gohixo9650,

Are there any predators smart enough to strategize like this?

it is the predators that build such passages. Have you ever seen any construction company building them? Even in the first photo that is under construction, there is not any human worker in sight

gohixo9650,

revisit the comment thread as someone has now posted a photo

gohixo9650,

once I had a flatmate that every time he was cooking he was leaving the kitchen like a warzone and he had used every utensil available in the kitchen. He somehow thought that it was faster for him to focus only on the cooking and after it is completed, to do all the dishes, pots, utensils, glasses, oven trays, scissors, screwdrivers, hammers, drills or whatever else he may had used.

gohixo9650,

This!

gohixo9650,

Less content, that is spread across multiple instances that can have duplicate communities.

on top of that, there redundant communities that are unnecessary even in the same instances. For example there is the android@ and the askandroid@. The first one has a decent amount of subscribers while the second one has a single digit number. I wanted to ask a question, I posted in the first one since it would make sense to reach more people. The post got deleted and I was told to go to the other one. In the first one they were posting only news articles.

This is ridiculous. Splitting communities in such way was the result of the huge traffic that such communities had in the past in other platforms. This makes sense only when the traffic is so huge that it is practically chaotic to navigate and moderate between news/articles and support questions. When both communities combined have 50 subscribers, such split only harms the platform and the users.

Everyone wanted to migrate by bringing an identical environment to what they had used to. However this should be adaptable to the current situation instead of directly copying it.

gohixo9650,

so what is needed is a system that doesn’t allow the concentration of power into one entity that is using this power for personal benefit.

gohixo9650,

short answer: not possible without real moderation by people who are getting paid for that.

gohixo9650,

Attractive people simply don’t need the apps.

and funnily enough, attractive people are being “promoted” by the apps. By “promoted” I mean, that people who receive a lot of right-swipes are pushed higher in the stack of appearing to users because if users were seeing not-attractive users, they would ditch the app.

gohixo9650,

app sponsored AI bots to lure people into paying premium

sorry but what do you mean? Can you please explain?

gohixo9650,

still not get it. You imply that these “premium messages” will be messages by AI bot accounts ?

gohixo9650,

and what does it prevent them to do the same thing now? In both cases, sooner or later the real users will figure out they are bot accounts. I don’t get how the company will benefit if they have a series of angry users when they realize that the messages were from bots all along? Or are they gonna keep the bar so high that the end users will never realize that they were bot accounts.

gohixo9650,

yes, and how long until this be known? If the company self-sabotage itself so profoundly it will just be the end of the company. I’m not saying that their end goal is to survive forever, but this is incredibly shortsighted.

gohixo9650,

lol or “pay to win”. Pay to have an AI reply for you that will guarantee to get the conversation going

gohixo9650,

the “I” in “AI” is not real intelligence either

gohixo9650,

sure. However “plus” means that something is additional to something else. And the question here is what is the basic product that makes this one be the additional

gohixo9650,

US americans are complaining for nasa, public schools if they don’t have kids, public health sector, even for bike lanes because they use no bikes, but almost never for all the military expenses on the other side of the earth.

gohixo9650,

ok, so the word “plus” is used to indicate that it is a streaming service. Got it

gohixo9650,

From their generic FAQ:

What is Disney+?

Disney+ is the streaming home for entertainment from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.

from my limited perspective, the word “plus” is to indicate the rest studios/companies that are included in the Disney (parent) company

gohixo9650,

but this means that she would see the ads but not being able to click? I don’t get it. They should had just disappeared, no? Or was she complaining that she wasn’t seeing the ads?

gohixo9650,

yeah you’re right actually. I always use it combined with a local browser adblock and didn’t think of that

gohixo9650,

gohixo9650,

The IT crowd

gohixo9650,

firefox for android + ublock origin and/or adguard-dns

gohixo9650,

sure if you prefer to support the google monopoly

gohixo9650,

or get an open source, free and privacy friendly one from f-droid in case you haven’t tied your hands with an iphone

gohixo9650,

Once I was using a girlfriend’s laptop and I told her very casually “I’m adding an adblock” when she replies me “no don’t block them, I like them because sometimes I find nice offers in the ads” and I froze. I wasn’t expecting that and I was so baffled like “what do you mean you like them, how do you live seeing more ads than what you originally came for” lol

gohixo9650,

in the 90s there was no technology to have an overlay of an ad following you while you scroll and when you close it a new one appears more aggressively. Or to let you start reading an article and then suddenly appear in your face not allowing you to continue. Yes, there was the worse situation that they would open a whole new window, but browsers started restricting it quite early

gohixo9650,

I’m also curious why people pretend it doesn’t exist when they say “there is no other video uploading platform like youtube”

gohixo9650,

a bit off topic but when you say personal instance where is it hosted? And if it is strictly personal, doesn’t google create the same profile for you which will be assigned in your IP if it is hosted in your house, or in your VPS’s IP if hosted elsewhere?

gohixo9650,

interesting. thanks for sharing!

gohixo9650,

ok, I think I had missed this crucial difference in the business model lol

gohixo9650,

I don’t think we should underestimate the savvy programmers out there

you can’t imagine how many programmers out there are living their life without adblocks. Even before this last month’s shitshow

gohixo9650,

and WireMin

sorry this is not open source. Who is behind it, what is their gain and how do I trust whatever they claim in their website?

gohixo9650,

as I see it, the problem in your statement is that while you mention you’re pro-FOSS, you got overexcited by the claims of an unknown entity over technologies that you like and at the same time you have no source. Just promises. They could even be a startup that has just put all the buzzwords there while in fact on their code they don’t do anything of that and they just use a centralized server with symetric encryption and have the symmetric key stored in the code. The app will look like it works till proven that it is not. As long as they don’t want to publish their code, you getting overexcited (at least for me), is pointless.

There was an example with a startup that was doing something similar to that, not in that magnitude with a stored key, but something equally bullshit until they were exposed. Quite early in their journey. Cannot remember the name right now but there was a good analysis by a researcher. If I remember it, I will add it.

gohixo9650,

ublock does it too if you enable the “block annoyances” option in the settings

gohixo9650,

yes. As I wrote

After I reboot I have tried checking all logs available and I cannot find anything logged right before the incident. Last entries are always different and not indicating anything.

gohixo9650,

isn’t this a unified way to present logs that also exist in var/log ? I mean if the logs are saved in var/log I’ve checked them. If there is a possibility that journalctl has more entries, then I need to check this too.

gohixo9650,

if you have set up your whole home like being bugged you’ll not gain much from a firewall in the most secure of devices among them.

gohixo9650,

my point was that at this point, you have more serious problems than first securing the device which by default is the most secure one among them. I mean it needs much more expertise and targeted attack for someone to break into your local network, and then manage to break into your linux machine, which by default is quite secure regardless, compared to the effort that is required to find unsecured IOT devices and get the data they happily share open in the wild.

If your home network is bugged with microphones and cameras without any proper security measures, adding a firewall in a linux laptop shouldn’t be your priority. In contrary it is “dangerous” as a non tech savvy person may think that they are more “secure” now, while in fact they have added zero protection to all the sensitive data that they give in the surveillance devices they willingly put in their home.

gohixo9650,

but a firewall takes no effort.

this whole thread is literally asking for people to put effort to collectivelly write a huge ass complete guide about linux firewalls targeting new users. So what I understand is that both the authors and the readers will have to put effort in either explaining or understanding and learning. We are not talking about a sudo apt install gufw and call it a day.

gohixo9650,

the combined internet toggle

you can go to the settings of the notification’s pull down menu (the one that you can add/remove tiles) (pencil icon), remove the combined internet button, and add 2 separate buttons for wifi and mobile data. It could be relevant to the ROM though so I’m not sure if it exists in all phones.

gohixo9650,

I find it more convenient to move this dock on the left side of the screen and shrink it down to a very thinner one. Then it only occupies a few pixels horizontally, which results in just a bit narrower windows.

gohixo9650,

there is an even worse case for that. CTRL + F in a browser and directly start typing while you’re in a webpage/webapp with hotkeys shortcuts. I end up marking posts/emails as spam, deleting them from my view, start replying or whatever action they’ve assigned in a single key press.

gohixo9650,

it does exist on lineage 20

gohixo9650,
gohixo9650,

technically you’re correct, but this depends on the country and/or plan. For example family plan in europe is increased by 3 EUR
