Next smartphone I buy, which one do you recommend?

Things that make me angry about my current smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21Ultra on a Verizon plan is the mandatory software updates in which they install WITHOUT MY PERMISSION stupid apps like Netflix and addictive gambling games and stacking block games and Candy crush. God knows what else they install without my permission. I...

N4CHEM,

I’m interested in reading about those. Dou you have a link or a list of some of those issues?

N4CHEM,

I use a phone holder and my phone sits there with my maps app showing me the navigation.

N4CHEM,

With the Fairphone (…) the ROM options are CalyxOS and /e/OS

Don’t sleep on DivestOS and iodéOS. There’s more OS options for the FairPhone.

N4CHEM,

As @netchami said, Bromite hasn’t been updated in months, it shouldn’t be used. Cromite is a proper successor forked by one of the contributors of Bromite.

N4CHEM,

Gluten is a protein, nobody would call it a plastic

N4CHEM,

makes me want to increase the F-Droid alternatives that I use

Just go this way, and if you’re fed up with the Play Store switch to Aurora Store: same apps, no ads.

N4CHEM,

It had problems with the rate limited accounts for the last months, but I think they’re fixed now. I haven’t had any problem in the last weeks. If you keep getting these messages I’d recommend clearing app data and starting a new anonymous login session.

N4CHEM,

Year One. I can’t stand Jack Black nor Michael Cera after wasting 90 minutes of my life watching that trash.

N4CHEM,

The FairPhone comes with stock Android, but you can easily unlock the bootloader and install a different ROM. Some that I know are available for the FairPhone 4 are LineageOS, CalyxOS, iodéOS and /e/OS. With all of these you can achieve a certain level of degoogling and privacy.

Many people will recommend you GrapheneOS, which is unfortunately only available on Google Pixel devices.

N4CHEM,

You can also but a FairPhone with iodéOS already installed in it, not from the FairPhone store, though, but from the iodé one.

N4CHEM,

As far as I know, this OS is no longer available in the newer models FairPhone 4 and FairPhone 5. However there are other degoogled options for these models, off the top of my head: LineageOS, CalyxOS, iodéOS and /e/OS.

N4CHEM,

Simple games don’t need internet access. Can’t you block network connection for that app?

A better option even is getting something like what [email protected] suggested, or this other one f-droid.org/packages/org.moire.opensudoku/ or this other one f-droid.org/…/org.secuso.privacyfriendlysudoku/

N4CHEM,

Soundcore Q20 and Q30 have a physical button with no need for an app, I don’t know if their newer models are still like this. The Q30 also have a proprietary app to configure some things (like EQ), however a big plus here is the existence of an open source app on IzzyOnDroid’s repo that can also do this.

N4CHEM,

This doesn’t prove much. I don’t trust Facebook nor Meta, but it could be a problem with that file, the formatting, encoding… that fails on WhatsApp. We need more proof.

N4CHEM,

Basically the same thing I replied to this same post shared on [email protected]. This 2.5 years old video proves nothing, I don’t trust Facebook nor Meta, but this is a poor quality post.

N4CHEM,

I want a smaller smartphone but not an iPhone. It’s sad that Apple is the only manufacturer still producing reasonable sized phones. Small phone gang unite and push for other manufacturers to follow Apple on this one!

N4CHEM, (edited )

I don’t believe the small phone gang is small, we just have one option: a pretty expensive iPhone mini.

I want a small phone but not an iPhone, I have no option therefore manufactures assume I want a humongous phone. That’s flawed logic.

N4CHEM,

Hi, I don’t know of apps, but maybe the websites OpenRouteService and wheelmap.org can be helpful?

N4CHEM,

Which “govt”?

N4CHEM,

Well, the community is called “Europe” and the post title is a clickbaity “Govt is selling land”. There are many countries and governments in Europe and post titles should be informative.

N4CHEM,

Eh, he “considered” buying Twitter and was forced to fulfill his agreement. Maybe we get lucky and it happens again.

N4CHEM,

You’re both right: most people don’t know what any of this means, but also people who know often don’t care. In my group of friends there are 2 programmers, they perfectly understand this yet they still share links full of trackers in the group chat.

My strategy is to friendly scold them (a programmer should know better) and in the same message share the same link without tracking rubbish. This way my non-technical friends can also see how short the same link can become.

N4CHEM,

They mention they have an F-Droid repo on their website (that you linked): app.futo.org/fdroid/repo?fingerprint=39D47869D29C…

Maybe that’s what the comment above meant?

N4CHEM, (edited )

They have their own F-Droid repo listed on their website (voiceinput.futo.org):

app.futo.org/fdroid/repo?fingerprint=39D47869D29C…

N4CHEM,

Maybe they just added it between your comment and mine. After all these things have to be added and updated at some point… maybe we caught the magic moment!

N4CHEM,

That’s just saying “Batman Begins was released 18 years ago” with extra steps.

N4CHEM,

No, no, you’re right there. Cars are a problem too. But that’s a different topic, we’re talking guns now.

N4CHEM,

Who talked about banning cars? Don’t put words in my mouth and don’t be so rude.

Cars are a source of different problems: pollution, traffic congestion, lack of space in cities due to parking needs… and accidents too, yes. All of these issues can be solved with his public transport, and 95% car rides can be replaced by public transport (unless I’m transporting the furniture I just bought back to my house).

There’s no need to go live in a padded cell (although if you wish to, be my guest), just stop whining online and look for solutions instead.

I'm not worried about saving my location. Are you? (upload.wikimedia.org)

In the privacy community there are services, programs for private maps use. Some even suggest using the phone without a SIM card (which is quite possible, but you can get into trouble). But I don’t use them, as my geolocation is already tracked by an advanced camera system in my city, by my cell provider via triangulation....

N4CHEM,

Why did you feel that Organic Maps was not good enough for you?

Is your area not properly mapped on OpenStreetMap or was the app not good enough for you?

N4CHEM,

But the comment you’re replying to is talking about day-to-day life. Not for most of us, but unfortunately some minorities are being targeted in some places, and the trend seems to be getting worse, not better, in the whole world.

N4CHEM,

Area is pretty outdated in OSM

Well, we can all actively contribute to OSM to improve the maps. I personally enjoy doing it and knowing that the map data doesn’t belong to a private company like Google.

No bus/train schedule

I am used to check those on an external app from the service provider. I understand how that is an issue for you, but in my case I don’t miss it.

(no) car accident alerts on place

this could be useful, indeed, but it is hard to implement while keeping user’s privacy. It can also be unreliable if users don’t report them properly.

(no) places reviews from users.

I personally prefer it like this: it means less clutter on my maps, and unfortunately online reviews have become quite useless in the last years: businesses push to remove negative review and buy fake positive reviews. I no longer trust them.

N4CHEM,

Yes, Organic Maps is the open source fork that some original developers of Maps.Me made once the original app was purchased by a third party.

N4CHEM,

That’s a tricky question and I feel like the answer is very personal. Simplifying it too much:

Organic Maps: basic, simple, easy to set up and understand.

OsmAnd: heavy, complicated and with looots of information.

I personally find that Organic Maps works for 90% of my needs: it’s easy to use and navigate through. The remaining 10% I need more advanced functions not present in Organic Maps and OsmAnd comes to the rescue.

N4CHEM,

It is not. It used to be, but it got acquired by a third party company and became closed source and started tracking its users.

The good news is that the original developers of Maps.Me developed an Open Source fork of the original app: Organic Maps which is an excellent app that is actively developed by a team that listens to the users needs and is therefore constantly improving. I recommend everyone to check it out.

N4CHEM,

The fact that you can use bangs in DDG is so powerful that I don’t understand why not more people use it as their main search engine. The few times when it’s not good enough just add the !g after your search (it doesn’t even need to be before) and get redirected to Google.

N4CHEM, (edited )

Good news: you never needed Google Podcasts to begin with. Antenna Pod is a Free Open Source app that won’t track your every move and just works.

N4CHEM,

I am sorry to hear that. I don’t personally use Android Auto, so that’s a situation I’m not familiar with. I am also sorry to see people downvoting your comment just because you report a bad experience, that doesn’t help anyone.

I would recommend opening an issue about it on the project page in GitHub. Another advantage of FOSS apps is that developers are usually easer to reach for feedback and support, although I must say I don’t have experience with the AntennaPod developers.

N4CHEM, (edited )

Sorry, I don’t use Android Auto so I don’t know about this feature. You could check on their GitHub page and even open an issue if there is no support.

Proton services discussion

I’ll start off by saying everyone’s economic situations are just as varied as their threat models and how people make decisions on which services can be specific to themself and not one that can apply to anyone else. The services one chooses to use for free or to pay for may be based more on what they can afford vs what’s...

N4CHEM,

It is available through the IzzyOnDroid repository if you want to download and update the app using an F-Droid client.

N4CHEM,

There might be some website that offers that functionality using OSM data.

One thing that we need to understand is that OSM is data. Loads of it. The ways of displaying and searching for that data are up to each website and app that uses OSM data: first the data has to be added to OSM, then someone has to develop a tool to easily view it.

N4CHEM,

It was sold and got worse into he last years. The goof news is that some of the original developers of maps.me made a fork of that application… Organic Maps.

N4CHEM,

Not yet, but this feature is planned.

N4CHEM,

Interesting… I love the simple and clean type of Organic Maps, but it’s cool that there’s an app for everyone out there.

The Organic Maps team is working on an outdoor style, for hiking and similar situations. They had it in a beta version some time ago, but they decided to rework it, so it is not ready yet. You can check in a couple of months if you’re interested in seeing how it looks like.

N4CHEM,

And a second point here: how much of the remaining 33,59% belongs to Chromium-based browsers? Those still contribute to Google’s monopoly over the web, so the final numbers are even worse.

N4CHEM,

Thank you, it gets complicated as you dive deeper. Am I right when I think that Chromium, although Open Source, is mainly developed by Google and therefore follows Google’s agenda?
