OhmsLawn,

Two of my favorites are already up. Here’s some more.

Professor Carolin Crawford’s Gresham stint is my all-time favorite astronomy lecture series. It’s somewhat outdated, especially on the topic of Pluto, but fundamentally, it’s outstanding.

From Brady Haran, Sixty Symbols covers physics and astrophysics, and Deep Sky Videos covers astronomy.

Dr Becky does current events in astrophysics and astronomy.

The Royal Institution, and The Perimeter Institute offer a lot of good lectures, but aren’t exclusively astro.

Likewise, for a more explainer-style, and not exclusively astro, there’s Fermilab and The Science Asylum .

OhmsLawn,

Anton Petrov is an absolute gem, knowledgeable and likable and insanely productive.

OhmsLawn,

I love that channel, but yeah. I’d like to see them revisit some of the earlier topics. The most recent videos are sometimes a bit overwhelming.

OhmsLawn,

I’m honestly uncomfortable with TLDR. I haven’t checked up, but every time I watch an episode, it just feels off.

OhmsLawn,

On that topic, Anton Petrov is legit. Daily videos on math, physics, and cosmology. Less frequent but better produced, Sixty Symbols is one of Brady Haran’s channels at University of Nottingham.

OhmsLawn,

I think an implosion is more than that.

It’s not the expression of opinion that sinks a channel, but a pivot from topic-focused to issue-focused. AvE didn’t go downhill for getting frustrated about the pandemic, he fundamentally changed the focus of his channel.

It’s one of the things I appreciate about the better firearms channels. I know they’re probably unpalatably conservative (to my taste), but by largely sticking to a topic (rather than the multitude of issues that are doubtless important to them), they manage to reach a wider audience.

OhmsLawn,

Nothing, but on my way home I was listening to this Kola Nut mix of 90’s Bristol DnB.

It’s dope.

OhmsLawn,

I think the real unpopular opinion here is indifference. Hawaiian pizza is pizza. Pizza is good, so Hawaiian pizza is good. It’s the same feeling I have about a cheeseburger pizza I got from Telepizza in Spain.

It’s pizza. Unless it’s raw, rotten, or soaking wet, we’re going to have a good time.

OhmsLawn,

I don’t remember when, but there was this PBS interview with a chronic pain specialist, talking about his inability to effectively medicate pain away. The line I remember is “You have to stop worshipping the volcano gods of pain.” I’ve kept that line in my back pocket for years.

That said, there’s a massive problem with both exploitation and managerial incompetence in the professional world. I’d never suggest putting up with that any longer than is financially necessary. Being overworked, underpaid, or boxed-in is a poison that eats away at your future.

OhmsLawn,

Doesn’t say if they’ll exempt luxury brands. I’d be willing to bet they do.

OhmsLawn,

Here’s the trick I used when I was young and poor. I worked for cash with an estate liquidator, and I saw the passion some of the customers had for their collectables. I decided to develop that flavor of passion for a collection of $20 bills.

For me, the hardest part of saving money (assuming it’s even a possibility) is avoiding the trap of saving to spend. The savings itself has to become a goal, and that can be really, really boring.

Another tactic I used was to always save double the value of a large planned purchase: if I started with $500 and I wanted a $200 item, I’d save until I had $900 before spending. That way my stack never felt like it was diminishing.

OhmsLawn,

If I’m not actively using a tab, I’ll close it, unless I’m working on a longer term project. Right now I’m planning a fairly long trip to South America, so I’ve had several travel sites up for multiple weeks.

Edit: am X/millennial cusp.

OhmsLawn,

Dead. I’m laying on my left side.

OhmsLawn,

I just went through yesterday and killed a couple of these. Unfortunately, Airbnb retained my photo after I pulled the permission.

OhmsLawn,

Password manager. Now if I could just get Google to purge all my old passwords, that would be great.

OhmsLawn,

I do.

Why do many microwave ovens hum in an interval of a minor 7th?

Something that I’ve noticed across most of the microwave ovens that I’ve used is that when they hum while cooking food, I can pick out 2 distinct tones. One of them is pretty clearly 60 120 hz, the 2nd harmonic of the AC power frequency. The other is consistently a minor 7th above that (which would be somewhere around...

Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?

The Infinity Blade or Minigore series, for example, or anything made by Illusion Labs. These games are genius and most consoles don’t even have a touch screen or utilise it well like some smartphone games do....

OhmsLawn,

The rapacious micro transactions we see in games today started on mobile. People associate mobile games with that model. I have some mobile games, but these days they’re all premium. The gacha system just starts to feel like work to me after a while.

As to the stares, non gamers always sneer at gamers. You’re playing games in public. They’d probably give you the same looks if you had a handheld console.

OhmsLawn,

TJ’s triple cream is sinful and basically the same price as normal cheese.

OhmsLawn,

Absolutely. I’ll just go through quarters of that stuff without a second thought, but I never remember that when I’m at the store.

OhmsLawn,

I make sure I always have an unopened jar. As soon as I open it, I put another jar on the shopping list. Check out some Puerto Rican dishes. Arroz con Gandules, etc. Great use of green olives in those.

A tanker truck loaded with cigarettes was caught at the "Krasnoilsk" checkpoint on its way out of Ukraine. (files.catbox.moe)

OhmsLawn,

Probably dodging taxes, possibly pilferage. War zones smoke a lot of cigarettes.

OhmsLawn,

I had clear, salty alpaca soup. It was food. I was in the Andes at some roadside truck stop. It was memorable, but the steak sounds much better.

OhmsLawn,

That really depends on what my personal beliefs are being compared to. Compared to none, or to benign afterlife belief structures, probably very little. Compared to Hell-and-damnation or to Valhalla? Considerably more.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

OhmsLawn,

I’m not party affiliated, but I will vote for the Democratic Party candidate. It wouldn’t make any difference in my state, but I do it anyway. My state doesn’t swing, so I will probably send some money to Democratic candidates in closest out-of-state Senate races (I don’t waste money on sure winners or losers).

It’s a hold-my-nose thing, since I’m really only about 50% in agreement with them. I tend to swing farther left on certain issues and near-libertarian-right on others. My primary concern at this point is averting a slide further into fascism. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in formerly-fascist countries and it’s a messy thing to untangle. The scars last for generations.

OhmsLawn,

No, you’re right to set boundaries.

People will always want you to do stuff that’s outside of your classification. The key is to be “too busy” when it doesn’t advance your career, and willing to learn when it does. Ideally, you don’t have to directly say no. When you hit the balance right, they stop asking.

OhmsLawn,

I think the language you just used answered your own question: “manage to get”. Those platforms, with likes and retweets, boosts (and to some degree, Karma) are competitive, everyone vying for increased following. Some might follow, comment, retweet or boost genuinely. Most are, at least subconsciously, looking to expand their personal influence.

That attitude obviously also exists here, but it’s tempered by the lack of an endgame. It’s harder to become Internet famous without a scorecard.

Edit: repetitive words words

OhmsLawn,

You have to wait until the stalk turns brown. This should be obvious to anybody. I’ve literally never eaten a ripe corn dog with a green stem.

OhmsLawn,

Honestly, Safeway Select frozen pizza is pretty good. I’d take it over most of the midrange name brands.

OhmsLawn,

I’m in the process of slowly replacing my screwed-up teeth, and ten minutes means a lot when you’re in pain. I haven’t had the liquigels in a very long time, but I’d consider buying them for the faster response time.

OhmsLawn,

You’re right. The dual-action 12-hour Mucinex is far superior to the slow 12-hour generics, but it’s quite a bit more expensive.

OhmsLawn,

I actually prefer Royal Crown over Coke and Pepsi. It’s not a generic, but it’s not top-shelf either. It works out well with the sales at the Supermarket, too. Often they’ll do a 12-pack mix-and-match with RC, Canada Dry, Squirt, etc. all very tasty sodas.

OhmsLawn,

The problem I keep running into with cottage cheese is finding large curd. I went to the supermarket today and only managed to swipe one off of the restocking cart. There wasn’t a single container on the shelf. I’m just not a fan of the smooth texture of the small curd, might as well eat ricotta.

OhmsLawn,

Fage and only Fage.

OhmsLawn,

I actually prefer the heat of ginger beer, but since nobody makes an affordable version, I’ll often settle for ginger ale. Between Verners and CD, I generally prefer Canada Dry. Verners has always seemed a bit too syrupy for my taste.

OhmsLawn,

It’s basically a far more complex flavor, often with a little less sweetness. The biggest difference is that it’s made with real ginger, so it has noticeable heat that varies by brand. It’s also lightly fermented, not enough to make it alcoholic, but enough to deepen the flavor and allow for natural carbonation. Depending on the maker, it can be more or less filtered, so sometimes there’s a little sediment or a cloudy appearance.

OhmsLawn,

I didn’t get a day off the whole time, but sourdough. Starter’s still alive, but I don’t make it very often these days.

OhmsLawn,

20-some years ago I lived in a precarious situation in the back of an old Black Panther karate dojo (I know). Newly-minted urban white boy that I was, it was, culturally, quite a learning experience.

I remember one of the guys (an outdoorsman from Louisiana) told me that he was always armed when he went hiking or camping. I didn’t get it at the time, but now I do. It wasn’t bears or mountain lions he was afraid of. It was this shit.

OhmsLawn,

No. The resolution of this specific circumstance in this specific location is not what I mean by this shit.

By this shit I mean the general danger of being the wrong color in nature.

In Europe, there’s nearly zero chance of running into serious, life-threatening, interpersonal trouble on a hike, no matter your color. That is less certain in parts of the United States.

OhmsLawn,

I believe this is the same issue with the other comment, taking what I wrote as a specific solution to a specific problem.

This issue of getting the police called is emblematic of a problem that dark-skinned people have, where they’re considered to be inappropriate for natural areas.

What I was getting at is that there are specific rural areas, with unhinged residents and poor policing, where no outsider should go. If I choose to go, I should expect to provide my own personal protection. Those locations would be vastly multiplied if I had dark skin, to the point that it might become more expedient to just always carry.

I’m certainly not saying it would be appropriate for anyone to arm themselves while hiking in the Alps, or when dealing with police or benign racism.

OhmsLawn,

I’ve noticed there are a lot of German speakers on Lemmy, compared to other European languages. I’m curious, it a coincidence y’all ended up here, or was there early adoption in Germany for a more organized reason?

OhmsLawn,

Looking forward to at least half an hour on this from DR Becky. I’m very curious about the specifics of how they plan on detecting all this dark stuff.

OhmsLawn,

I’d take Steve over any of the …ayden (Jayden and the like) names, but I’d be hesitant to send it as a joke, as it might give them ideas.

Ken or Nigel are probably safe.

OhmsLawn,

See, I’ve never tried this. How does it work? I just replaced a bunch of 5yo Darn Toughs that had developed holes in the legs. Cost a bit, but they’re such nice socks. I suppose I should’ve tried returning them.

OhmsLawn,

The first movie I ever saw was Popeye, in 1980, with Robin Williams. I cried my little eyes out. It’s not a scary movie, but I was expecting a cartoon, and seeing it with live actors freaked me right the fuck out.

I’m sure it wouldn’t scare me now, but I haven’t watched it since.

Sort of a similar thing with The 'Burbs with Tom Hanks 9 years later. Probably wouldn’t scare me, but nah.

OhmsLawn,

If you’re looking for advice for a less-addictive video service, and you want to support creators, Nebula.

New Pipe is also a great little YT client, less addictive in that there’s no suggestion algorithm, so you need to know what you want to watch.

OhmsLawn,

Took me the longest time to understand what y’all meant by half-six. 5:30? 6:30? Now I’m unsure again. It is half past six, correct?
