MNByChoice,

Very true! I love thinking about ancient greeks complaining about “kids these days.”

historyhustle.com/2500-years-of-people-complainin…

MNByChoice, (edited )

I have never read them except out of Boredom

Fun Fact: this has always been true. That and avoiding the children. In the days of outhouses, sitting on the toilet for hours was not great. So they read newspapers.

Edit: I was more being funny about wasting time in the bathroom too avoid child responsibility. People have often needed long times to make things work. The person that responded to me had some great points.

MNByChoice,

You are right. Thank you

MNByChoice,

F-Droid is fantastic for privacy respecting software.

Tiny Travel Tracker (Secure long term GPS tracker and log) The description seems very focused on keeping things private and as a Google Maps location history. I have not used it.

MNByChoice,

Thank you for pointing that out. With 66 open issues, it would seem helpful to continue maintaining. Ah, well, free code is hard to keep working on.

MNByChoice,

ZFS is a large consu6 of RAM. I would think putting swap in ZFS is a terrible idea. I have not checked current recommendations.

MNByChoice,

That is why you’ll see the southern states being referred to as red states today, because they are gerrymandered to guarantee Republican victories.

WTF?!? No!

The maps presented on election night had pseudo random colors. One color for Democrats, one for Republicans, and a third for other parties. These tended to change with TV network and election year.

In 2000, the election went on and on and on due to the tight results. In that year the Republicans were assigned Red and the Democrats blue on many networks. Things were contentious.

From that point on those colors were then used as shorthand for areas that voted for Republicans or Democrats. Things continues to present and Republicans tend to wear red, and Democrats blue.

Publishing this and going to find a source.

Edit source: smithsonianmag.com/…/when-republicans-were-blue-a…

Actually a great read.

MNByChoice,

If you can, perhaps talk with your boss about the situation. “I am hungry as my apartment building had a fire and all my food might be covered in toxins”, is a one off that gets some extra dispensation.

Edit: your response as 6 hours ago. You either are the chips, or are at work.

MNByChoice,

The bright colors. Something has changed and suddenly neon jackets and shirts were available. It felt very optimistic and futuristic. Everything was briefly neon. It was glorious.

It was not long after that pants got huge and clothing got dark, subtle, and depressed. Like everyone wants to be an adult and not an easy target for the random gunmen.

Shit. School shootings weren’t a thing. I miss that not being a thing.

Neon all of the things!

Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

Title. “lmao internet points” and all, but what is the point of participating in a community that sees assumptions and other commonly non-harmful commentaries/posts as “bad” this easily? Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like...

MNByChoice,

True.

A case can be made for a large number of buttons. I wonder if the extra complications of multiple buttons would have a good payoff.

MNByChoice,

The espresso machine next to the drip coffee maker also has issues.

MNByChoice,

Thank you! That is a well done song.

For those wondering, the supposed timeline is a single night. I tend to agree with Spock.

MNByChoice,

Can this be gamed for massive overtime?

Also, that sucks and seems borderline illegal. Obviously, that depends on your local laws and socioeconomic status.

MNByChoice,

I always assumed it was a comparison between the West and the USSR. One could swap the populations and few would notice. It was a culture and leadership thing.

In Next Gen the USSR was gone, so they no longer needed that angle.

This is all assumption though.

MNByChoice,

Trust is super interesting!

MNByChoice,

I like it. It is a bit heavy handed with the philosophy. I would love to see more.

MNByChoice,

Didn’t the use to put the astronauts into quarantine for a few days prior to launch. It avoids hangovers and the flu, in space.

MNByChoice,

How much is that in dollars?

defensenews.com/…/congress-authorizes-8-defense-b…

$817 billion in Defense Department spending For 2022.

2% is then $16.34 billion.

How much of that on other units? Please add those below.

MNByChoice,

A big obsidian orb!

MNByChoice,

OR, and hear me out. I will get a different job that pays more with a title bump, and you can hire someone else to fix it.

MNByChoice,

Sadly, message does not list a dollar amount. Replies are great though. Lots of pointing out the listed items are small compared to corporation size.

MNByChoice,

Great point. IBM has a long history of squeezing every penny from their customers. At one corner job, IBM had to come onsite a few times a year to perform system updates. We were not allowed by IBM to upgrade the OS ourselves.

Pluralistic: The real AI fight (27 Nov 2023) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow (pluralistic.net)

Last week’s spectacular OpenAI soap-opera hijacked the attention of millions of normal, productive people and nonsensually crammed them full of the fine details of the debate between “Effective Altruism” (doomers) and “Effective Accelerationism” (AKA e/acc), a genuinely absurd debate that was allegedly at the center of...

MNByChoice,

Orange Site is currently upset and turned off by Cory’s view. I liked how he ended the piece:

It’s because I’m a materialist that my primary concerns about AI are things like the climate impact of AI data-centers and the human impact of biased, opaque, incompetent and unfit algorithmic systems – not science fiction-inspired, self-induced panics over the human race being enslaved by our robot overlords.

MNByChoice,

I will not be going inside that. It does not look safe.

MNByChoice,

Chocolate chip sure. Almond cookies? I am just offended.

MNByChoice,

That is a hard 49, especially for a billionaire.

MNByChoice,

A good number of people assume retail workers choose to be there and are getting overtime.

Clearly untrue for most.

MNByChoice,

That is a great i idea.

MNByChoice,

I have heard that part of the point is so that parents cannot understand the conversation. It is not a side effect, it is the point.

MNByChoice,

Elon very likely lives in his own bubble with no one around that can disagree.

A millionaire could surround themselves with other millionaires and get a reality check. There are few billionaires and trillionaires, and they are likely surrounded by people that depend on the billionaires for their life’s stability.

This is a good argument for taxing billionaires heavily. They should not exist and will be destructive as they loose touch with reality.

MNByChoice,

I have noticed that my phone will autocorrect/misrecognize some swears. Fuck is often duck.

MNByChoice,

I am not going to login to see it, but I appreciate your effort. 😁

MNByChoice,

No, we cannot just put every random library on the server. Please stick to the stable ones the team picked, not random ones you just heard about and wanted to try in production.

Docker enters the chat: Now you can!

MNByChoice,

Shit that sounds familiar. Like the jpg was large enough to push the binary into some random memory region.

MNByChoice,

They gave Prince Wednesday his own spinoff? Wild.

MNByChoice,

An article from early November about what Qatar is doing in the situation., which would appear to be a lot. www.npr.org/2023/…/qatar-israel-gaza-hamas-war

MNByChoice,

X, the former Twitter, or another company called X?

MNByChoice,

Can we just start putting the references in with spoiler tags? Or just in?

The fuck is going on?

MNByChoice,

Thank you!

MNByChoice,

When he dies, I expect his family will be sad for a while and bury him.

If he retires, his family will be pretty happy for him.

Other people will keep doing Linux stuff.

MNByChoice,

I have been meaning to do this. I have found that local politicians are exceptionally cheap. Buy a few, and hope that one makes it big.

MNByChoice,

Too much butter and too much sugar look the same on my phone. What is the difference?

MNByChoice,

Thank you!

MNByChoice,

Fantastic link! I had started reading on Reddit, and I am happy to see this elsewhere.

MNByChoice,

Late to the party, but I hope this is helpful.

A 2020 article about a proposed passive house apartment complex.

Surprisingly, they seem to have built it on one can rent an apartment.

Maybe someone in NYC, near East 11th, can comment on how it is actually going.
