Because it’s the only browser not based on Google’s Chromium rendering engine (Webview, WebKit? whatever). Using any other browser supports Google’s monopoly over how we browse the internet and what we are allowed to see. No, fuck Google.

Edit: spelling

N4CHEM,

Yes! I failed to dive deeper, but you expressed it well. They have already planned to remove the option to have ad-blockers in Chrome… what will come next?

N4CHEM,

Thank you, I used to know the rendering engines fairly well a few years ago, but I’m out of the loop now.

What about WebView? It’s the rendering engine used in Android, closely related to Blink I assume.

In Spain, dozens of girls are reporting AI-generated nude photos of them being circulated at school: ‘My heart skipped a beat’ (english.elpais.com)

Police investigation remains open. The photo of one of the minors included a fly; that is the logo of Clothoff, the application that is presumably being used to create the images, which promotes its services with the slogan: “Undress anybody with our free service!”

N4CHEM,

The crux of course is that your average Instagram image looks not much different

And I believe that is the reason why these AI images look like this: they’ve been trained with these Instagram and Instagram-like social media images, therefore that’s what they can do.

Signal-FOSS is on the TwinHelix F-Droid repository fdroid.twinhelix.com/fdroid/repo/?fingerprint=7B0…

Signal is on the CalyxOS F-Droid repository github.com/CalyxOS/calyx-fdroid-repo

N4CHEM,

To be fair both are small repositories, yes, but I managed to find them both when looking for a way to install Signal via F-Droid. And no, I’m not running CalyxOS, but a different degoogled ROM :)

I might be wrong, but TwinHelix’s Signal-FOSS seems to still be active, the latest update I found on their F-Droid repository and their GitHub is from yesterday: github.com/tw-hx/Signal-Android/…/v6.32.5.0-FOSS

But anyway, I just wanted to share these 2 sources since I saw the Signal / F-Droid discussion happening. It could be useful to someone. I don’t know enough to judge what option is better.

Bizarre problem today: I was force subscribed to a Logan Paul podcast and I can't unsubscribe.

I noticed a new background image on the Android podcast app this morning. I thought one of my podcasts changed their icon art. Nope, it’s a Logan Paul podcast. I’ve never listened to any of his stuff. I only heard about him when he challenged someone to an MMA fight I think?...

N4CHEM,

It looks like it’s time to ditch whatever podcast app you’re using.

Look for a FOSS alternative, I’d recommend AntennaPod (antennapod.org), but there are other alternatives out there: not bloated, no ads, no tracking, just what you choose to subscribe to.

N4CHEM,

I would add iodéOS to that list

iode.tech/en/

Then let each user choose what they like

N4CHEM,

That’s not the only reason, you can also unlock the bootloader of a FairPhone very easily and they’re still not supported.

N4CHEM,

I love Organic Maps, it is clean, simple, and works for 95% of my needs. The rest of the times I resort to OsmAnd, which is heavier and more complicated but has many more options.

The house number search can be tricky with OpenStreetMap based apps, unfortunatey, but still better than using Google, in my opinion.

I used Magic Earth in the past, but it has some wrong information in my city (an important road is marked as closed and it calculates long detours) which is not coming from OpenStreetMap, so I personally don’t trust it.

N4CHEM,

Yes, it’s the fork of Bromite that uazo is maintaining.

github.com/uazo/cromite

N4CHEM,

Honest question: is using those 3 addons better than sticking to just uBlock Origin?

I have read multiple times that the best is to just uBlock Origin and nothing else, since other addons are redundant and together will make your fingerprint easier to recognize.

N4CHEM,

I saw a couple of Delvoye’s Cloacas in a museum years ago (he has built several models, the first using a washing machine as “stomach”, if I recall correctly).

I recall reading that the purpose of the work was to show how one can put a lot of effort into something (he really worked on making it as close as possible to physiological human digestion) but in the end the result can be shit.

N4CHEM,

Wait, you wouldn’t put “The Life Aquatic” inside the “weirder movies” category? But yes, I can understand what you mean, “The French Dispatch” and “Asteroid City” were cool, but not as engaging as “Moonrise Kingdom” or “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.

N4CHEM,

And that’s September 27. No need to replicate the article’s clickbait title.

N4CHEM,

Thanks

N4CHEM,

No, no, no. Private browsing isn’t private like that. Your ISP and network adminstrator (in this case your employer) can still see every website you access. This is usually explained on the “New private tab” on browsers.

N4CHEM,

As others have said: Mull (which is based on FireFox) + uBlock Origin is the way to go.

If for any reason you need a Chromium-based browser: Cromite.

N4CHEM,

Why is Southern Europe in the middle of Asia?

N4CHEM,

It’s time for Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music to shine.

N4CHEM,

You dropped this:

/s

N4CHEM,

Not really, there’s degoogled ROMs that run on different smartphones: CalyxOS, DivestOS, iodéOS, /e/… But it is generally recognised that the best one for privacy AND security is GrapheneOS, which indeed only runs on Pixel phones.

N4CHEM,

Good idea. Take your time to look into them and decide what suits you better. Each of them has a different range of compatible devices. I might have also missed some other ROMs, so it’s worth reading more (although I deliberately skipped LineageOS because it is not fully degoogled).

I am personally running iodéOS for more than a year now and I’m quite happy with it.

N4CHEM,

You can sell them for profit

N4CHEM,

So many options! Thanks Satanists!

N4CHEM,

It doesn’t have to be. This could be how YouTube dies.

Websites are nothing without users. We have the power to stop using websites that pull this shit and promote new websites that don’t.

N4CHEM,

The episode I am talking about

You didn’t talk about any episode. You made a post with an uninformative title and no content.

N4CHEM,

So the definition of what “Latino” is comes from… the US institutions?

N4CHEM,

Obviously the “loving hard” part is dumb, but I hope you see the irony on posting this tweet and then citing for the definition of “Latino” a website from a US institution

N4CHEM,

Not a song about cars or driving, but a perfect song to drive to on a gray autumn day:

The War On Drugs - Under The Pressure (Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, YouTube Music)

The whole Lost In The Dream album is a good driving soundtrack.

N4CHEM,

Thanks for informing us about the wrong title

N4CHEM,

The song to begin whatever playlist comes out of this thread: The Hives - Come on! (Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, YouTube Music)

N4CHEM,

I am sorry to read that. Most people in western countries say “I have nothing to hide” and shrug it away. They confuse having something illegal to hide with privacy: no company or government should be able to read my personal messages to my partner or my parents, period. That’s why postal mail is been protected for ages.

They then also fail to see that “I have nothing illegal to hide” will suddenly change when your country becomes an authoritarian regime that jails you for criticizing the government, and these things unfortunately still happen and will continue to happen.

Maker of Chrome extension with 300,000+ users tells of constant pressure to sell out (www.theregister.com)

“Actors who are asking me to add some tracking code are mostly interested in reselling users’ data,” Anashkin said. “Actors who want to purchase it outright will stuff it with malware depending on their level of greed: hijacking affiliate links, tampering with search results, showing popups with shady websites, etc.”...

N4CHEM,

And it’s very unlikely to happen, since our governments are very interested in spying us / buying our data.

N4CHEM,

Supergrass - Alright (Spotify / Tidal / YouTube video / YouTube Music). To me this is the sound of summer holidays beginning, forgetting any worries and start enjoying summer

N4CHEM,

Do you know if it is still under active development? It’s been one year since the last update

I finally downloaded F Droid and replaced all the proprietary apps which were a pain to deal with

Not sure how many people were suffering from it, but Google Photos became adamant about pushing ads. I couldn’t find a replacement in Google Store which wasn’t doing the same. Downloaded F Droid, used alternative to website to find apps, downloaded and now the problem is solved. You can use Google Files to install the F...

N4CHEM,

I use a custom OS (iodéOS) and can use biometrical security (fingerprint reader) and my banking app works fine. It has MicroG and passes SafetyNet.

With this being said, not all banking apps will work on custom ROMs / OSs, and SafetyNet might fail any day, as the developer has said, being honest, that it’s a game of cat and mouse.

N4CHEM,

Late to the party with a Spanish song:

Standstill - Poema n° 3 (Spotify, Tidal, YouTube Music)

N4CHEM,

For privacy I would always recommend FOSS apps. I personally like Transistor, it is lightweight, simple and private.

Seeking a legit caller ID and spam blocker solution

Hi all, through my experience, the third party apps that are supposed to do this a pure trash. I mean true caller was pretty decent, but it was packed with ads and trackers of course and the overbearing permissions that constantly tries hijacking my set SMS and dialer apps… I don’t think using a third party app is the right...

N4CHEM,

I use Yet Another Call Blocker too, and although the app hasn’t been updated in a while, the database is updated daily.

I am not sure about what security risks there could be with this app not being updated in 1.5 years, since it only connects to the internet to download database updates. I am happy to be educated about the security risks that using this “old” app could have.

N4CHEM,

It should work as default “Caller ID and spam app”. Check the FAQ in their website, as the behaviour can change depending on your phone manufacturer

N4CHEM,

Interesting, do you know if it’s in F-Droid? Or did you install the APK from GitHub?

When I follow your link and tap on the F-Droid link it takes me to the original OpenBoard instead of this fork. I guess they might just have kept the original Readme file with the F-Droid link to the original app…

N4CHEM,

OK, thanks for your reply. I’ll get the APK from GitHub and try it soon then. I hope there’s some way of removing words that the App’s dictionary has learned too. It drives me mad that OpenBoard has learned some of my spelling mistakes and now autocorrects to them.

N4CHEM,

I’d say ditch both Apple and Google and use an app based on OpenStreetMap data. The mapping data shouldn’t belong to any corporation that can decide to restrict access tomorrow. Use OpenStreetMap and if you find the mapping is not good enough contribute to improve it, just like one can do in Wikipedia.

To access OpenStreetMap data I’d recommend the apps Organic Maps (lightweight and simple) or OsmAnd (more feature packed but heavier). Magic Earth is also an alternative.

N4CHEM,

You’re welcome. Take into account that switching from Apple / Google Maps to one of those apps is quite a change and takes some time to get used to: they work offline (which is great for hiking or traveling abroad) so you need to download the maps you’ll use beforehand. Also the data might be incomplete… but you can help to improve it, which I find really cool. And it’s important to realise that the data doesn’t come from the same source as the app, so missing map data is not the app developer’s fault. Finally there’s no business reviews or ratings, which I don’t personally miss, but I understand some people will.

N4CHEM,

Magic Earth uses online maps and is closed source, so it could have code to track users and we wouldn’t know.

OsmAnd needs Internet to download maps, other than that it works offline.
