what I would term de facto policy is something that comes from observation and accompanying cynicism. Maybe that’s an engineering viewpoint or more likely a viewpoint a typical infosec person like me holds lol. It’s just looking at how the world is and believing actions > words…

In other words I don’t ascribe my viewpoint or theirs to a political ideology. Though I could see how some ideologies might tend to influence such viewpoints. Does that make sense?

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

No prob!

agent_flounder,

Appreciate the clear explanation.
