Cyberpunk runs 30% faster on linux than on windows 11 (m.youtube.com)

The YouTube channel “Maximum Fury” conducted a technical test of the new Cyberpunk add-on called “Phantom Liberty” on an older AMD hardware system, testing it separately on Linux and Windows 11. The Linux system, specifically the Fedora distribution called Nobara, performed significantly better, delivering 31% more...

Ha that hit hard. This is basically the system I just upgraded to. Well at least it’ll run the game well.

Are attention spans actually shortening?

So a view I see a lot nowadays is that attention spans are getting shorter, especially when it comes to younger generations. And the growing success of short form content on Tiktok, Youtube and Twitter for example seems to support this claim. I have a friend in their early 20s who regularly checks their phone (sometimes...

Ok well 2001 was kind of an outlier… you’re not wrong. It was slow when I watched it in the 90s lol.

But, watch something like The Maltese Falcon. Which I did recently.

I had no issue following. It didn’t plod along in my view (of course I’m middle aged and don’t do tiktok). But it also wasn’t rapid fire constant clamor. There was space to absorb and reflect as the story evolved. And you need that space because it’s mentally challenging.

One thing that hit hard is how it is a good, interesting story above all else. Definitely gives theater vibes and made me realize how hollow a lot of movies are.

Anyway. There are lots of examples from the 60s and 70s that are slower paced and a lot less busy and chaotic than modern films for sure.

I’ve been meaning to watch that one.

Our newer, faster CPU is complemented by a newer, faster GPU: Broadcom’s VideoCore VII, developed here in Cambridge, with fully open source Mesa drivers from our friends at Igalia.

Idk about fully but the above is a good change imo

We’d like to thank you: we’re going to ringfence all of the Raspberry Pi 5s we sell until at least the end of the year for single-unit sales to individuals, so you get the first bite of the cherry.

I guess because it’s a cheap way to do embedded computing? Idk.

For all of us bitter people who couldn’t get an RPi 3 let alone 4 for less than a fortune during the recent dark times…

We’d like to thank you: we’re going to ringfence all of the Raspberry Pi 5s we sell until at least the end of the year for single-unit sales to individuals, so you get the first bite of the cherry.

So I will probably preorder one because why not.

My main uses for them weren’t ever desktop but tinkering with simple robotics / telepresence, automation, aprs / mapping, 3d printing (octoprint). Seems like the 5 is overkill for that. I guess there’s always the pi zero.

FYI there’s a duplicate sentence there:

Cuz I’m sick of not really owning my media. I have to hope the streaming company stays around, doesn’t magically lose records or my purchase, etc.

A stray canine in Brazil has turned out to be a whole new breed of adorable. According to a genetic study, the female animal is most probably the first of its kind – a hybrid between a South American pampas fox and a dog. Otherwise known as a dogxim.

More reading social media posts than reading books, probably. If one doesn’t make the connection between the sounds and the proper written word, then you might be more likely to make mistakes like “would of” instead of “would’ve” (which is my pet peeve, incidentally)

Multiple times since 2016 it has hit home like never before: anything related to freedom and democracy has to be continually fought for. When we stop being vigilant (say from 1974-2015) those that seek money and power above all else chip away at everything until they get it.

Damn that’s impressive. I had a poodle as a kid that had a vocab … but not that big! She knew 2 or 3 toys and family members and a couple basic things like outside or food. If she heard the word cat in casual conversation she would go looking and barking at the back sliding glass door.

I’m definitely woke af. And proud of it.

I have come to think that when profits are at odds with health, happiness, the good of society and humanity, then either a non profit foundation needs to be running it or it needs to be in the hands of the government—but a much less corrupt one. And I believe oligopolies need to be broken up and anti trust laws greatly expanded and enforced. Then we can deal with the oligopoly / plutocracy. We set a maximum wage (including all earnings) and tax 100% above that. Penalties for regulatory breaches include jail time. For corporations. With corporations reigned in, oligopolies and oligarchies crumbled, we can prevent regulatory capture and corruption. Campaign finance is abolished and it is paid for out of public funds. We abolish first past the post voting in favor of scientifically determined better alternatives to ensure voters actually have a variety of choices.

Idk wtf that makes me except maybe a ranting lunatic lol

I assumed “thought about being a different gender” in this context meant “actively desiring it irrespective of negative impacts of sexism and gender roles.” Such that, even if one could magically take away those negative impacts, the desire would remain.

For what it’s worth I (cis, a man) have felt less than a man on occasion and have always been more of the quiet, sensitive, bookish type. Sure, I have pondered being another gender briefly here or there – as a thought experiment or trying to empathize, perhaps – but I have never seriously wanted to trade being a man for any reason. I want to stay how I am, actually.

Hopefully this is helpful to some.

I think that’s true of any technology that goes mainstream. New tech is evolved to where the end user doesn’t need to know how it works to use it.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

That’s not enshittification it is a normal progression of tech to make it useful for a wider audience. Otherwise we would be typing a byte at a time with front panel toggle switches like on a PDP-8.

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

Well it is an anecdote. Can’t draw any real conclusions there. Too many variables. How old were the kids when adopted? Were they abused or neglected or adopted right at birth? How well did the parents treat the adopted vs non-adopted kids? Were the adopted kids healthy at birth or could fetal alcohol syndrome have played a factor? Were there issues with discrimination based on race? And myriad other questions…
