Good read. I’m in the same situation: bought a house with 100A service and want to replace my hot water heater and furnace with heat pump models of both. Everything else is already electric, so I’ve been debating the need to upgrade the panel before replacing my last two gas appliances. (I think I was told that my drop can support 200A)

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’m already electrically budgeted for central A/C, so I figure replacing the existing unit with a heat pump would be more or less “break-even”. The heat pump may even end up being slightly more efficient than the 8 y/o AC unit I have now :)

So I guess the only new load would be the heat pump water heater.

I do plan to get an EV and install a charger in the next 5 years or so, so I’ll likely end up having to upgrade my panel for 200A anyway.

Large appliances (water heaters, furnaces, ovens, heat pumps/air conditioners, clothes dryers) typically use 240v and have dedicated circuits but yeah, everything else is 120v.

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

It’s closer to 48kw. North American (residential) power is weird. lol.

We use what’s called split phase where basically you have three wires coming into your electric panel: two “hot” ones each carrying 120v and one ground.

The breaker box is staggered so that every other slot is powered by one or the other 120v inputs. To get 240v for large appliances, we use big, double-breakers which connect both of the 120v inputs together.

The rest of the 120v circuits are staggered across the two 120v inputs. e.g. If one of the two “hot” cables was disconnected, roughly half the outlets in your house would still work.

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

It is but thankfully most people never use anywhere near that much (at least, normal people lol).

Completely unrelated to the meme, but I love how folks on Lemmy will frequently provide alt/descriptive text for images. When I have to deal with user-provided images for my org’s website, it’s like pulling teeth to get them to provide anything at all.

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Same - I don’t shame anyone for not doing it, but I do try to call out/praise when it’s done and/or done exceptionally well. Hopefully that helps.

Sure doesn’t seem like it. I went to a lot of effort to make the best of the mod API calls that are available and they go and remove a useful chunk of it. 😒

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Then join an instance where scores are disabled if you don’t like them. :shurg: Choosing an instance where downvotes are disabled is already a preference, so making the score aggregates optional is completely in line with that.

You’re already on .ml, so they’d have them disabled given it’s run by the devs who have removed the data from the API, so nothing would change for you.

The whole shtick of Lemmy is run your instance the way you want to run it. The removal of the scores from the API seems heavy-handed and feels like the devs are forcing their preferences/values on others.

I’m not quite as old as my old TV references make me out to be, but random thought: Was she TV’s first cougar?

ptz,

Ah, gotcha. I wasn’t factoring in Soap Operas, just the prime-time stuff I grew up with. You’re probably correct.

Not sure what’s going on with lemm.ee. The admin there used to be active in the admin chats but hasn’t been around much at all lately. I know he mentioned he got laid off from the startup company he was working for, and that’s when he mostly disappeared (he’s responded to @'s a few times so he’s still around). Maybe he’s just busy with job hunting or his new job doesn’t afford him much time for Lemmy?

Depends on the UI.

In the feed, or rather the API endpoint that populates the feed, it is up to the client to combine duplicate; there’s no cross post data attached to the post objects until you click into a post.

I loved my V3m back in the day and would do all the SEEM edits and replace the locked-down Verizon firmware with the fully-featured USCC version for my friends. Good times. Who besides Verizon would put Bluetooth behind a paywall? :sigh:

Anyway, I’m about 2 years overdue in replacing my current daily driver. Wonder what the odds are that the Razr Plus is both bootloader unlockable and will (eventually) be supported by LineageOS?

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Good to know, thanks!

Ive been intrigued by foldables but have been waiting for the durability kinks to be worked out before indulging. Gonna probably wait a bit longer until there’s some decent de-googled ROMs available before I dive in.

Ooh. I’ve been using Snapcast for my multi-room audio, but this seems more versatile. Going to check it out for sure.

Have you used it? Curious about latency. Snapcast has about a 1 second buffer which makes it not ideal for anything beyond music casting.

ptz, (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Latency is low enough to not be noticeable when playing video on my laptop and streaming audio to the desktop.

That’s basically my use case. Want to use my HTPC as the source and some RasPi’s or repurposed thin clients as the sinks - pretty much what I do now with MPD and Snapcast. I absolutely do not want to have to mess with audio offset settings in Emby to keep the dialog in sync. lol

I’ve only skimmed the docs (holidays are a huge time sink haha), but do you know if it can do one-to-many or just one-to-one? Like, can I have one source and multiple receivers? The docs seemed to imply it could do one-to-many, but I didn’t get to dive into them deep enough.

Getting kicked out of junkyards (right to repair needs to evolve)

I’ve been kicked out of local junkyards ½ dozen times or so now. It’s a tricky game of trying to reach the waste pile when no one is looking, and also seeing who is on duty in hopes of at least ensuring that the same person doesn’t experience the pattern of kicking you out multiple times. Perhaps they would get aggressive...

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Off-topic, but this post reminded me of the show Scrapheap Challenge (Junkyard Wars in the US) and how much I miss it.

Back on topic, I fully agree. The best we really have is that it’s not illegal (at least in my area) to pick up junk people have set out as trash before it’s picked up by the sanitation crew. It’s not uncommon for vacuum cleaners, lamps, or couches to disappear while the rest of your garbage is left behind for regular trash pickup.

Google’s sales pitch for Manifest V3 is that, by limiting extensions, the browser can be lighter on resources, and Google can protect your privacy from extension developers.

Emphases mine. Funny, I use extensions to protect my privacy from Google.

Chromium needs to be fully divested from Google. End of story. There’s too much conflict of interest in letting the world’s largest advertising company have this much control over one of the two major browsers. If you don’t see the problem with that, imagine if Taco Bell was also the world’s largest producer of anti-diarrhea medicine.

ptz,

Tell me about it. Every time I implement some new thing in my app:

Firefox/Chrome: You cast HTML5 video. Critical hit!

Safari: Your spell fizzles…

ptz, (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Not looking to start a flame war here, but if that’s the case, then Apple’s had even longer to get it right. lol. I implemented my video containers using the MDN specs which worked for both FF and Chrom(e/ium) as-is. Had to read through Apple-specific specs to figure out why Safari wouldn’t render them (not autoplay but render at all).

While it’s not quite “IE all over again”, it’s in the ballpark where I have to make special concessions to support a specific browser that is only offered on one company’s platform. History may not be repeating, but it’s certainly rhyming.

You either vote for Biden or you get Trump. Abstaining from the vote you get Trump. MAGA will have a 100% turnout for their God Emperor.

Also, voting 3rd party in the general election…you get Trump.

Our two-party system is awful and failing us horribly. If I had to guess, they’re just as frustrated as I am and that’s the only way they can blow off steam; make idle threats about “taking my business vote elsewhere”.

Hopefully it’s just frustrated, idle rhetoric and they show up at the polls to vote for the only sane option that has a real chance.

I saw it a year or two ago, and I don’t remember if it was a meme or a real product (either way, I want one), but it was a Crossfield-class pizza cutter. Anyone know if that’s real?

Edit: Nevermind, it is real. Had to lift my Amazon blockade, but they have it. I don’t think it’s officially licensed though :/

Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year (9to5mac.com)

In a surprising move, Apple has announced today that it will adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard. The feature will launch via a software update “later next year” and bring a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users....

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah. My iphone fanatic of a friend was complaining about something on hers the other day, and was like “Why doesn’t Apple just do {whatever}?”

My reply was basically that Apple didn’t become a trillion dollar company by giving customers what they want. They became a trillion dollar company by telling customers what they want and marketing the crap out of it.

ptz,

Apple: (Finally supports a standard the rest of the world has been using for years) Look at us. So brave, so innovative. Also, we removed another port. Here’s a link to a $29 dongle in the Apple store.

I’m for leaving them in, at least the minor ones. We’ve lived with them this long. Plus, it’s always fun to spot the production goofs.

Re: Terok Nor paging sound on Defiant. I vaguely recall that, and I think my mind just subconsciously hand waved it. lol. Something about it being akin to DS9’s custom ringtone.

I think I would be okay for a major correction. Like if the original version used the wrong transporter effect or something.

ptz,

Unforgivable.

Related: All bootloaders should be unlockable if the device owner opts to do that. Manufacturers/carriers should not be involved in that process at all.

I get most of mine from the grocery store. When they’re on sale, they’re usually almost half off, so I buy several and stock up.

I enjoyed Sphere…

The novel was great. The movie…eh, not so much (IMO, anyway). Not even the combined powers of Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L Jackson, and Queen Latifah could really make it work for me. There’s just too much subtlety in the book that didn’t make it to the screen.

ptz,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Oh, I didn’t mean it was perfect, just acceptable. lol

I’m still holding out for a streaming mini-series that is a 1:1 adaptation of the book. I just can’t let that dream go.

I didn’t see a bug reported for it yet, but I was able to confirm it on Voyager as well as in the wild. Created bug .
